Title: Maintenance checklist - 07 but basically new
Post by: gti5notrkt on July 15, 2012, 02:51:32 PM
This past weekend I purchased a showroom condition 2007 GS500F with only 235 original miles for $2500. The bike had been very lightly used and stored in a cool, mostly below ground garage out of sunlight. There is zero surface rust that I can see. The battery barely held any charge (not surprising) and I have a MotoBatt AGM on order. The bike starts easily and the carbs appear to be well adjusted with no stumbling/bogging. The seller told me the bike was ridden for about 50 miles in this Spring. Even though the first service isn't due for another 300mi, I'm thinking at a minimum I need to do the following;

Replace brake fluid
Oil change/filter
Air filter
Complete drain of fuel tank and float bowls
Check chain tension/lube
Replace battery

Date codes on the tires are 3806 (Oct, 2006). Visually they are in nearly new condition (mold whiskers still on the sides, no cracks, still somewhat tacky to touch). Debating whether to change immediately or wait and have some mounted/balanced during the 600mi dealer checkup.

Anything else I'm missing?

Jon.

Everything you quoted is exactly what I would do, minus the air filter. It doesn't degrade and won't have particulate in it since it hasn't been ridden.

As for the tires, I'd ride them and check them frequently for stress cracking.

Oil/filter change is most important.

If your battery works fine, I don't see any reason to replace it. Also, no reason to replace the air filter. I think the service interval on it is 20,000 miles. Its not going to wear out sitting around.

If you are looking for other stuff to do, you could check the valve clearances. I'm sure they are in spec, but it would be good to know what your clearances are to start with. Suzuki recommends you check/adjust the valves every 4,000 miles.

The service schedule calls for the head bolts to be retorqued at 1k.........its often overlooked. Make sure it gets done or you might (like many other GS owners) suffer a leaky base gasket  :thumb:
