Title: Oil Leak from right side of case
Post by: crobwolfpack on June 05, 2012, 03:38:59 PM
So I've got an oil leak (as well as some carb issues... see http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=60783.0 ) on the right side of my case cover.  It is the side with the dip-stick and it is leaking from the top side closest to the rear, how do I know if I need to replace the whole outside cover or just the gasket?  The bike is a 93 so I'm hoping just the gasket since it's probably got some dry rot

Thanks in advance!

If there is no physical damage to the case cover it should definatly be the gasket. Be sure to pin point the leak though as they can be sneaky. I thought I had a leak from my cylender head that was from the cam tensioner. Snap a pic for the forum if you can and you may get some others to confirm your situation. Cleaning the surface and spreading a little baby powder can also help to find a leak.

If it started happening without any drops it's 99% the gasket. I did both sides on my bike recently - they started leaking about 6 months apart. I didn't get all of the old material off - scraped as much as I could and went over the rest with a wire brush. No leaks and it's been about a year!
