Title: GS500F Fairing Question
Post by: stokes776 on July 21, 2012, 09:45:59 PM
Hello all!

I recently purchased my first bike, 2004 GS500F and have been lurking this site for a while. Love it so far. Have already cleaned the chain, changed the oil and started considering doing some more work to this bike.

To that end, I have some questions about the fairings.  I purchased it with cracks in the left fairing, both on the top (as in picture) and it looks like the PO overtightened one of the bolts and cracked more of the plastic down below. Then stupidly, while trying to remove the stickers, let some of the Goo Gone drizzle down the right fairing and that seems to have destroyed some of the paint (pictures below). I have contacted a fellow GSTWINS member and will hopefully have some new side fairings on the way, but I have some other questions!

Two questions

1. In the crack, it looks like its NOT just the side fairing, but also the black plastic piece that is cracked and might need replaced. This looks to be called "UPPER INNER FAIRING" and might be this part? http://www.ebay.com/itm/VERY-NICE-SUZUKI-GS500F-04-05-06-07-08-09-FRONT-UPPER-DASH-PANEL-FAIRING-/290640991348?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item43ab8d9474#ht_500wt_1180

Can anyone confirm from the pics that its cracked and that I am looking at the right part?

2. Any hope for the Goo Gone disaster?  I think it ate away the paint.  I was considering taking some black paint and that might help most of it, but then the fairings were bought as a set, so I figured I will see what the new one looks like and just put it on.  Maybe sell the one I damaged?

Anyone have any ideas on if I can/should fix the one I messed up or just try to sell it?

Hate to bump, but figured I would give it a single one since the forums seems much more lively during the week! (Everyone must be out riding on the weekends!)

Also, my first question references picture #2 and #3

My second references #1 and #4

Sorry, they got out of order

To answer #1, yes, you are looking at the right part. However, you may not need to replace it. Plastex should work fine to fix the crack. On the other hand, they can usually be obtained relatively cheaply, so it's your call.
