I seem to remember reading that he sold his GS to a fellow board member, which could be a reason that he isn't appearing with the same frequency as before.

Dare we ask what will happen to Pablo if he sells his GS and acquires a shiny new Triumph?

Title: he's still around....
Post by: richard on December 21, 2003, 09:40:13 PM
Kerry is still around.  Yes, he did have two GS's, until he sold one to me.  His internet connection at home is on the fritz today and yesterday (partly my fault, I'm afraid, he shares a connection wirelessly with me), or he would probably have answered by now... he monitors things pretty close, I believe, and I know he's still riding, despite cold weather.

I also want to mention that as cool as he is on the board, he's cooler in person... He has helped me with many things, and not just motorcycle.  Thanks, Kerry, for everything.

I'm still here, been checking in every day to read the posts.  Guess I just haven't had a lot to say lately.

Well I might mention a couple things I don't think I have mentioned lately.  My 97 GS500E that was totalled last July has been finally resolved.  I got a nice settlement from my insuramce company totalling it out and then bought it back as salvage for $100 salvage price.  I reinstalled the $250 worth of new parts I bought after the accident and put on a Plexi 2 fairing that I already had.  The bike is almost as good as it was before the accident except for a tiny dent in the gas tank and a few small scratches in the left side panel.  Best deal I ever got on a bike.

Well that was around the first of November and I immediately called the state police inspection station to get it inspected to take it out of salvage and put it back in service.  The first date I could get was Dec 2 and I crossed my fingers and waited thru all the mild November weather we had here in NE OH.  Yep, you guessed it, the weather turned on Dec 1 and Dec 2 was the coldest day we had since last March.

It was around 32F as I rode the 40 miles to the inspection station with a few light snow flurries in the air.  It peaked about 35F while I was there and then dropped below freezing late in the afternoon as I rode home.  Nearing home I crested a hill about 45 mph to see a sheet of ice about 6-8' wide across the road just ahead of me.  Talk about steady as she goes as I glided across it safely and arrived home intact.  Got the plates and insurance the next day and the 97 GS is finally officially back in service.

In the meantime, the 02 GS500 I bought in Sept has accumulated another 4000 miles.  It runs so much better cold than the 97 with the new carbs.  I'm gonna have to finally do a rejetting job on the 97 since it has replaced the old Hondamatic as my winter bike.

Well, just a few words about tires.  The 97 needed a new front tire and I found a BT010 to replace the Z4 front.  I previously replaced a damaged rear Z2 with a AV36.   So now I have a soft sport type BT010 on the front with a Avon AV36 harder sport touring type on the back.  Boy does that thing grip and turn in nice.  Haven't had a chance to try it with the temp above about 45F yet and mostly in the 30's, but that thing is gonna be fun to play with when the weather gets a bit warmer in a few months.

The bias ply tires on the almost new 02 GS will be replaced come spring.  It already has the Progressive springs.  Right now I'm thinking about using the new Avon AV45/46 ST tires on the 02 for travelling to the mountains and putting stickier ones on the old 97 to play with closer to home.  Guess that's all that's new with me.

Jack always seems to pop up. I like Jack, he has a very mature outlook on things...and he was the first person to get a custom title

Kerry still lives!

I haven't been on for a week.  Apologies to anyone trying to find me.  I've been fairly busy at work lately, and trying to cut back on the work time spent on the board.  Which leaves my "spare time" ... which I haven't had much of lately.

Most recent case in point: I picked up my new Dell computer (!!) on Saturday at the UPS place ... right AFTER my wife talked me into buying a pair of PUPPIES at PetSmart.  (We had our 12-year-old Lab put down on 1 Dec.)   So much for getting my new computer set up; it's been nothing but feed, clean, play with pups, clean, take brief nap, clean, give pups a bath, clean, REPEAT.  Luckily my wife has done MOST of the cleaning, but I'm usually involved in one way or another.

And then my brother-in-law rolled in last night for the holidays, so there will be even LESS time to spend online.  Sigh.  Maybe if I chloroform everyone for 8 or 10 hours I could get caught up on the past week's messages....

But don't hold your breath!

PS - I have been monitoring my email for Avatar requests, but I haven't received any in the past week.

For all you dog lovers out there, here are the two new terrors at our house.  They're just over 3 months old, so we've gone through a LOT of paper towels and plastic shopping bags in a week.  They're getting better, though.

Nope, they're apparently a mix of several breeds.  Notably Boxer, Pit Bull and maybe some German Shepherd.  They're sure feisty when they play together.  I think it's going to be a whole different experience than with our Labs.

Here's hoping!

Kerry, from my years at animal care and regulation  (county dog pound) those look like standard run of the mill shep X  Or shepard Mix if you will,   The only way to tell really what the Mixes are is to Know the Bloodline(mom and dad) or wait untill they grow and finnalize.   about the only thing you can guess really close is the size they are going to get. Puppies grow into thier paws, Not long after they are born, the paws grow quickly in relation to their bodies then stop, their bodies then grow over time to match their paws.    they are cute though, enjoy.

Kerry still lives!
/quote

I did several searches trying to find the answer to the question "Where's Kerry?" on my own since it would appear that his last post to GSTwins was on June 10th 2012.

Although I have not yet exchanged posts with him, I wanted to thank him for his help on something that he would not have been aware of!
Back when I first acquired my 2007 GS500F from my son (He's still an active member here AFAIK. If/when he chooses to acknowledge my presence is HIS call! :-)  The bike had +/- 20K miles and there were a few routine maintenance issues that needed to be addressed. One of it's previous owners had installed (MIG welded on) some sort of "universal fit" automotive muffler. The last owner before my son claimed the jetting had been changed (Clearly he had never removed the float covers, much less changed the jets)

In light of that, I wanted to verify that the valve clearances were correct, or at least not too *tight*.

A few points on the valve check were not as clear to me as I would have liked. (bottom line? Too simple. I was "over-thinking" it.) It occurred to me to do a search of Youtube. Boy, we sure didn't have that resource "back in the day" when I rebuilt the engine in my first "honest to goodness" road-going motorcycle, a 1969 Honda DOHC CB450!

It was there that  I found a DIY video posted by Kerry on checking the valve clearances....I found the video most helpful and  really enjoyed his "down home" laid back approach to "wrenching" (meant in the most possible complimentary way!)

I especially enjoyed the "human-ness" aspect where he patiently tried multiple times to get the shim removal tool to work....PRICELESS! At that point I decided to wait until the winter season to swap shims on one of the exhaust valves that is ever so slightly out of spec to the loose side.

So, THANKS KERRY!

I hope whatever is occupying your time these days is as gratifying to you as being on here helping folks like me who are new to this particular bike! "The internet never forgets"...which can be good and bad....in your case it looks to me like it's ALL good!

I've been lurking on this board since February of this year. I posted this past weekend for the first time when I had a problem with the Starter Motor Clutch. Source of problem was the *barely* finger-tight crankshaft end bolt, which apparently is not a rare occurrence? Fortunately I wasn't a long way from home. Had I attempted to "bump start" the bike and ride it any distance, it's seems pretty obvious  a fair amount of damage could be done. ($CHA-CHING$)

So, I count myself lucky on that one, and I got some good input from several people here on the "do's and don'ts" on doing the fix.

The GS 500 really is a fine motorcycle in all respects and an absolute joy to ride! I've owned a number of bikes over the past 42 years. Some were either bigger, or badder, or both. It's been a very long time since I have felt I had to "prove" anything to anyone concerning my choice of rides....this bike *works for me* and is light and economical to boot! Even a short trip up to the store is *FUN* with the only downside being that it doesn't last long enough!

Anyway, I hope someone will come along and let me know where Kerry is these days? Thanks!

Everyone's life and interests change from time to time. I have abandoned interests, message boards, and other hobbies sometimes with little to no warning.

Iirc, he was taking an epic trip to Ohio and KY in September and was busy with his job in SLC Utah.

And yes, Kerry's posts have saved my rear several times including the valve adjustment one.

Hi,
I had watched Kerry's valve adjustment video in the past, but now when I try to view it on youtube it says that the video is private.

Was this done for a reason?  Is there another way to access the video?

Thanks
