Title: WANTED: Cam Chain Tensioner
Post by: crrutchy on June 12, 2012, 08:46:16 AM
Hello all,

My cam chain tensioner has gone out (pretty common at my mileage of 20k) on my '02 GS500. Anyone have one they would be willing to sell to me? With gasket would be nice :)

Also, does anyone know if a CCT off a newer model will work with mine? I looked up part numbers from a 2002 here:

http://www.mrcycles.com/fiche_section_detail.asp?section=92666&category=Motorcycles&make=SUZUKI&year=2001&fveh=2102

and a 2009 here:

http://www.mrcycles.com/fiche_section_detail.asp?section=1044539&category=Motorcycles&make=SUZUKI&year=2009&fveh=28479

and it looks to be the same part number (12830-01D12)

Thanks!
:)

Having recently swapped out a CCT due to it sticking, I can confirm all years are the same (engine internals were basically unchanged except for the addition of the oil cooler and new ignition pickups/ignition rotor). Make sure to take a flathead screwdriver and pull out the plug, and tension it all the way while you screw it into the jug, or else the mounting tabs will crack and it will leak oil. Sent you a PM.

Thanks for the tip!

Yeah I saw that link you sent me as well... was thinking about maybe holding out for a newer part, because that one may have just as many miles on it as mine and go out pretty soon.

These are always funny to hear.
In my bowling business, people call with the most bizarre, unfair, stupid league rule and wonder why we don't support it. "But everyone does it that way" - yes, everyone at your center on a Tuesday 6:30 league. No one else in the world does it.

Here I never knew cam chain tensioners always go out at 20k miles. WOW! Where have I been all these years? I better stock up now because my bikes have more than 20k miles. (http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb442/adidasguy/Videos/nilly.gif) I must be in a utopia where they never go out.

"pretty common at my mileage of 20k " statements like this make me chuckle (http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb442/adidasguy/Videos/crackup.gif)

glad i could provide you with some well-deserved entertainment! it must be hard to come home after a long day of spraying lysol into sweaty shoes in the bowling business. but hey, chicks dig bowling shirts, right? the whole charlie sheen look? WINNING!

Sorry to disappoint you. I do not work in a bowling alley  :icon_rolleyes:
I write the software that bowling alleys use.

Just I haven't heard much about cam chain tensioners going out. When you mention they go out every 20k miles - I had a chuckle.

Newer ones are supposed to be a little better design than the older ones. So I've heard, but I'm not sure what the difference is.

Spoken with three techs about the issue, one of them was on the phone with a Suzuki technical support representative. All confirmed 20k is not out of the ordinary for a CCT to go bad on a gs500.
