Title: 89 gs500e bobber/fighter project Tail chop UPDATE 30-8-12!!
Post by: da_fonz on July 28, 2012, 04:42:41 PM
Hello fellow gstwins

my name is andrew aka The Fonz  :thumb:
live on the sunny Gold Coast Australia.

recently bought a tidy 1989 gs500e with original 3500kms! for a sum of $1000 unregistered.
got it registered a couple of weeks ago and now the project begins.

plans are gsxr forks, gsxr swing arm and tyre, suspended seat-no tail wraped in ostrich skin, twin round headlight and buel screen maybee and a few more bits and pieces.

basically i have put on a streetfighter front end i had lying around, sprayed the whole bike basically satin 2pac black, was going to go for an orange frame but kinda liking the blacked out option.
cut down the stock muffler  :D litterally took me 15mins! haha.

installed aftermarket tail light and indicators the other day, has anyone had dramas with the indicators not flashing after you installed aftermarket ones?
i got them working eventually by chance of placing the old indicator unit inline with the new ones and they worked? but as soon as you removed them (wires) they would just stay on?
i just dodgily installed them inline with the new ones and taped up the bulb so you couldnt see them when they were flashing and hid them under my tail.

(dont know if that all makes sense to you guys)??

so basically this is it so far. waiting to move back into my own house so i can take a 9" grinder to the tail  :icon_twisted:

When i got it.

I am liking the the bike so far, any pictures of how you did the exhaust? was there much change in sound? did you have to mess with the jets? sorry for all the questions but I like the look  :thumb:

hi DavisGs,

exhaust was really easy if you have access to a welder.

basically i cut the whole muffler off to make it easier to work with.

get a rough idea on how long you want it mines about 200mm long aprox 8"
i used a big metal drop saw and cut your black tip section off,
then cut the muffler to the desired length and re weld on.

i also drilled out the little pipe inside the muffler tip.

sounds great i'm happy with it.

i havent messed with the jets at all, seems fine pulls a little harder than before and more responsive, i will eventually re-jet once i get my lunchbox filter.

heres a quick vid :)

There are a couple of us here
I am in Nerang and Michael is near Broadbeach.
We usually meet up on a Sunday for a ride!
Michael is busy this weekend but I think A couple of Brissy riders are meeting up for a ride.
Most of the Aussies hang out here

Just so you know... if the cops want to be dicks, they'll get you for fender chop and shortened can. So.... don't ride Glorious during a blitz and you should be ok  :thumb:

cops pick on you for the most ridiculous stuff over here, i have been into high performance cars all my life and have had multiple and driving them is a big risk around here.
they will go through ditches, over traffic islands and whatever they can to pull you over if they see you drive past in a "hotted" up car.

as for the "fender chop" i will basically have no fender soon haha just a suspended seat on a custom subframe that im going to start building soon. so they will have fun with that i supose.

Coppers on the Gold Coast are the worst for the modded bike as well as the modded cars so you pretty much take your chance when you want to change something here. :cookoo:

Fonz,

If you have the funds, time and expertise you can whack on whatever size swingarm you want - but - keep in mind the chain needs to marry up with the front sprocket.

I think you'll find a 150 tire will still just fit and will be fine with the front sprocket, anything larger will be trouble.

well i basically bought this bike to be a "project" that sat unregisterd in my garage untill it was all finished then register it and ride it. but got to eager and got it registered straight away haha as to my fiance's disgust, thankfully she loves bikes! hahaha wish she was so passonate about my project and race cars like she is with my bike :(

so your saying a 150 will fit on the stock rim? or a bandit/katana one?

also thinkning about making a custom manifold for my un used ct12 turbo :P

There is a thread about it here. You need to install some diodes and a led flasher. Do a search for lrd diode or something like that

they are write ups about led's! the ones i installed are normal globes not leds, so in theory they should work?

Change your flasher as they may be lower flash rating. you can buy flashers that rate from 1 to 100

heres an ebay link so you can see what I am referring to.
I had similar trouble with my new blinkers until I changed the flasher.
Not saying thats the problem but its a relatively cheap start.

ok thanks mate,
they work now, but like i said i have to run the standard rear bulbs inline with the new indicators for them to flash so i have taped them up with black electrical tape to hide the light and tucked them under the seat for now.

gonna attack the rear subframe with the welder this weekend and angle it up about 20 degrees :D will post pics when im done.
