Title: Newby here - Brissy GS500
Post by: omatic3000 on June 25, 2012, 06:02:55 PM
G'day guys,

Just thought I'd say g'day, in Brisbane. 21, studying Architecture, etc etc.

I've got an '02 GS500 that I use mostly for commuting - upgraded from a (don't shoot me down) Aprilia Scooter at the start of the year, decided I'd get a GS500 after a mate recommended something a bit larger as my first bike, thanks to the LAM Scheme.

Anyway great forum, I've been using bits and bobs from it and having a browse through the wiki, which has been pretty handy in getting an understanding of the bike - I usually do my own mechanical stuff on account of being a cash-strapped uni student/actually liking to muck about with mechanical stuff, though this is my first time with anything bike-related - mostly I've worked on the older Holdens and an old Merc I had for a while (cool cars but effing expensive to run/maintain). Now I just focus on keeping my N13 Pulsar in working order haha.

As well as that there's a couple of things to do to the bike now, I got cut off by some dude in an Accord and dropped the bike, it was low speed but right in front of he RE and a bus stop in peak. Got it all back together and then bloody dropped it again going up Mt Nebo, which in hindsight was probably a bit of a stupid idea in the first place - came into corner realised I was a bit too fast, grabbed too much brake and was too scared to lean it over too far and just lost it. Luckily for me I came off at a reasonably slow speed and only smashed a mirror and the headlight, pain in the arse, but I only have myself to blame for that one. A couple of grazes, bruises and a severely dented sense of pride is all I did to myself at least.

Pic of the bike below from before I crashed it - from a few months ago.

Few things I might pick your brains about, about realigning the front wheel again, but I'll do a quick search first and then post something somewhere more appropriate.

Cheers guys! Will.

G'day and welcome, there's a few of us here, down the coast you got mister, and cods, in Brissy itself you got me and Aussiechick, and Ipswich you got twisted. There's also a few other local members who drop by from time to time. Glad you upgraded from a scooter, shame about your drop though. I'm sure a few ppl will give you guidance about your front end.

Welcome, Will.

I generally don't bother with the Nebo/Glorious thing. Everyone does it. So apart from that reason for not doing it... too many cops, too many Rossi wannabes, not as good as people make out, yadda yadda yadda.

Good thing about the GS500 is, it has the range to get you to other less popular roads that are more fun and have less/no enforcement.

Thanks for the welcome.

And yeah, I think I'll be avoiding Nebo for a while - actually I was suprised by the amount of guys on supersport bikes that were passing, even on corners, crazy. I think I'm more on the cruisy side of life.  :D

Stay off Nebo/Glorious till you get some K's under your belt. And then do it very sedately until you know where all the "Oh Sh*t!" corners are.

Went for a ride over the mountain from the Fernvale side to the Gap. As you come off Mt Nebo into the Gap there is roadworks and it is down to a single lane being operated by traffic lights. I pull up at the lights behind two cars and I place myself in the drivers side mirror, you know, so he can see me. My light is on high beam too by the way as I tend to ride with it on during the day now. Look in my mirrors another few cars come and pull up behind me. Look ahead and notice the driver in front has his reverse lights on. "oh shaZam!" I think. I fumble for the horn as he decides to reverse back for what the f4ck I don't know. I start beeping as well as the car behind me and he stops with his rear quarter panel level with my handlebars. Old dude pops his head out his door. "Don't park so close to me next time" he yells and shuts his door. I'm like oh no he didn't! I bash on the side of his car till he opens the door again. I yell back "Oh so this is my fault? Use ya f'in eyes you old tard!" I ride up next to his driver door and slap his side mirror so it folds in " See this? Use it!" I left him fumbling tryna adjust his mirror back. Still don't know why he was reversing.

Far out, that's the sorta crap that really shits me off, I reckon people need to take a massive chill pill on the road.

It sounds like he got his nose outta joint seeing you behind him at whatever distance and decided to reverse back to give you a scare (psycho behaviour). Good that you gave it back to him though, stupid old jerk. (Not that all oldies are jerks, but in this case..)

Just your typical hero behaviour in a car. The car gives them balls. Should hopped off the bike, whipped out your pair of side cutters and cut his tire valve. Cut two cause people only carry one spare.

Just another reason to stay away from that place.

Saw a nice duke yesterday at rider training. 800ie. He said he got it from hinterland mototcycles. Told them what he wanted and they found it for him. Paid six and a bit for it, 2003. It was nice :)

Fear Of Missing Out

Yeah, well you might forget. So I'll text you and then you can see if you're available. After all, you complained of not being ASKed. Texting me a date so I then may ask you to go riding on that date is not really asking you, is it  :cookoo:

Ah, the rider training... it was ok. I did pick up some stuff. I'll be putting up a write-up of it later.

Unfortunately I didn't get the duke rider's number. But I'm pretty sure he'll be on the next training day on the 22nd for Level 2.
