Title: Bikes dies on shifting out of N. Stranded, need help asap.
Post by: SuperFish on July 25, 2012, 01:01:54 PM
Hey all, im having some issues and was hoping for some help. Its an '04. I jus gotthe bike. Its slow to start (sometimes a couple tries) and sometimes dies if i clutch and coast. Also, it feels like it takes an extra amount of time on full choke before it gets warm and wont die. On the way to work, noticed what i THINK is a backfire, slight tho (and i could be wrong aboutthat). Once parked, i started it back up. I put it into 1st and it died immediately, same with second. I laid the bike down this earlier today at a stop and what i think was gas, maybe half a cup, leaked on the floor. Bike didnt start immediately but did about an hour later. All i have is the stock tool kit and very little mechanical knowledge. Any help to get me home tonight?

Iniially posted in the wrong forum, sorry.

Did you have the kickstand down when you tried to shift out of neutral? The GS has a safety switch that won't let you do that when the bike is running for safety. Don't want to go riding down the road with the kickstand down!

If it dies when you shift into 1st...check the kickstand safety switch.

Yup, sidestand switch is what it's got to be for those symptoms.

Seems you posted your question twice! I answered the other posting so here is the same answer again:

First guess is gas damaged the side stand switch.

The bike will not run in gear if the side stand is down. That is a safety interlock.
Check the side stand switch. The wires connect under the seat. You can trace the wire and short it if the side stand switch is bad.

To test: Put the bike on the center stand. With bike on and not running, put into gear. As you raise and loser the side stand, you can hear a click of the side stand relay which is located on the right side to the right of the battery.

You can press in the plunger of the side stand switch with your finger when the side stand is down, in case you can't get the bike on the center stand.

Thanks for the help everyone. I was definately sweating; The quick feedback (while making me feel stupid) was exactly it. Yes, adidas, I was in a bit of a haze, posting here and a local forum on my phone and got ALL MIXED UP!
