Title: Update March 2013! Completed - mods mods mods
Post by: Gibo on July 14, 2012, 01:43:24 AM
UPDATE 2013 See Latest post for finished product.

Hello thar!, I decided I want to be a bit vein and make a thread about my ongoing obsession with my GS  :thumb:

I have spent a while lurking this forum, it is so helpful and I am glad it is here.

Ive had it for a while now, I started to get the mod bug from my mate who modifies and tracks his car. Since I do not have as much money as him I felt I can make the bike as best as I can. Being in Aus means the exchange rate is making it easy to find bits cheaper from around the world.  I am currently saving my cash for either a cbr1000 or buy my other mates zx12r, the GS will then be stipped of the road mods and turned into a tracker with the occasional commute and nasho/putty (live in Sydney) fang. I intend to use the GS to learn the tracks without fear of ruining a much more expensive bike... if I do wreck it, I can have fun fixing it  :D . I recently found this vid and has given me some inspiration http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gymLfLw654Q , I am in the process of joining a club so I can get my race license (a requirement of a race license in NSW is that you must be a member of a club that races and you must have a recommendation from a member). But before that I will do a few track days and superbike school courses at Eastern Creek :) . I understand fully that I am over-investing in a possible tracker but I cannot seem to stop myself, the GS gives me such confidence when I ride and is never intimidating. Because it is not intimidating it allows you to take it a step further each time and spend time improving your posture, lines, awareness and safety. At the end of the day when I ride a motorbike hard, I can go fast in a straight line on anything I however love mastering the art of cornering and doing it while passing others (within reason and with safety in mind) on faster bikes that (sometimes) scream past you on the straight but you catch on the twisties tickles the ego and only makes me love it more :o , anyway I made this thread to give you guys some bike porn. Enjoy.

In regards to items that won't be using, I will be selling allot of them and will make a thread in the for sale section when I intend to do this. It may be a while though... The items I will be selling will be on Ebay at the same time.  I will list the items for a discount on GSTwins when I do, or just beg me if you don't have much money and I can negotiate. I will be selling some items as a kit i.e. Front Brake Kit - stock gs callipers, ebc hh pads (6 months old), stainless steel lines, stock master cylinder, ASV black lever no damage, clean and bled/unbled.

due to the flash you cant see it but the plate is black, the scratches I am considering repainting the fairing cowl.

Now what I am going to do

I currently have received most the parts to do the next round of mods, all I am waiting for is a Koso RX-2N (not the GP one as I did not want the tacho cutting off at 10 or going to 20k), Kat front rotors (current ones from the states came a bit rusty and thin) , an 08 gixxer 1000 banjo bolt for the front master cylinder as the kat banjo in the stainless steel line kit I bought does not fit and two new tires (I have not decided what I want but am leaning towards Pirelli Diablo Rosso II's or some other road race tire (I believe you can special order 110/70 fronts if the 120/70 does not cut it).

I wont list all the mods to be done but the main ones are:

gsx750f 97 front end (bought it with already modified stem)
gsx750f 2002 rear wheel (I have the torque rod already bent)
install gold valves and race tech springs in kat forks
install race tech (eibach make the springs) spring on an 07 R6 shock (i am fat so I need the much heavier spring :( )
investigate cutting the rear luggage rails and tidy up the ass
install new tacho (need to make a bracket on the front fairing) while leaving room for the GPS mount somewhere  :dunno_black:
remove all fuel system from the carbs (pingel my petcock, bypass frame petcock)
por 15 my tank
install heavier clutch springs and new friction plates
install 22.5 pilot to finetune (will explore the screws while im down there)
paint the engine/sprocket covers black
macgyver an ebay steering damper on - I know it is NOT needed, I just want to put it on OK
+ heaps of other stuff.

I will just link a heap of pics to show what has arrived. GREAT PICS

http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/7030/stockrotor.jpg - stock gs rotor
http://img193.imageshack.us/img193/6889/stockstuff.jpg - ignore the center stand, MINE! but there are stock rearsets, fuel lines and mirrors/bars/grips
http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/1662/stufftogiveaway.jpg - kat front end stuff, rotors bars, top tripple, switches, speedo pickup, brake mc+lines

Also including the current front end, rear wheel and other shaZam! I cant remember.

Today:

Prepped and painted the kat tripple (it was in a bad way), painted some brake bolts black, painted the kat 4 pot calipers red  8) , primed the kat lower forks for a gold paint job tomorrow as the previous paint has been ruined by a fluid leak as some point (see pics) and install a lithium battery. The ebay HID ballast is parasitic drawring from the battery when the bike is off so I got an equally ebay battery disconnect, I am yet to figure this out yet so I did not put it in and just unscrewed the positive at the terminal when I was done for the day.

everything is yellow tac'd and taped off, terrible paint job, I will redo.

kat tripple needed some love... and paint. Its been under the handlebar stay for many years! Since im using fork mounted clip-ons I can do away with it.

You don't need to comment or compliment, this is just a place for me to spam myself when I have too much free time. I may be asking for some help in the comming weeks in regards to allot of this. Thank you for your time. I will try to keep this thread updated between work and weekend tafe.

Not too sure about the caliper paint job, I think I might wet sand and give it another coat. I will sand the paint off the bolt holes.

Forks are underway, waiting for the first coat to dry before I put a few more coats on. I will then leave it to dry for a day, wet sand and apply a few more coats and maybe a clear. I understand this paint will come off fairly easily and powdercoating is better but I will do that when/if it comes to it.

you COULD use touchup paint. , but you can tell its been done. up close anyhoo.  is that a scratch/scratches or paint transfer? ( from a low speed bump )

I like your trick for painting your bolt heads. :)  I'm also digging your front end color scheme, I think that's going to be sharp.  For some reason I really like painted forks, it's something that draws my eye favorably to a bike but doesn't compute right away.  I need to look it over and ask "Why am I digging this so much?", that's right the forks are done.  Even though it's a decent patch of paint, it's subtle in a way.  Well, at least that's how my brain works, either way, I like it!

You might try using epoxy paint as it cures much harder.

Awesome thanks, Ill give that paint a go.

Im not sure how the scratches got on the back, it was the previous owner. They look deep like it was backed into or done with a screwdriver.

I messed up the fork paint job, sprayed on a wet humid day and it ran :(

Got a quote from the local powdercoater to do gold for $80... I will probably do that. I am now thinking to get my rims powdercoated gold :D .... maybe not. I don't want to be guilty of copying my mates ZX12R :( .

I will just disassemble and powdercoat the lower forks then rebuild the forks, I will get a mechanic/mate to do the gold valves as I REALLY do not want to do it wrong. I will take it to Terry Hay (Shock Treatment) to set it up for the track once its done.

Pics to come of my ruined paint.

WOW, lots going on. denn thinking of doing a koso guages on mine as well but that has to wait for a bit. just looked at the tool set that i'm looking at getting for school. great way to spend $5680. nice going so far. the more pics and what you learned on the install would be helpful, but i have time before i get to that point of my build.

Sorry for the lack of updates lately, It has been slow for the moment.

So far got the hugger installed, battery disconnect switch (to stop the inverter on the HID's draining the battery) and  some of those fab Brisk plugs.

The Kat forks have been powdercoated gold and then sent to Shock Treatment (a motorbike racing prep shop) to do the gold valves, racetech springs and to put the racetech springs on the R6 shock. The crappy plastic preload adjusters that got knocked off in shipping need to be replaced. I am currently on Katriders looking around to see if I can get the ones TMod makes there (they look awesome). Interesting when I gave them the forks they told me to throw the "All-Balls" seal kit that I provided in the bin as they would not use them as they said they were of "lower quality" than the OEM seals. I hope the coating did not screw me either as some powder got in the lower fork legs.

The forks I bought had come off a GS so I understand the stem and everything will just be bolt on. I have no idea about fairing clearances at the moment, Maybe someone can hint if the Kat forks will fit on the F without much trouble to the fairings.

I had my tires arrive, I then realised I should have just got them from the shop so they can fit them for free :( - Pirelli Diablo ROSSO II's 110/70 and 150/60 ZR-17.

I am sad that abc don't make bike disks :( .

Once I get the forks back I will start the big work, untill then study is taking up my weekends for work .

The battery shutoff was meant for car terminals, I just used a long bolt and made it fit, I do not think that It is as strong as I want though (I fear It may snap off after a very heavy jolt from the battery as it was tightened fairly tight) I will take a pic later.

The LED indicators were done by replacing the flasher relay with an LED one from ebay, then following the instructions with a soldering iron from a how-to thread on gstwins. Took 25 mins.

I got the forks and shock back from the shop, the preload adjusters are there for looks as the gold valves make the adjusters useless. They have been powdercoated, racetech springs, gold valves, new bushes, OEM seals (the shop told me they refuse to use the All balls seals as they are not as good as the OEM ones and they are more prone to leaking, I took their word on that considering they run some of the best race bikes around here).

I am going to sand down the Tokico 4 pots again and redo the paint, ordered a new seal kit for them. Considering getting a mechanic mate or the shop to put together my brakes in case anything I do is incorrect.

New tires came, Pirelli Diablo Rosso II's, a bit much for the road but should be ok for novice track learning. I chose to keep the gs wheel at the front rather than the Kats 120 to keep the GS's flickability. 110/70 and 150/60. I hope the rear hugger can take the larger tire at the back had about 1.5-2cm clearance on the 140 sport demon so I guess I will find out.

Got the week off in two weeks (eye surgery) so I will try to swap the rear and start on the fuel tank then. I will do the front last due to the Koso which is scarring me. I am also a bit vague regarding fitting modified stem of the  Kat to the GS.

It is taking a while to crank and start now that I replaced the spark plugs with the Brisk plugs that were hyped in another thread, it is backfiring a few times before starting.
The plugs came with two metal caps that went over the tops of them but I took them off to fit them, call me an idiot but do I need them and how do I fit them? With the caps (or something like that) on they would not "click" in to the cover.

I have a critical question about these Katana 750 97 forks as I am putting them together to put on.

I read somewhere that you don't need the upper handlebar stay (the top bit on the Katana where the handlebars clamp to) so I got some clip ons to put  on the forks.

This is the part in question : http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/2051/20120922161345resized.jpg

DO I NEED THIS PART??? , I would prefer to chuck it as it is ugly and I don't need the bars at that height. If I do need it, I guess I will have to cut the bar mounts off and repaint it.

Also: It is taking a while to crank and start now that I replaced the spark plugs with the Brisk plugs that were hyped in another thread, it is backfiring a few times before starting.

Thanks for any responses.

well, okay it backfires, but you didnt explicitly state whether it starts faster?
Was it just cranking but not catching at all, before?
(in which case, my newb mechanic's mind says you have bigger problems than spark plugs somewhere)

With NGK Iridium plugs, started fine, started up like stock. Replaced with Brisk plugs, now takes allot of effort to start (maybe 10 seconds of pressing the button) and backfires once or twice in the process. Once it has started it runs fine.

brisk plugs, despite everyones great love for them, are going to pull more juice from the coils.
You should test your coils, and signal generator just in case. They may be weak/failing and the brisk plugs may
be enough to push them over the edge.

Trigger coils will not get affected, they are on the other side of a TCI. You wont likely lose the ignition coils either. They actually will be fried if you dead short the wire to ground. Not if you put it to where it has to jump a bigger gap.
Cool.

but if a coil is bad, would the plug that requires more voltage not fire as efficiently? I'm not saying the plug is killing it, but may require more potential than the coil is capable of putting out at the time.

If all he changed was the plugs, shouldn't the plugs then be the problem?

(its possible that he got bad plugs out of the box- it happens)

anyone know what the stubby can is? Looks kinda neat, Im assumeing he took it off bc it was just a slip on...

ASV levers for a SV650 with SV650 perch. I am replacing the entire front end and replacing  ASV Shorty levers with GSXR perches. Might chuck em up for sale when im done.

News: I have replaced the rear but the inner brake pad of the rear brake is making contact with the inner side of the rotor. Will this be an issue as there is a little friction? And how can I overcome it...

Flex the brake a few times and let the caliper adjust, then let it wear a bit and you should be okay.

Update :O

All together, took a while. Needs a clean, will use the old black grips (red is a bit much). Might paint it all black, not sure.

Question, how to set the Koso shift light?

I am still scrubbing in the tires and it is wet but.. Very happy, stops like I hit a wall (stoppies in the damp :) )and feel much nicer with the larger rear, new shock and new front.

Thanks to Ben from Extreme Creations for helping me out a bit.

Ok, sorted the shift light. Settings button pressed 7 times.

Update: Took it out again, love the brakes so much. It stops better than I had hoped, consistent and linear pressure, the tires are such a huge leap forward from even the Sport Demons. I hope to track it in the next few weeks but first I will need to take all the fairings and other bling off it. Putting the Koso on the handbars aids me in this as I do not need to find a place for it when I do track it. I might need to take it to the mates dyno as I wish to get the jetting just right.

I know ill get asked why not track the zx, but to find the limit on a zx on the track you would need to be doing stupid speeds. That thing can eat any of the litre bikes ( with a couple of mods) and it is just a bit heavy to lug around. I was at the shop earlier and being built is a turbo + muzzy zx12, they are aiming for 450+ rwhp and are not even going to extend the swingarm? Crazy mofos.

Almost time to thin the spare parts pool. Soon to be sold are:

- ASV levers with perches, the ones from the first page of this thread. The ones on the bike now are shorty GSXR1000 ones with 07 gixer perches. I may sell the brake perch/lever/ss brake line and front brake with EBC pads as one ready to bolt on.

- SM Type II Bars

- GS Gauges with upgraded LED's (mods 100% working) great condition

- Screaming Demon Slip on exhaust

- 07 rear wheel

- 110/60 and 140/70 sport demon 80%

- Front EBC wave rotor + rear EBC rotor

- 07 GS front Forks with progressive springs

- Kat 750 rear shock, bolt on for newer GS's

- 07 Triple tree and top clamp

- Rear brake torque arm

- 1997 GSX750F front wheel (silver) with a shaZam! tire

+ other parts I cannot remember (jets, controls, grips)

Looks like I will keep the ZX12 stock(ish)

A Cowl tech one that had been passed around to a few members. I would not buy from them, apparently they are a little dodgy (the service) from what I have read.

When i read that name red flag's popped up. I have read the story's on them. Be nice if there was another company who made seat cowls for these bikes. To bad i cant do fiberglass or i would making these things left and right. Wonder if there is any other bikes cowls that work gs500's.

There was a thread not too long ago about a cowl from a Honda that works. I have one (not one the bike yet) and it fits fairly well.
