Opinions? Right now I have a 96 GS500e, and I'd really like something a bit sportier. I've always been fond of the F4is, and I found an 02 that someone is willing to trade for my 93 Ford Bronco (full size). It looks good in pics, although it has some rash from where it was laid down at low speeds (no real damage, and has been that way for several years). The only concern I have is that it has 52k miles on it. I mean, I know it's a Honda, so it should be good. Any opinions? Does this seem a fair trade? Or should I hold out and find something better? Thanks!

Also, by trading the Bronco, I would still have the GS, thus allowing me to put it up for sale. :thumb:
That's a lot of miles UNLESS it was taken care of. Unless you can prove that it was, it's a crap shoot with high miles.
Hold out for something better.

Yeah, that's my big concern. My GS is high mileage (have no idea HOW high, because the gauges were changed), but even since I got the carbs sorted out, everything has been great.
Getting more details tonight, just thought I'd check with everyone here first. FWIW, my Bronco is high mileage too, so it's hard finding someone willing to trade, and the market for gas guzzlers (351 with a 33 gallon tank!) is down right now.
Honest;y, i think your bronco is worth alot more than that bike, i would wait for a better opportunity!
on a side note, thats a nice bronco! good luck selling!

Not the best pictures, but you get the general idea. All of the specs were posted on the craigslist link, but I'll copy them here for anyone interested. And no, the Bronco is nothing but a toy. I've got an 06 Mustang that is my DD, and the GS. I'd really like to trade it for a bike, or even a jeep, but no real bites yet. I've had it up for a couple of weeks. Once the weather cooperates, I'll clean her up and get some better pictures.
1993 Ford Bronco
193,000 miles
80,000 miles on new motor
5.8 liter EFI V8
Automatic transmission
Push button 4x4 with Auto Hubs
The good:
Runs like a champ, shifts smooth, very reliable, rust free body, seats are in okay shape, rear window works great. Great A/C and heat.
The bad:
Needs paint work on the hood (tree sap has eaten the paint away), front windows need to be put on track/have motors worked on (they work, but the driver's comes off track at the bottom and the passenger requires some help pushing it up. The dash bezel is broken in numerous places, but can be replaced for <$75. Needs minor interior work. The carpet is dirty, but I planned on rhino lining it anyway (or I can pull the carpet out and pressure wash it).

apologies, i didnt pay attention my friend. if it were me, id keep the ford. with 80k on engine, shes still a baby. if you were determined to get the bike, id ask for boot. even with teh oj wagons shortcomings. on the least, id ask that they pay for registration costs. id check the condition of the cam chain, and its tensioner, , valve shims etc. its at teh age where these items will start to give way. these bikes RARELY are ridden like a scooter lol. they are ridden hard and put up wet.

No worries! I never mind sharing. I'm definitely going to look the bike up and down before I even consider anything. The guy that owns it is a decent chap, and owns a performance/tuning shop. He's got tons of pictures from when he rode the bike on trips (Deals Gap, etc.), and most of the time he was riding with older riders on tourers. I'll post up some more pics of the bike tomorrow. I've always had a soft spot for the F4is, and the Bronco just sits the majority of the time (full time student). I really only end up riding it if I want to go riding in the woods (we have 70 acres of family land, mostly dense woods, on the Ochlocknee River). Guess I'm just really wanting something to happen soon! Lol. If it were half the mileage, it would be a lot easier decision. At the same time, it's a Honda, and there's even a video on youtube of a man crossing 200k on his!
I'd do it. Especially if I didn't need the Bronco. That's just me though.
On another note, I, uhhh, errrr, 'borrowed' one of those Broncos as a kid and jumped some railroad tracks evading the Poh-lice, at about 90mph and somehow didn't wreck. I'll never forget the -no- sound from the tires when I left the ground. It bounced all over the place when it landed but didn't wreck or roll over. Thank God.
Yea yea, 'pics or it didn't happen,' you're right, didn't happen! Wasn't me. Had nothing to do with that!

Hahaha, yeah, I've had some good times in the Bronco as well.
I'm seriously considering the trade. The bike isn't perfect cosmetically, but if it runs well (it's supposed to) and I can't find any real mechanical faults with it, I'm going to do it. If for no other reason, the Bronco has started to act up (I think she knows I want to trade her). The 4x4 switch (electric) doesn't want to engage (or disengage) and I think it's the computer ($300), it's leaking like crazy, and to top it off, the battery discharged itself for seemingly no reason. Oh, and it's going to need tires soon. (The bike comes with an extra set, woo!). I may see if he can throw anything else in to sweeten the deal, but I feel like it's a fairly even trade, since the Bronco needs some work.
Here's some more pics of the bike:

Lol. I'm gonna try and meet up with him before the weekend.
You've got an F2, right? What are your thoughts on the F4i? Ridden one? Never heard anything bad..
Are you thinking about this project bike cause the guy is willing to trade or cause you want a more powerful bike? Before you decide anything, take the thing for a spin - you might not like it. THEN you can decide.

A little of both. I don't really need the Bronco, and my GS is great for city riding, but I just can't get comfortable on it riding on the highway. I really don't care too much about the cosmetics (I can clean it up and paint it), even though they're not terrible. I'd probably just live with it the way it is. I just want something that is reasonably comfortable, gets decent mileage, has fairings, is fuel injected (our temperature fluctuations suck on carbs), and a little sportier.
I'm definitely going to ride it before I commit. I would hate to ride it, and not enjoy it.
Don't touch that bike. It's dirty as hell and doesn't even look that good in the pictures. I've always found that bikes look a hell of a lot better in pictures than they do in person. What's that say about this hunk of junk? Plus...alllllll those miles with who knows how many owners.
Honestly man that truck is probably worth more than that piece of shaZam! bike.
Sell the truck. Get 3k for it. Buy an SV in the fall/winter. Done.
Hell, I might be interested in trading with you when it comes time. I'm about to have a second job and having a bike as my only means of transportation might not be an option.
I like the F2, but I'd go fi any day. I haven't had the op to ride the f4i but I'm certain it is better than my F2 (or the F3 I had), which is still a blast to ride.
Good words from Mister as in riding it and then deciding. Good observations from Kijona too.
Truly it would hinge on how well it runs. I think Hondas have an outstanding record even with that many miles on it. My point of view comes from, having an older truck that I don't really need vs picking up a bike that I could really enjoy. It'll be a good read to get your review after/if you go check it out.
Yeah, the biggest thing for me is how well it runs. I've got some pics of it cleaned up and it looks a lot better, those were just the ones from this morning (we've been getting flooded), so the Bronco looks like crap too.
If anyone wants the Bronco, hit me up! Lol. I'm definitely going to go check it out and ride it, just because. At the least I'll be able to give my feelings on it.
F4i's run forever. The bronco, maybe not.
I wouldn't hesitate to trade a guzzler for a f4i, unless it was my family hauler.
The tank bag (vs stickers and blacked out signals) that it might have been ridden sanely and cared for.
Regarding the pricing...
For a trade either...
A - you believe the bike is worth as much as your vehicle
B - you believe your vehicle is only worth the price of the bike, less actually cause all prices are negotiable.

I believe the Bronco is worth between 2.5 and 3k. It is rough around the edges, and filthy. I'm going to clean it up tomorrow and see how it looks under all the grime. I don't know if I mentioned, but it's going to have to be repainted. The hood has hardly any paint, and the front fenders are a bit of a different shade from the rest of the truck. With the market the way it is, I don't see me getting the 3k it's probably worth..
As far as maintenance, it got new plugs 2k ago, new chain and sprockets 1500k ago, and new rear pads 2k ago. Going to need front pads fairly soon, but I'm gonna see if he'll go ahead and change them (not like that's not an easy fix). Comes with an extra set of tires as well.
FWIW, these are pics of it from last year at Deals Gap:

Here are a few more observations I've made:
The only picture in the ad that shows the bike is a lot older than the pictures you posted. Red flag right there. I've found that what happens is people post pictures of the bike they took right after getting it. Because it looked a hell of a lot better then than it does now.
Ad says he wants to trade for something more aggressive. Yet he's willing to trade for a Bronco? Ummmm...kay? Maybe he's trying to dump some junk on you.
"Tires are okay. Have another set that will go with the bike."? Okay, then put those on there. Tires not mounted to the bike are worth little to nothing and only degrade the price because then you have to turn around and mount them yourself.
"Previous owner dropped it at a slow speed." No. That was more than a 'slow speed' fall. My 97 GS had been dropped at a "slow speed" and it wasn't nearly that bad. That bike had to have slid some distance for it to grind the plastic down that much. In fact, I bet they probably dropped it themselves and are lying.
Bikes that are 'cared for' are clean. People don't let bikes they 'care about' get all dirty and nasty like that. Also, look around the tail lights. There's bits of rubber it looks like - from what? Well probably the tire when somebody did a burnout on it.
Look at the first picture you posted of the bike. The tank decal is cracked and fading.
Looks like the keylock for the rear seat is missing from that third picture. Can't say for sure but it definitely appears that way.
Look at the second picture you posted. There's bolts missing from the fairing and in FACT, there's a couple of zipties holding the thing together. That isn't a bike that's been 'cared for'. Sorry.
On top of it, it has over 50,000 miles on it? PLEASE!
All of these things from a handful of small pics. How do you think it's going to look when you get there?
Just think of it this way...which do you need more? A running, fully functional (apart from windows) truck or a bike that's probably about to breathe its dying breath that looks like shaZam! on top of it?
Ahhh...okay here's another hole in the guy's story. Those pictures are supposedly from last year? He claims he's had the bike for 2½ years, right? Well, if those are from last year, where is all that rash that the previous owner supposedly put on it? HMMMMM! So either he's lying about how long he's had it, he's lying about dropping it, or he wasn't the one riding it when those pics were taken. Regardless, dude's lying about something.
Also, you'll notice the fairings are NOT held together with zip ties in those pictures you just posted, but are in the more recent ones? Something is fishy.
Yeah, the more I look at it, the worse it looks. I'm still going to go check it out in person, because, hey, why not? At least I'll get to ride it and see what it's like.
I'll more than likely hold out, and see if I can find a buyer. I'm trying to give him the benefit of the doubt about it being dirty, since the weather has been crap here for the past month.
FWIW, the Bronco looks nicer in pics than it does in person too..
And I thought that as well, about the Deals Gap pics, but if you look closely on the second one you can see the damage, though I don't think I see zip ties in it.. Hmmm.

If this tank didn't get such crap mileage, I'd ride it up there and let you check it out! But God, it would take at least $100 just to get there! First gens are better...FYI.
I've got a 1990 F-150 with the 5.8L/351 Windsor in it. It gets horrible mileage and it's only 2WD. I can't imagine that thing with 4WD. LOL
I'll probably just end up selling the SV when I need to and buying a decent small car. I really don't enjoy driving large vehicles.
What it is is...I don't want the bike, and I don't want YOU to have that piece of shaZam!. LOL! You're all oogly eyed over it so you overlook stuff. Hahaha! :flipoff:
Yeah but second gens look better. :flipoff:
if i had hte cash to spare id grab that bronco. but alas i do not. tbh i know you like/want that bike. but please find somethign better or get some boot for trade.
It's not really even that I'm sold on this bike..
I'm just in a position financially while I finish school where I need to lessen bills as much as possible (insurance on bronco AND a bike, vs. just bike), and I don't have the time/money to drive the Bronco anyway. I've owned if for five years, and I've probably driven it 30 times in the last 3. Literally the only time I use it is to: take my dog for a ride, go ride in the woods, or drive it just because. It's 20 years old, and though mechanically sound, very rough around the edges. It's far from polished. To be honest, I'm not sure that anyone would ever give me $3k for it. I've dropped the price to $2750obo for the holiday, to see if I can get some bites, and alas, still nothing. And this is in SOUTH GA, where everyone loves big trucks! It's definitely a buyer's market.. So frustrating.
I guess that's why I'm going to look at this bike, it kind of reminds me of the Bronco in spirit.. rough around the edges, but runs well in spite of it. Not saying I'm making the trade (and definitely not without some other compensation), but it can't hurt to look.
I definitely appreciate everyone's thoughts, keep them coming!

As much as I hate to say it, being a chevy guy, I'd hold out. F4i's are awesome but with that many miles in that cond. you're Bronco might actually be worth more. I think you could find a better deal. Now I have stab myself for saying a Bronco is worth anything but scrap. :2guns:

Ha! Bronco's are like jeeps, the hold their value really well. But then, old K5s do too. Maybe it's just a 2 door SUV thing?
I'd still go trade for it. But that's just me and I know I'd fix whatever went wrong with it. I'd rework the fairings and paint it. I'd clean it up. If something went wrong with the engine, I'd fix it. That's just me though.

That's my thinking as well, but only if it's in great mechanical shape. I've priced new (painted) fairings, and I can get some for around $400. So if he throws some cash in with the deal, cosmetics won't be an issue. Plus, I won't be afraid of dropping it, since I'll be stepping up from the GS to something with a lot more power. He's cleaning it up today, and I'm going to check it out tomorrow. Supposedly the fairings only need new bolts, hence the zip ties. We'll see tomorrow. If it's not in great mechanical condition, it's a no go.
On a happier (not really) note, the Bronco's hood has been peeling from where it stayed parked under a tree and sap ate through the paint.. Well, these flood waters made it even worse, and I went out this morning to find sheets, yes SHEETS of clear coat peeling off. Ugh.
Regardless, I may be putting the GS up for sale. I'll post details and some pics later and see what you guys think I can ask for it. :thumb:

Here's some pics of the Bronco after I cleaned it up today. I also dug out all of the paperwork to show the maintenance records, including when the new engine was installed, and the transmission was rebuilt.
Didn't really want to scrub up the engine bay, so it's still pretty dirty, and it needs a polish/wax/tire shine. What do you guys think it's worth?

You should give it a camo paint job. That'll add to the value!

I honestly think you might be able to get a lot more for it if you tore out that nasty-ass carpet (no offense) and lined it instead.

None taken. That's why I mentioned it in the ad. I actually said to myself earlier today, "If it doesn't sell soon, I'm going to strip the hood and paint it, and strip the carpet and line it". So I'll probably be doing that fairly soon. It really is the worst part of the interior.

Man, people love Broncos! Why all the hate?! :flipoff:
I wouldn't trade the 351 in mine for anything. The ONLY downside to it is MPG.
Well, the bike looks much better in person than in pictures. And let me say this, man is it fast! Mechanically, it seemed good, and I couldn't find anything wrong with it. Don't worry, no decision yet. More details later. It's been a long day.
On a crappy note, the radiator decided to pop a leak, and the alternator is going out on the Bronco. Ugh. I swear she's pissed I'm considering getting rid of her. :technical:
Bronco smirking, 'Trade me will ya? We'll see 'bout that!'
Cool deal on it seeming in good shape in person. Will wait for more updates,.....

He said he's willing, if I pay for the parts. $370. (I think I could find them cheaper than that..) Unfortunately, I just don't have that overhead right now, so I don't see any deal happening. Guess the truck is just going to have to sit. FML.

It's for the best. :p
if it were me, id keep it. if i had hte spare cash, id buy it. but seeing as i have neither one. all i can do is wish you the best
We'll see. I just don't have the overhead to repair it right now, and I'd really hate to have to leave it sitting. I guess time will tell.

I actually just helped my friends uncle paint his bronco camo about a month ago, as long as you dont run around screaming :woohoo: when you get a coors light, you can still hide your inner red-neck :icon_mrgreen:
The inner redneck can be pushed down but never really hidden. No matter how hard you try. Just embrace it. Hell, someone gave me a realtree hay recently and I actually wore it out before realizing I'm quite redneck regardless of trying for years not to be.
If I thought it would add to the value, I'd do it in a heartbeat.
I saw a badass Scout (79ish) with a MARPAT digi paint job when I was stationed in Camp Lejune. Looked amazing. Not too hard to paint but takes FOREVER to make sure it's right.

Well, it's been two months and I still have the Bronco. Anyone want to buy it?! I've got an offer for just enough money to be able to buy this bike, what do you guys think?
http://albanyga.craigslist.org/mcy/3204879433.html
Has a small crack on the gauges, minor paint peeling on one side, and the headlight has a short (going to see if I can address that before I even consider purchasing it). He also mentions that it likes to slip into neutral from 2nd at high RPM, seems like maybe it needs an oil change? I'm going to check that out really well too. If those two things check out/are easy fixes, do you think it's a good bike?
Thanks!
I would suspect a bent shift fork or transmission wear above old oil... Why would fresh, more slippery oil make something NOT slip.

I was thinking a change in weight may be in order. Plus, maybe it's just not engaging well in the first place, and fresh oil could help?

No not worth it, This from a former F4i owner, it was the wife's bike.
The F2 is carbed, and that means temperamental when being throttled.
Her 2006 CBR600F4i Candy tahaitian , 4200 miles in mint condition sold for $4000. That was 1 year ago on consignment at the dealership. That was right at high value blue book.
Hold out for a fuel injected bike, unless you want a tinker toy. That F2 isn't worth the price.

Yeah, I'd much prefer a bike that is FI. Guess I'll just keep holding out! Hoping to find something before riding season ends!
