Title: Handlebar Switch Compatability

Are the handlebar switches on a GS500F compatible with the wiring harness of an early model GS500E?

I have a distinct feeling, since I couldn't find anything in the search, that they are not. 

The switches on my Franken500 (built from ebay parts and parts bikes) have some rash on them, and I wouldn't mind replacing them with a pair of the newer ones.

err they should be ....

for an example .. my 2006 GS500f .... and my friends 1998 GSXR600 use the same switches/cable/plug on both sides (yeah i tested them)

i found this out when searching for a electrical fault ..

and i will not claim that all switches from all years of suzuki bike will all fit... but if the switch end  function looks the same as what you have (excluding minor cosmetic changes)... then odds are the plug end will also be same ...  :thumb:

I believe 1989-2000 are the same.
2001-2002 are different.
2004-2005 are different on the right side because in 2006 they wired the headlight through the starter switch to kill the headlight when the starter is pressed.

Best thing is check the connector. If same connector, you're OK.

What year of wiring harness did you use?

Unfortunately I didn't build it.  I bought it from a guy who built it from parts. 

Is there anything that might distinguish b/w a GSF and a GSE wiring harness?  I'm not particularly wiring savvy just yet.

2004+ have all the connectors under the tank. Earlier models have everything crammed into the headlight bucket like a 600 pound woman in size 4 spandex.

Best is to post a picture of the connectors - then someone can identify it. The controls are different between 89-00 and 2001+. So if the older controls, they are all compatible. Newer ones are more rounded in shape. Older ones are more geometric or have straight edges, so to speak.

This shows the 2001+ controls. Remember right hand is different 2001-2, 2004-5 and 2006+ for the connectors.
