I noticed recently that once my bike is hot it almost acts as-if my choke is on a tad bit, when revving down it is slower than when cold (this was like this before my new pipe) i was hoping re-jetting would fix this, but i was curious if this is normal or not. on a side note, my idle sits between 1400-1800, shouldn't it be a bit closer to about 1250?
another side note, when it is warming up and backfires the RPM's dip to about 800, I'm also hoping this is fixed with rejet (well the backfiring part) any thoughts?
have you tried adjusting the idle screw once it's warmed up?
Not sure what causes it. But mine has started to idle kinda high after it's hot. If I idle it down, it is too low when cold..
My GS was doing this a little while ago, and once she got good and warmed up, she'd idle at around 1500 to 1800 rpm, too high!
Warm up your bike (not hot!) and re-adjust your idle screw until it sits around 1500 or lower, whatever is smooth for the engine. This fixed the problem for me, and now she runs much better in traffic, dropping rpm down to idle when I stop and not hanging high.
I had this problem for a while, until I did the following.
1. Get the bike nice and warmed up (I mean like a 30 min ride, not going super easy)
2. Let the bike idle and slowly turn the mixture screw on one carb at a time out by 1/4 turn every 30 seconds
3. When the RPMs stop going up with a 1/4 turn, turn it back in 1/4.
4. Adjust the idle screw down to 1250 between each adjustment of the mixture screws.
You will need to choke it to start the bike, but this is normal. Use the choke to maintain a good idle until warm and then turn it off. You might have to ride for a couple mins before turning the choke off completely.

so turn them until the idle is really high then back them off again?
The idle won't change that much with each 1/4 to half turn. You just turn them out slowly until it stops making the idle go any faster, and then back in 1/4. Remember to wait after each adjustment, it takes a few seconds to take effect. You can, and probably should, turn the idle back down using the idle screw (the big one in the middle) after each adjustment.
Our GS500 was similar. Seemed like I was always fiddling with the idle adjust to get it just right.
