Title: Carbs? Idle issues and gas leak....
Post by: Alphad0g on July 13, 2012, 08:34:00 AM
Incoming massive wall of text.

So, I've been lurking this forum for a while, purchased a 2007 Suzuki gs500f a few months back and did and F-to-E conversion. Got her registered and such and started riding, which lasted all of about 3 days. On a sunny ride one day, the bike started lurching on the road and stopped running. Drained the carbs, she started running fine. Ran some sea-foam through the system, and it was running like a dream.....until I took her out for a ride the other day. I got maybe a quarter of a mile up the road before I felt a cold spray on my right leg, which turned out to be gas. I immediately turned around to go home after stopping to check the problem, and the bike revved up to 4k rpms just setting there. At first, the problem dissappeared when I shifted, but by the time I got home, it wouldnt drop under 4k rpms for any reason. Checked the throttle and the choke cable, they arent caught up on anything. Adjusted the throttle-knob-thing to no avail. Left the bike alone outside and decided to work on it the next day.

Well, it rained that night, and I was greeted the next morning by a rainbow puddle from my bike to the nearest stormdrain. All but maybe a pint of gas leaked out overnight. It had stopped leaking after I parked it, and the gas was coming from that drain hose on the airbox. A friend of mine said I needed to pull my carbs and clean them, but I figured it would be a good idea to check with you guys to make sure if that may be the problem.

I'd love to be riding again soon, this has all just been a big headache.

Did you leave the petcock on PRIme?  Our bikes have weak jet needle seats.  We have vacuum style petcocks.  See the following picture for how it works:  http://wiki.gstwins.com/index.php?n=Upgrades.Petcock

Also, the high idle is called hanging idle.  Blame it on the emissions police.  It's probably running lean.  Check out this thread on how to fix:  http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=41199.0

The petcock was one of the first things I checked. It was just set to ON. The only time I ran it on PRIme was when I first got the bike after it had been setting up for a few months.
