Title: Additional fuel tank idea?
Post by: mfleck on July 15, 2012, 05:47:52 PM

Ok so I'm taking a big trip and though about fastening this to my rack and feeding it into my fuel system

Tell me what you think I could strap it to my rack and it's three gallons. Besides any tie a bike tips there is always gas and it will be at the back of the bike.

From a legal standpoint I'm pretty sure it would be illegal in all states to feed a fuel line from a plastic temporary container tied to the back of your bike to your fuel system. From a safety and common sense standpoint, I can't understand why anyone would want to. You get decent range with the GS500 and plenty of range on reserve to find a gas station. If you're going to be out in Timbuktu with no where to get gas, is it really that big of a deal to un-bungee the container and poor the gas in the tank?

Good point, I did look at some other options like taking the tank and having two and a half inches to the middle from the bottom to the top. What's your take on that one. Oh and how far of range can these thing hit? I've done 150 before refueling out of fear.

Range.... OK... well today I hit reserve at 335km (209 miles) and put in 14 liters (with a 20 liter tank - 4 of which is reserve). That was a fuel economy of 23.9km per liter. If I only use half my reserve I can get an additional 48kms (30 miles) before I should tank up. For a range of 365km (230 miles) and STILL have fuel left.

If you have the 17 liter tank your range will be less.

Before you do any distance riding you NEED to know what ranges Your bike can get so....

1. Fill her up
2. Reset the trip meter
3. ride until you hit reserve and take note of the trip meter distance
4. Find gas station and fill up.
5. Flip back to On and reset trip meter.
6. Ride until you hit reserve.
7. Take not of trip meter distance and go tank up.
8. Flip back to on, reset trip meter and ride off.

The two readings you got give you a rough idea of you range Before you hit your one gallon reserve. Work out the fuel economy and then how far you can get on half a gallon. Add that distance to your lowest trip meter reading and you have a rough idea on your range while still having gas in the tank.

Seriously, I doubt you would need to take fuel along to anywhere. Pretty sure you can find gas within your bike's range.

Your suggestion gives me shivers  :icon_eek: You need to consider not just your safety but that of other road users. Do it here in the UK and the police would throw the book at you and if you did have an accident the insurnace companies would laugh in your face before telling you to jog on. Bikes can give off a lot of sparks when they take a slide down the road and have a lot of exposed and very hot surfaces   :dunno_black:

However If I had no option and I would go with one of these

If I was riding my basket case Virago, then I'd consider carrying a fuel can in my luggage on account of it's 80 mile range. On my GS500 though, I wouldn't even bother, as there are plenty of gas stations around. I usually fill up when my trip meter hits 200 miles instead of waiting to hit my reserve capacity. With the range available on a properly running GS500 and the refueling infrastructure that is available, there is no need to haul an extra fuel can.
