Title: Hi ho, Hi ho back to school I go...
Post by: john on December 19, 2003, 03:09:58 PM
Just enrolled back into college   Gotta have some sort of degree if I want a job.   I took some night classes 10 years ago figuring I should at least get an associates degree in business but after a couple years my job position got good enough and secure enough I stopped going.  Now I figured out my finances and calculated I could go back with a 4 class a semester load and finish by next fall/winter so I made the plunge!

Annd is the one who insisted I go back and finish what I started.  She was right, I just needed to hear it from her.

Mini-mester starts in 3 weeks (10 straight days 4 hours a day).  Then regular semester starts the 20th.  I need to get my brain working again as I haven't used it in years!  lol!

Congratulations from a fellow non-traditional student on your decision to go for it!   :thumb:

not here anyway!

Good for you for going back. Much harder IMO to go back older...easier to stay up studying when you're young than when you have family, etc...

Another Colegian joins the mix. Good to hear, you wont regret it.
I ahve found in my last 2 years that lunch beer breaks really help the day progress... and a nice by product is that there is not to much funnier than an economics or engineering class when your right drunk.

I started back about a year ago. I graduated 12 years ago with an associates degree. Now it's time to finish the BS (no pun intended) that I started in '84. Just signed up for 10 hours along with working a full time & part time job. It really is tougher the older you get.

Way to go man!! Just show up, the rest will take care of itself.I went back in 2001 to Drexel after six years of screwing around. I had a S**t job at the time.  It was rough, and aceing classes in Calculus and Computer Science when i was only qualified to manage a copy center didn't exactly make me happier. Three years of it have gone by like a shot, i'm almost done and got a job in the field already. Riding my GS home from classes has made it so much more bearable. I go four nights a week after work, some nights i truly hate it. I just think of how much better off i'll be in 2005.

Good for you!  As much as it sucks to lose your job, it may set you on the path for future success.

welcome back to the fold... muahahahahahaa.....

that's coming from someone who came to school in 1990 and haven't ever really left.  After the first 6 years they gave me a masters and a job.  Ever since I've been adding slowly but surely to a couple other degrees.

From my personal experience as a nontradional student and from teaching them at a couple different universities, they usually are much more focused and wind up getting alot more out of my classes than the typical 18 year old.

Congrats.

Jake

Yeah, I went back after about 7 years out, and took some undergrad. courses in another field.  It really seemed like the other students had air between their ears.  I think I was the only person who read the textbook.  I definitely got more out of it than they did.

But I was only taking one course at a time (over "lunch break"), and I think graduate classes would have been completely different.

I recently completed all of my course work for a degree in Geography which took almost ten years. I am proud to say that the feeling of accomplishment has nothing to do with receiving the actually piece of paper. The fact that you stick with it and complete this obstacle, that no one will ever take from you is the most rewarding aspect of the whole process.

You still might  end up in a cushy cube, doing routine stuff, and the treat of being laid off will always linger, but at least no one can ever take this way for you.

I wish you the best in all of your endeavors.

Kewl!  :thumb:
I'm going back to school for my degree in Nursing this year. Then, I plan to take that degree and eventually become a Nurse Practitioner.
Ahh, school days...
As the schoolmaster would say, "Ya can't have any puddin' if ya don't finish yer meat!!!"

Thanx, Jake!
I'm VERY excited about some of the medical training that's available out here!
Stanford has a great NP/PA program.
Sounds like you've got some pretty serious experience in the field.  You're a valuable resource!  :thumb:
