Title: New Rider/owner and leak after first ride. Ruh roh raggy! Plz help.
Post by: coasternuts on May 16, 2012, 10:36:18 AM
So I'm a new rider and got me a 2006 GS500F and I love her.  She looks nice and my first test rides were great.  So I finally gotten on the main roads over the last couple of days and brought it into work.  Decided to show off to my coworker and I see this.  Could someone please advise me on what this leak is and what it means?

I'm stuck at work until I figure this out.   :icon_eek:

Sorry, turn your head to the right for this image...ugh!

Looks like a missing cap of some kind?  Maybe?

I would have liked to have my first post of the full bike and my glorious first ride...but unfortunately I'm now nervous for my ride home.  :dunno_black:

Thanks for any help on this.

Thanks XLAR8.  I feel somewhat better now.  So I would expect to see this when ran under high pressure?  I don't see many bikes doing this, is this just a sign of some other problem, or this is just the accepted life of a GS owner?  Sorry if this seems very newbish, I'm new to the forum and the world of bikes and riding, and so far I think it's great and this site is great.  So much to learn, and a lot of accumulated wisdom here.  Thanks for the reply.

The open end tube is the drain from around the gas cap. Could be excess gas from filling up too much or water that gets there around the gas opening.

The capped off one (peenis type thing) is the airbox drain. It lets stuff come out without air getting in.

On many bikes those could be hidden more inside the frame. On some GS500's they end up getting tucked inside after the bike gets worked on and someone loses the metal clip or just happens to move them.

Thanks addidasguy.  Lol Luckily my gut instinct wasn't acted upon.  I was going to try to Jerry-rig something up to clamp off that tube for my ride home..

Actually, it might be the drain tube from the airbox.  That's where that's typcially routed.  It is normally capped off if it's from the airbox.  If it's from the gas tank then it's what adidasguy said and it shouldn't be capped off.  I wouldn't worry too much, but you should probably check your carb float heights with the clear tube from the drain method.  The gas in the airbox could be caused by your float needles allowing too much gas to flow into the carbs and overflow into the airbox.  Make sure you don't leave your petcock in the prime position as well.

EDIT: I just realized that I can see the capped off tube in the photo as well.  My airbox drain has a different kind of cap on it so I missed it.  Adidasguy is probably right, it's just the gas overflow drain tube. Trace them back to the source if you want to make sure.

Adidasguy has got it... I have this this exact set up on my '04 you may wish to lead them forward and behind the fairing a little more to 'hide' them.  I also worried when I saw it lol.  But it is as it should be. The 'leak' is more than likely gas or water as was mentioned.  Gas if the tank was a little too full, or water if some leaked around the tank lid (maybe you washed your bike recently?).

Good luck on your new wheels!

It was definitely not water or straight up gas.  It was black and oily.  Gas mixed with oil?  I don't know.  I did fill up the tank yesterday and I did notice I had it kind of full though.  I'll check my garage floor once I get home.  Thanks.

The hose with the cap is from the airbox. It is advisable to take the cap off now and then to let that hose drain - put a container under to catch the crud. It could very well be that your bike had the cap put on the wrong hose.

The tank drain is a smaller hose than airbox drain. The condom at the end of the airbox drain would be too bug for the gas tank drain.
The sexy looking thing at the end of the airbox has a slit in it to let stuff come out and air not back in. There is so much air resistance in a hose that small and long that very little are would get in. But air going in there would be dirty with road trash. That air goes into the air box AFTER the air filter so without the tip, you can suck dirt directly into your carbs.
