Title: Fairing question
Post by: Somnospeed on July 22, 2012, 08:41:14 PM
Hey everyone,

I just joined here and just bought a 2000 GS500E. I've had it a week and LOVE this bike! It's just what I was looking for, even though I didn't really know what I was looking for.  I'm loving this site too.
I just upgraded (in size at least) from a 1971 Honda CL350 so this thing rides like an absolute dream for me.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone could help me find the fairing on this bike in the link. My google search turned up nothing. http://www.whaccessories.com/images/MBDGS500.jpg (http://www.whaccessories.com/images/MBDGS500.jpg)

Thanks a lot and you'll be hearing from me more, I'm sure.

Hey! Welcome to the club!

As for your fairings, they don't sell them as parts for older bikes, since Suzuki came out with the faired version of the bike in 2004, everything before that was an 'E' naked model.

You can buy all of the parts to do this conversion online, but it'll be very expensive, but a lot of guys around here tend to do the opposite conversion, faired to naked.

So you're better option is to find someone who is going to do or has done the conversion and buy the whole fairing body kit from them (but be careful that they didn't crash it and that's why they're doing the naked conversion!).

I'm sure there are a few people who can give you a few more tidbits of info than me. :thumb:

Thanks for the info. I'm not really interested in the large fairings though. I want one the size of the one in the pic or smaller. I like the naked look for sure but also like the cafe-inspired quarter fairings. I'm just not really having any luck finding any. I might end up using one from a Ducati Monster but I'm concerned about fitting it. I'm no machine operator so making any type of custom mounting hardware is probably not for me.
Thanks again though.

Keep an eye out in the For Sale subforum on this site.  Lower chin fairings can be hard to come by, but a few pop up every now and then.  The headlight fairings are a little easier to find.  Definately search through the For Sale section, I do remember a couple posted, just don't know if they were sold yet.

Not sure what you searched for, but I found similar products almost immediately when I went to Google. Search for 'GS500 Belly Pan' and the first result is this: http://www.nicecycle.com/GS500-Bellypan-s/4452.htm (http://www.nicecycle.com/GS500-Bellypan-s/4452.htm)

Maybe not as cheap as you were hoping to find, though. Keep an eye out on fleabay as they show up there from time to time, too.

The headlight (aka cockpit) fairing as OEM is hard to find. Skidmarx makes one that is very close to OEM. I have it on Junior, my red bike.

Belly pans are also hard to find. The closest to the OEM is by Gimbel (I had one and side-by-side nearly identical). You paint it. It comes primed.

Skidmarx makes a belly pan. No picture, but based on their other ones it is close to OEM. Cheaper than Gimbel.

Thanks for the tips and thanks for searching. The most likely reason I did not find that belly pan is because I am not looking for a belly pan. I am looking for the quarter fairing for the headlight. Similar to the Ducati Monster or any of the old cafe bikes.
That OEM-like one on one of the links posted is definitely what I'm talking about. But I'm afraid to even ask what the shipping would cost from the UK.
I ended up buying one from Dime City Cycles. It's a cafe racer shop. They sell universal wasp type quarter fairings that are supposed to fit most 7" headlights. I'm going to see if I can make it fit. The shop seems to think I can mount it with little modification so I'm giving it a shot. It was only $80 shipped.

FYI: This fairing does not fit. I knew it would not be a direct mount but I thought I could modify it to fit but nope. I would need to change it so much it would lose any sense of cool. Anyone wanna buy it??  :D
