Title: New owner and rider in Valdosta, GA
Post by: nicksjohnson on May 28, 2012, 11:03:35 AM
Hey I just wanted to introduce myself. I'm nick johnson, I just bought an 08 gs500f for $2700 about a 2 months ago and have been on this site ever since. I've read all types of posts and have learned a lot so far, like how to do the fenderectonomy I just did 2 days ago.

I still need to do the reflectoronomy to make the side ones in the back more in line with the tail but I have a time. I love this bike so far, and I plan on having it for a while. I'm a SSgt aircraft electrical/environmental craftsman in the air force here at moody afb, and I love my job. I've worked on 3 different aircraft (F117A, KC135, A10) and multiple different cars and trucks so I'm looking forward to wrenching on the bike as well.

Within 2 weeks I started having fuel issues with the bike, so hopefully someone can help me. I've read all the issues and posts on the site with similar problems and found its kinda common. I can ride around for like an hour then all of a sudden it will start sputtering like its out of gas. I look in the tank and see that it has some gas in it (albeit low, like 3 inches from the bottom) switch the petcock to prime and it runs like a champ till I put more gas in it and get about the same level then it starts again. Is the 3 inches of fuel what suzuki calls empty, or is there something wrong that I should look into. I appreciate the help and the site is awesome. Welcome!

Are you sure you're switching to prime and not reserve? If so, what happens if you move the peacock to reserve when the engine starts sputtering?

Prime is only supposed to be used when the bike has been sitting for a long time allowing the carbs to dry up. The prime position  eliminates the need for the vacuum to open the diaphragm so fuel will flow, allowing fuel to flow directly to the carbs, unimpeded.

Prime and reserve both draw from the same tap on the tank petcock.

So, when you fill up, how many gallons does it take?

Welcome to the site. Mine did the same thing yours did tonight. I switched over to Res and it ran fine. Like you, I looked and it looked like it had a lot more gas in it but I dumped 2 gallons I had here at the house in it and it didnt quite fill it up so it seems normal to me.
