Title: going to start a build thread
Post by: knowles on August 04, 2012, 11:48:58 AM
I know this most likely not going to happen but i thought i would try before i try to make one or have one made. Its the piece that the fairing bracket bolts into to hold the main fairing (one that has the headlight on a F model) to the steering tube. would like one if someone had a frame laying around or it they have made their F into a E. send me a message and we can go over price.

It's the piece that you bolt the fairing bracket into. It's a little piece of flat steel that is bent in a U shape welded to the frame and has two holes in it that the bolts go into to hold the fairing bracket on the bike.

As far I know, you cannot buy that piece because it is welded to the frame. When I was going to convert my 95 E to an 04+ F I bought all the fairing brackets I could but could not but that one. I was just going to get a piece of steel flat bar, pre-drill it for the fairing stay and weld it to the fork tube.

thats what i was going to do, I have access to a welder i was jsut going to see if i could find someone to cut the piece off a frame they didnt want or cut it off a frame that they made into a E. like i said didnt think it will happen but thought i would try before i get into making one or having one made.

When I was going to do mine I found pics of frames on ebay and used them for guides to see the placement of the bar. You can get a piece of flat bar anywhere including Lowes, Home Depot, TSC, Fastenal, ECT

you said that you welded yours on, right. i'm guessing because your only welding a little bit that you didnt have to worry about it warping the tube?

Good MIG low amp/low heat tack welds

Just like welding body panels on a car

I don't suppose you want to measure how far down that is from the steering lock. i dont suppose i could use a wire feed welder could i? oddly enough my welding class doesnt start till end of the month. is that hole with the scratch above it on the thick part of the outside of the frame one of the holes for the fairings? how far down do the fairings start on the frame (under the gas tank thick part of the frame)

#5226

I have photos in detail of all brackets as the fairings were removed from the donor bike.

I still have the donor frame for a while. I will measure each hole and bolt location so you can drill and tap everything in the correct place.

PS: No can do on using a grinder to remove the bracket. If bracket saved - steering stem damaged. To save steering stem, bracket would be hacked. Best to make your own unless someone has a frame that can be sacrificed. I can do detailed photo with measurements and rulers in the shots. I'd need a place to send EXTREMELY HIGH RESOLUTION pictures so you can blow them  up huge and even take extra dimensions from the pictures. Like 5472x3468 pixels.

can this also be moved to the general threads or the projects/ builds. i"ll put some pics up monday when im off. might just have the headlight faring on until class starts. does anyone know if a wire feed welder would work or is MIG the only way to go.

With TIG or stick I would Ben worried of burning through the tube. I would use MIG (not flux core) and dial the amps down a bit
