i was going to change my front sprocket to 15t but the shifter will not come off. i removed the one tightening bolt. it then slides a quarter inch and then stops. i yanked on it pretty hard but wont slide off. is there anything i am not doing right?

should not be that difficult. Did you remove the bolt completely? If so you should be able to fit a flat screw driver into the opening between the top and bottom. Gently pry that open and she should slip right off. Take you time, the metal is soft and can break with too much pressure.
