This must be an American thing?
Why a converter? Whats this for?
Those TVs still sell here (well give away) cause the kids use them so they dont break the plasma/LCD TV.
Dont need a "converter" and no idea what one is for?

The converter is because the US Govt in its infinite wisdom forced all broadcast tv networks (with few low power exceptions) to broadcast only in digital. This effectively makes any older tv without a digital tuner unable to view any broadcast over the air tv.

To be fair, this freed up more of the radio wave spectrum to be used for cell phones and wifi.

yup. i have several crt tv's running an OTA antenna. if i can get my hands on an lcd tv, these broadcasts are in HD as well. iget 16 channels. i watch 4 of them. one for news, one for historical stuff. one for cooking/travel, and finally one for csi type tv shows
