Title: A question.....
Post by: krushchev on December 15, 2003, 11:40:41 PM
since my engine is pretty much gone, I've been looking for a new one.

I'm curious about something though, what other engines could possibly fit in the GS frame? it's not like I'd actually do anything like that.... I'm pretty sure I'll put in the right motor once I find it.

still, it'd be pretty nice to put in an engine with a bit more power in it. but I'm pretty sure that it's a huge hassle. :thumb:

EX engine is probably the easiest conversion as they are about the same size/weight. But it will require relocating all the engine mounts and figuring a mounting for the radiator & electricals.

Erik Mathy was considering doing a Yami TZ350/Banshee 2stroke conversion. That is probabaly the biggest bang for the buck mod you can do, but is a whole box of cans of worms... I think he gave up on that idea to do an SRX thumper version instead.

Brian Long did the EX in GS frame out west. KC Gager says it worked very well but wasn't easy.

The SRX motor in GS frame has been done before. Can't remember who, tho'.

Erik bailed on the SRX project. The motor he bought was in poor condition. Tim Barker told me it looked like it had soaked in saltwater! :o

Erik's going with a Cannondale motor, IIRC.

I put a it 490 motor in one. I have pics some where I saw them about a month ago I'll try to find them and post them.   I had motor mount  problems. that was back in 94 or so.   I wasn't able to tune it. but I did get a 13.5 in the 1/4 while trying to tune it. at the end of that run I broke 2 motor mount again. and decided it wasn't worth it after a long straight and a 80-100mph turn 1. I'm going with a ktm this time.  The bigist problem is :the chain is on the right side. errr!

also  a dr650 motor IS probably the easist motor to swap in.  the gear side rear motor mount will work perfectly. so the chain SHOULD fit perfect to the motor.  you would just have to make a brake side motor mount.  the the front one should be a snap.

I did the DR650 into an old yamaha FZ600 chassis
I will probably redo it into a FZR400 chassis
since I have a purdy set of PM (bling bling) wheels for a FZR400/600

SAW a beautiful TITAN500 2 SMOKE in a GS frame on a friends Titan web page.

the chain drive is no big deal...flip the wheel and make a different caliper mount and get a LONG rear brake hose.....and buy my DUKE II engine

yep that was/is the plan in the rear wheel.
you selling a duke II motor????
I would need everyhting to make it run. carb,wiring.... prety much a kit.
email me with a price. I found a 99 KTM but was in tx but was sold 2 days before I emailed him. there is 96 here in town but it's been sitting a long time and I don't want to buy a complete  bike - for what he's asking- that I can't hear run.  plus I don't want to have to push start the bike if is im in a endurance race. I'll already be tired.

email me with what you have and $.
I'm in houston.
thanks

oh! thats a electric start right?

One last thing, how do you compare the KTM motor to the dr650? : power, tackablity ,mine will be on the street too, overall opinion about which us a better motor to go with.
