Today my tach just went to the peg for a split second and then it just died. Now there is no movement at all. I attempted percussive repair with the palm of my hand but no go. I am pretty sure this is a mechanical tach. Should I pull the cable out first? Thanks

Yeah, my first thought was to hit it. But I see you already tried that.
My next thought would be to see if maybe the cable wiggled itself free from either end.
Good Suggestion. It happened as I pulled in the garage last night after dark and I was tired and somewhat disgustded so I just went in the house. It will be sitting there tonight awaiting my ministrations. :technical:
Your cable popped out. Happened to me as well. The vibration from the engine wriggles it loose .
If it snapped inside, I would take the entire cable off til you can find a replacement. Find a way to cap it off, and keep riding.
Mystery solved!!! The nut that holds the cable to the tach vibrated loose allowing the cable to disconnect. Lubed the cable with 3 in 1 oil and retightened the nut. That will hold it until the next time
:woohoo: I was right about something!!!
