Title: idle question, 89, Jardine exhuast, jet kit
Post by: knowles on June 04, 2012, 09:01:56 PM
When i have the choke on and the bike on the side stand it will idle and then start to pick up speed as it gets warmer, but when i get on the bike and stand it up and take it off the kick stand the idle goes down. the idle doesnt change when i turn the bars its just when i tip the bike up. also when the bike is warmed up it doesnt do it? it this normal, or does anyone know what could cause this? I did replace the shims only one was in spec. going to recheck when i do the oil change on next tuesday

Float height OK?  Is your throttle cable binding on something when you move/lean the bike the speed changes?

im thinking its that carbs because it doesnt change if you just turn the bars, and being that it only does it when its cold.

Do you have it on prime when starting it like this?
I noticed what might also be the same thing... except my bike is almost completely stock and no mechanical mods/low miles.  I would start it up on prime, choke on, side stand.  Let it warm up with idle going up while I put my gear on (takes a couple mins).  Then I would get on the bike and take it off side stand and stand it up, and idle would drop a good 1k or better before I lowered the choke.  So I hopped off and put it back on sidestand and idle went back up.  After looking a little closer I realized that prime was still on.  I put the valve back on main, waited a second, and tried it again.  Didn't happen this time.  I took the lowered idle as it was getting a little bogged down filling with a bit more gas than it was just on the side stand (could be completely wrong on this though lol).  This has happened to me at least twice that I can remember, but both times went away without prime on.  But maybe it just went away after switching off prime cause it was warmed up anyway, like you experience?

check the diaphram in the fuel chicken and the tank petcock.  I replaced my lines with
tygon lines and could see when fuel was flowing.  I had some blockage in the
tank petcock and a weak diaphram and when the bike was leaned over the fuel
level was low enough to make it into the non-reserve line.  standing up, it was
too shallow a level and would only work on reserve -- which was partially clogged.
since I had a bad diaphram, the only way I could get fuel into the carbs was when
the fuel chicken was on PRI - leaned over.

After replacing all of this stuff, haven't had the problem since..

Put more gas in the tank and see if the problem goes away -- that's the easiest
way to check if you're having a similar problem.

tank is full, tank petcock is new OEM. i have clear lines so i can see it getting fuel, like i said it goes away after bike is warm, just going to take carbs apart, its seems to be running a little bit lean also, so going to add a washer to the needles.
