Title: Dropped on right side, now small oil leak and rattle
Post by: pizzle on July 30, 2012, 10:50:10 AM
Hey guys,

So I made the mistake of doing some pre-MSF training with my friend using my GS500 last week. He dropped it on the right side from 0 MPH and it seems like the crash-bar took all of the impact, but now leaks a bit of oil from somewhere that I can't tell. If I ride it every day, then there's no small oil stain on the ground, but there is if I don't ride it for a few days (as is the case on weekends). I've attached a picture below to show what my crash-bar looks like so you get a better idea of what the bike was sitting on when on its side. It also looks like the drop accelerated the head-gasket oozing?

There's also now a rattling sound between 5k and 6k RPMs. I've tightened the crash-bars more, but it doesn't seem like that help.

Rather than go through the bother of tearing down the entire bike, any suggestions as to where I should look first?

Thanks!

I see what looks like fresh oil residue around the valve cover, and spark plugs....but other than that the pic doesn't help much.

1. Is the exhaust still attached well?
2. Do you feel any extra vibration in the bars?
3. Have you checked the valves?
4. Sometimes my headlight rattles a bit
5. Check under both side covers, see if there is a trail of oil. I have a bad gasket on one side and when hot it doesnt leak, but it does if it sits.
