I have just finished rebuilding the top end of my '01 gs500. One of the exhaust valves melted into the seat. I had the valves and head milled, and lapped by a machine shop. I have compression, spark, fuel, and air getting into the cylinders. It does not even try to turn over. I've tried everything in my shop manual. I cannot figure it out and have no idea what to try next.
starter relay?? :dunno_black:
#5100
1. Clutch safety switch: Working? Clutch pulled in? If not working, did you try shorting the wires?
2. Kill switch?
3. Side stand and neutral? Must be in neutral OR side stand up for bike to run.
Does starter relay click? Do lights work?
When he says it doesnt even turn over.. I think...the engine is spinning just not firing at all ..not even a sputter.
But I think he means it IS turning over.

QuoteIt does not even try to turn over
To me, that means it's not cranking. If it's not cranking, the safety switches are suspect as is the starter relay.
how can you get spark without the engine spinning?

Sorry for the confusion, It is turning over but I couldn't get it to fire.
I have solved that, I had the timing off a little bit. However. Now I can get it to fire up but it will not stay running. Just before all of this started I re-jetted it(never tried to start it though) I put in 20 pilot needle, 62.5 mid, and 142.5 mains. (the old ones are 17.5 pilot needle, 60mid, and 127.5 mains) Could this be causing the engine to flood and stall itself out? I don't have time now tonight to put the old jets back in, but I'm going to to try it tomorrow after work.
I have a jardine exhaust and K&N air filter, that's why I thought I needed to rejet it(I got the new jet sizes off the GS Wiki)
