Post by: iclrag on June 21, 2012, 08:16:01 PM
I've decided to use this thread to track my GS500, Pics and info coming soon  (less than an hour hopefully!)

okay here's the Bike now, (dead batteries now... yay me! ill use my cell phone and get some more when IT doesnt have dead batteries too)

And here is my to-do / Done checklist
Updated 22/9/12

(ordered) To-do
??/??/?? New clutch lever (i believe this one is bent)
??/??/?? LED brake light / turn signal bar (maybe seperate we'll see)
??/??/?? Turn signal integrated mirrors (still debating, not much of an effect to the front end)
??/??/?? K&N Oil filter  -  Is there really a benefit here? not really sure
??/??/?? re-paint it (not for a while, but i'm still planning)

Fabricate a new rear wheel-well
I'm really debating on removing my rear plastic fairings after i'm done, again, still debate-able

Done
10/7/12 Chrome screw covers on handle bars
10/7/12 Steel chain gaurd [Post #7]
10/7/12 New (working!) horn [Post #7]

18/7/12 Stator cover replaced - pics soon
18/7/12 Wired in direct connectors for the tender to the battery (i'l add pics of this as well if anyone wants!)

22/9/12 K&N Air Filter (un dampened_

Thank you to:
Adidas - Thank you for the chain guard and the horns! i wish i had a bike cave of my own!!!

dynojet is a good jet kit. factory is also good. i used a dynojet stage one jet kit on mine just for the different needles and because they didnt make a stage 3 for our years. I did have to use bigger mains than it came with though. Hopefully a shop around you will have a tech with jetdrills. If its a replacement filter than a stage one should be good. I have jardine full system and a K&N lunchbox filter and am using 144 mains and when dynoed it was a little rich up top. Im not sure how close the flow is from my pipe to yours though so good luck! Oh and its not a cam cover. I believe its the stator cover.

Those are just chromed plastic hole plugs for socket head cap screws. You can get replacement plastic ones from a dealer or any place that sells OEM parts, or you could get chromed steel ones from Bolt Depot or similar supplier. Mine all broke when I swapped bars, and I never bothered to plug them again. The rust bothered me though, so I replaced the screws with stainless ones.

awesome, thanks guys!

the rust bothers me to, thats the main reason i'm changing them.

i'm not sure how close they are either, and unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a good tech around me, i might have to go all the way up to seattle to get it done. (im up there regularly so it's not a big deal, assuming i can drive the bike that far without the jets that is)

yea you should be ok with driving it without jets. Thats what most Harley guys do after they put their obnoxious pipes on it lol. You should be able to mess with the mixture screw and thatll help some but probably not get it perfect. Good luck!

I decided to get some jets from budda, but that was one of the things that threw me off when i saw re-jetting mentioned alot, my dad is one of those harley guys and i helped him adjust the mixture screw, threw me off for a sec, but now i think  re-jetting (When done properly) is better.  :thumb:

Here's the new chain gaurd:

And the new Horn, nice and almost hidden, from the front the oil cooler and frame almost block it completely.

Looking good!
Glad the replacement horn worked out.

Now to remove the fugley sticker on the swing arm..... If you want it as a reminder of tire pressure, glue it under the seat  :icon_lol:

Yosh pipe finally installed!

Front of the bike (in process)
pipe
(http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x466/Brandon_Hantke/GS500F/2012-07-26204736.jpg)
Hack-saw ingenuity
(http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x466/Brandon_Hantke/GS500F/2012-07-26191143.jpg)

So i ended up dis-assembling the hacksaw and re-assembling it over the pipe with the blade inside-out so i could saw from the top down, worked suprisingly well compared to what i expected!

When (if) i get this running again i'll record a sound clip for ya

Okay, it's now running so i'll have to get a sound clip when i get home from work

I know i kinda dropped the ball here, i forgot to post, but i couldnt get a good recording of the bike running before. Mabe when im back i can do a quick run down of the bike sounds n everything, but i doubt itll work since my camera / phone /laptop all couldnt record it clearly (note to self, invest in the good stuff!)

might be a silly self explanatory question but im a noob so im gonna ask, did you wire a direct connection for the tender simply for charging reasons so you dont kill the battery in storage? or is it an every day use kinda thing?

Pretty much for the sake of simplicity, i was going away for a few months and i knew it so i didn't want anybody in my family trying to figure out how to move the bike if they needed to and dis-connecting / connecting the charge so now its as easy as charging a cell phone. it's really useful since i dont have to take the seat off to charge it as well.

On another note

I've now installed the proper jets in my bike! it runs great although it acts like there is a small bit of choke when the choke is all the way off. it might be because it hasnt been run in about 2 months, we'll see if it is better once it's   been warmed up and run a few more times.

Well finally back to my bike (feels like ages have passed). It starts, but barely goes passed idle, won't warm up (I can slowly work it to half choke) and she has a dead battery. So today I added some seafoam (read: I added an entire bottle) and 3/4's of a tank of premium and got her to rev up just a little before my tach crapped out on me. So now the tanks off and I'm preparing to pull the carb for a thorough cleaning because my dumb "insert explicitive of choice" didn't winterized it before disappearing for a while.

then what happened??

Then it started shooting flames out the exhaust pipe and leaking gas through the headers, then school started back up so I drained  the fuel completely and my buddy who owns a power sports shop is going to see if he can figure out the issue, I'll probably rebuild the BSR4's myself then have him use his synch tool to make sure everything is in proper working order, my current guess would be that one of the floats is off, or that one of the floats is getting stuck now. on the bright side though, I'm within 3 weeks of graduation and its coming up on riding season again, and I fully intend on having this bike on the road this season and finishing this build this year
