Title: Tombs 87 Honda Super Magna
Post by: Tombstones81 on August 07, 2012, 07:15:28 PM
Well, since everyone enjoyed my GS500 build, I was asked to make another for this bike. (hope yall dont mind since its not a GS)

1987 Honda VF700C Magna (Super Magna)
20K miles

Even trade for my GS and extra motor.

Just acquired it last night.

Basic maintenance was a MESS!!!!!!

Oil was WAYYYYYY overfilled.
Everything visually is/was either sun faded and/or Filthy!
As well as ALOT of metal cleaning to do as there is alot of rust spots, dullness, etc etc (nothing that elbow grease cant fix)
Brake and cable fluid was HORRIBLEEEEEEE! (coffee color and just NASTY goop all in the bottom of the resi)

But mechanically its Great, I can, will, and have already started taking care of the minor details.

What am I going to add or change to it tho?
At the moment, not much to start with as I want the metal to be shiny as hell and Spotless first!
First few tho, Progressive fork springs, Updated better headlight, and LED strips.
After that, who knows.
I WAS going to get forward controls ($300!!) but im comfortable with the mid controls and the front highway pegs atm.

Handlebars..... going to give it more time and see if I like these, or else go with drag style bars.

Today?
After I got back from running to the store and getting insurance.
Changed the oil to my old trusty Castrol 10W40 Synthetic racing oil.
Accidentally dripped lubricant spray on the controls that were almost White with sun fading and dirt.
Wiped it off and the spot went back to black!
So the controls and anything else plastic and black I just sprayed to hell with it and cleaned it off.
Came out VERY nice and its all back to black now.
Flushed out the brake and clutch fluid. (NASTY!!!!!) and MUCHHHHH smoother now!!!
Then I wanted to see how well the paint looked after 2 coats of wax.
Came out looking GREAT!!!!!
No need to repaint it At All! (friend has a compressor and I was planning on doing it properly but no point now)

Now the pics!

The side black box cover was more of a Grey then black.
After cleaning, now it looks Brand New!

Look at how Nasty the controls look and the handlebar mount as well as around the gauges.
After the clean up, looks Almost brand new!!

How faded the paint looks in the next 2 pics.

and here are the minor 3 pics I took after the non metal clean up and 2 coats of wax on the red.
I'll get more detailed pics tomorrow as im in for the night.

HUGEEEE difference!!

Enjoy!

Thats it for today.
I'll take more detailed pics tomorrow and then pics of how far I get with scrubbing and polishing the metal.

Thanks guys!

and just wait until the metal is all shined up Coda! hahahaha

Yeah I am actually half and half on sport bikes and cruisers.

I need both.

The GS tho, love the hell out of it but I simply outgrew it.
Not to mention I looked WAY too big for it anyways, well and I was too big as well because it wasnt always a very comfy ride.

niiiiiice..  :bstar:

i didnt read the title properly though .. and was just taking a deep breath to rant about how the hell would anyone want to restore a Magna (mitsubishi car) !!!! .... which i seem to have developed a pathological hatred of ... I've owned 2 .... 'fool me twice shame on me!'

i would happily ride along with .. and should the opportunity ever arise $ wise , own this kinda bike as an addition to the 'stable'... a lot of cruisers even though they are marketed as 'individual styling' .. are just too .... bland....

its like harleys ... most of them i dont mind and would test ride but not own... but the new '48' i'm quite taken with ..

i reckon you gonna need a colour matched helmet (if subscribe to helmets anyway) though.  O0

ahh, what, did you think it was a regular Magna? noooo ty!

eh as I said, im half and half between sport bikes and cruisers.

All depends how I feel like riding.

I honestly need both types of bikes, but not enough $$ for both yet.

and my helmet already matches it enough :)  (yes I wear one as I Like me brains! hahaha)

Update!
sorry, forgot as I just posted a reply ><

started cleaning up the metal.

Right side cover.
Only did the top half with 320 grit wet sanding when I took the pic.

and heres after I hit it with 600 after and then 1500 (only size paper I have left)
and a lil polishing.
still doesnt look as good as it can tho. (was only a test portion)

heres how good the controls came out vs the previous pic above at how dirty and white they were.

after
(http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc6/190141_4310217714853_2146442078_n.jpg)

Left fork minor scrub job and polish.
Right fork untouched.
BIGGGG difference in person, cant tell As much in the photo.

kk break times over!!!

and I think im only going to do Minor cleanup and polish on the metal for now.
as doing it by hand with sandpaper (too much to use steel wool) would just take WAYYY too long and use up WAYYY too much paper!
So I am going to wait until I buy some sanding Power tools and get it done Right and Quicker.

Tomb! glad you finished cleaning up my bike for me! Go on ahead and drive it down here, would ya? thanks.

ha!

1. that looks awesome
2. it looks like a pretty small bike, what's the seat height? 26-27"?

it really looks like its got a comfy riding position, drag bars may stretch you out way more than you'd like. just a thought!

hahahaha sure thing!

thanks!

its actually in No way small!
I forget the length of the trailer we used, but for my GS, the holder for the front tire was quite a ways back and still had alot of room when the back was up.

This sucker!
Had to move the front tire holder (whatever its called) All the way to the front and just Barely cleared the gate.

It looks small because im 6ft2 and 240 pnds.

and yes it does sit quite low, not sure Exactly how low tho.

Longggg ride today.
Absolutely Love it!!!
and yes VERY comfy!!!

Dunno yet.

Yeah there is the obvious tho...
More power, more comfort etc etc
Its heavier, but this bikes only 500 pounds, so I can still toss it around it seems.

But as far as handling and turning goes... dunno yet.

The only twisties after bike night last night we went through, I was stuck behind someone with a passenger >< (HATE that!!)
So they were slowing down quite a bit on the turns and I couldnt really push the bike to see how she handles.

These are pretty agile cruisers if i'm not mistaken, looks great!
It's got quite the oil cooler on it compared to the GS
Title: Re: Tombs 87 Honda Super Magna
Post by: bombsquad83 on August 09, 2012, 02:03:43 PM
It's liquid cooled is it not?
Title: Re: Tombs 87 Honda Super Magna
Post by: iclrag on August 09, 2012, 03:06:10 PM
Isn't oil considered liquid cooled? or am i mistaken
Title: Re: Tombs 87 Honda Super Magna
Post by: bombsquad83 on August 09, 2012, 03:23:38 PM
Liquid cooled means it's cooled by coolant (antifreeze) and a radiator.  Oil cooled is the same as air cooled.  Whether or not there is an oil cooler mounted outside the engine, there is nothing but oil and the outside air (no coolant) cooling the engine.
Title: Re: Tombs 87 Honda Super Magna
Post by: Tombstones81 on August 09, 2012, 03:37:16 PM
Yes it is Liquid Cooled.

Radiator out front and a reservoir behind the side right panel.

(edit)
and thats quite the engine (4cyl) to be air cooled, Too much engine. haha

update tho.
found some sanding adapters at Ace Hardware for my Oscillating tool!

So next pay I will be grabbing it and getting the major surfaces shined up.

Harder to reach spots, I'll wait until I have a dremel tool with little sanding adapters for tight areas.

ahh, thanks! i always get that mixed up! in my mind it's "well oil is a liquid, right?"

Update...... bad one ><

Been off the bike for a few days now >< (since Fri I think)

Found one small exhaust leak, went to prepare to fill it and found a pretty large crack.
Filled those in, next day I started the bike up to make sure they were sealed until I got them welded... found Another hole ><

So, I decided just to take the suckers off for welding right then and there.

Day later and ALOT of hell...... they are Garbage.
Rusted and rotted to Hell, the pipes between the mufflers and header pipes. (header pipes come off)

So, im on the Super Magna forums right now trying to put together another exhaust. (complete one is just TOO expensive) $500+ used! $850 for aftermarket (only found ONE!)

Going to be using my mufflers and just having the pipes after the mufflers welded onto mine.

Had the left ones covered, and just now got an offer on what I hope is the right side (waiting for confirmation)
Hopefully they are the left ones and the mufflers look to be in better condition then mine and I wont be cutting the pipes off of them.

Just piecing together stock pipes.

As even with the baffles out, it just doesnt sound right. (so Everyone says on the SM forum)
As this is a 4cyl motor in it, Not a V twin.

GREAT news tho!

Just got off the phone with a member that is going to sell me the complete left half of the mufflers and pipes. (uncut)
which actually look better then mine!

Just need to have my welder fix this hole up.
Shouldnt be a problem at all for him either!

Right side, another member is cutting the piping off at the mufflers and those will be welded onto my current ones.

then I should be all good!!

(edit)
just got an email from the right side seller.
Isnt going to be cutting off the mufflers now and just sending them complete so its easier on my welder.
if they even need to be cut off, Might even be in better condition then my current ones.

Also selling me a piece of pipe to weld and fix up that hole.
along with the 88 stock tank decals.
Its black and says Magna.
vs
the 87 that is just plain UGLY, which is a single wing that says Honda in it.

Def. getting hooked up and Really appreciate it!

Update!  :thumb:

Since im stuck waiting until Weds & Thurs for the exhaust parts, might as well clean up the metal and everything else until then.

Sanded down the lower fork tubes the other day, came out pretty nice!
Took the tank off, cleaned up under there as it was quite dirty, and waxed the frame for extra protection.
As well as scrub and wax rear lower areas of the frame as well.

This morning, went up to Harbor freight and got some buffing pads for my drill and compound.
As well as mothers polish yesterday.

Started out on the right side cover that I sanded before.
Polished to a mirror shine!!

After buffing but before polishing.

Done for the day!!!

UGH!
So beat, filthy, sweaty, & sore!
Cant wait to just relax in the tub for awhile!

Left cover all shined up!

Might go over it again with 1500 and 2000 grit, buff and polish it again for good measure.

Before.

Also got the rear headers back in with fresh gaskets.

UGH Im never taking those off again!
Such a pain getting the bolts back in from like NO room!!!

(edit)
and next, tomorrow or Monday.
Take off the pegs and do the same to those.
Mostly because of the rust.

Small update.

Havnt had time to do much of pretty much Anything.
A few Minor things is all.

Buffed and Polished the rear rim and levers.
and added stock 88 decals to the tank vs the ugly honda wing 87 ones.

Got my exhaust parts in yesterday, was Very freakin happy....... until I took them down to the welder....
Said he cant get to them until late Sat or Sun.........
Pretty ticked off at that as if he woulda let me know that when I initially asked, I could of called some shops for quotes and made an app before the parts even got here!!!!

So now im stuck again! ><

Heres how shes sittin right now.
Exhaust is off and side covers, along with a few things under the seat as I need them off to get the exhaust back on when its done.

You can tell someone is taking care of this beast now! She's really starting to shine nice. Got to show my friend this thread. He just picked up an old '82 yama, and needs to start spit shinning

Exhaust was done today!

Talk about a pain in the @$$ to put back on alone!
Never wanna do that unless its a brand spankin new exhaust!

Just 2 minor leaks now.
Middle connecting pipes is the biggest one but not much at all.
Probably just going to have him weld the suckers together while its on the bike if he can.

Other one is the left front header pipe where it goes into the rear pipes.
Nothing major there and its very small, just need to replace the gasket in there.
Not even sure if there was one as the pipe went in WAYYY too easily compared to the right side.
I'll get some more on Weds.

Took it for a ride around the block, rode Great!
Was about to go wash up and get ready for an actual ride.
Did the usual checks.... brake lights were Staying on.
oye was I flaming mad! (always One more problem!)

Came in, posted for help on the SM forum but soon deleted it.
Googled the problem and it gave me some ideas.

Was the rear brake lever.
I guess from all the sanding and buffing, I must have bent the mechanism holder up a little bit that makes the rear brake light light up when you step on peddle.
Just bent it back down a little bit (its fine) and the light went out.

Just got back from a nice hour ride around.

Bikes runnin Great!

Also shifting ALOTTTTTTT more smoothly!!!
Guess that slave cylinder cleanup and fluid flushing did the job.

Now to relax a bit then head to bed to meet up for the usual large sunday group ride!

Will post some better then before pics when I get the chance.
I literally Just got done at 11pm, cleaned up and went for a ride at about 11:30 and just got back.

Still need to clean it all up again.

Update!

Finally got to take the beast on a LONG ride!
Usual Sunday group ride of 150 to 200 miles. (no highways!, all back and mostly twisty roads)

So now the review and comparison.

Performance wise..... it beats the GS500 completely in every way!

More power. (obviously)
Can handle twisties FARRRRRRRRR better then my GS!
and I mean FARRRR better!

One example: this 4 lane road that goes up a pretty nice size mountain. (twisty all the way down)
Going down on the GS, I could do Maybe 60 with quite a few pucker moments and maybe slide out, so I usually stayed at 50.

This time, I said the hell with it!
Time to see what shes made of! hahaha
When a car wasnt in front of me, 75 to 85 the whole way down and not a single pucker moment!!!
Loved it!!!

As for being nimble.
Isnt a whole lot difference.
Pretty much only in size.
GS dry weight is 440 pounds.
SM 529 pounds (wet)

Isnt a ton of difference there when it comes to comparing a sport bike with a cruiser.
As thats pretty light for a cruiser!

I've gone faster then my old GS in turns a few times and the tires stuck to the road like friggin Glue!

Happiest part of all!!!!
NO MORE SQUISHED BALLS!!!!!  :woohoo:  :woohoo:  :woohoo:

SM specs.
Manufacturer    Honda
Also called    Super Magna
Production    less than 20,000 total
Predecessor    V30
Class    Cruiser
Engine    699 cc 1987 / 748cc 1988
Top speed    125 mph
Power    88 PS @ 9000 rpm / 86 bph
Torque    6.6 kg-m /7000 rpm, 47.74 lb-ft
Transmission    6-speed, shaft drive
Suspension    39 mm non adjustable fork, dual coil over shocks
Brakes    Single disc front, drum rear
Tires    Front: 100/90-19 tubeless, Rear: 150/80-15 tubeless
Wheelbase    1660 mm / 65.35 inches
Dimensions    L 2385 mm / 94 inches
W 810 mm / 32 inches
H 1155 mm / 45.5 inches
Seat height    27.8 in (706 mm)
Weight    529 lb (240 kg) (wet)
Fuel capacity    13 L / 3.43 US gallons
Fuel consumption    30 to 45 mpg

Thats probably the only bad thing I can say about it.

the MPG isnt "too" bad but the gas tank only holds 3.43 gallons.
So I find myself filling up alot more.

Well theres my review.
Mentions anything I missed.

and No I am Not knocking the GS.
If I was, why would I still be on here?

Update  :D  :thumb:

Had a few exhaust leaks.

Rear side of the one header pipe that goes into the rear muffler pipes was missing the filler gasket, so it was leaking.
Got one out Perfectly from one of the old pipes and isnt leaking now.

Middle area of the cluster has a small leak between the teeth of the female pipe slot.
additional clamp took care of that.

The right top pipe that goes to the rear headers that he welded on was too far forward.
Had to heat and bent it back a bit and I cracked the weld a little bit on the bottom.
Got that fixed last night.

No more exhaust leaks and shes sounding and running Alot better!  :thumb:

All that is left during this season is to shine up the rest of the metal.

and heres some pics as shes sittin and runnin now  :thumb:

Well, since im on here I might as well update.

With......pretty much Nothing! hahahaha
(which is a GOOD thing!)

Last post was about the LEDs.... what a clusterfunk!!!!!!

Solder points after cutting the 5 meter strip were Garbage!!!

Long story short, total waste of Alot of time and not much money.

If I keep the bike, will either just string up the entire 5 meters in one Long go around the bike (can easily do it without looking like crap)
or have a friend do it for cheap.

atm im iffy about selling it.
Until recently I was hell bent on selling it and getting either a TL1000S or Superhawk.
But now, im not 100% sure I want to sell.

Im missing the ride of a sport bike Alot more then enjoying the cruiser style ride.

But I still enjoy the bike alot, so im a little conflicted.

After shining up a few main parts (no additional parts since my last posts)
I've just been riding!

Tires finally done for, so I ordered a set of Shinko 777's that will be here Monday.

Going to strip, sand, & polish the extra rear rim I have before they arrive tho.
get that sucker lookin like its chromed.
Also the smooth areas of the front rim and probably paint the rough areas that cant be shined up black like most do.

Other then that.
IF I decide to keep it.

Gonna need to check the valve clearance.
Then just clean it up even more over the winter.

Plans past that arent even a thought now tho (employment isnt... well just Isnt right now!) hahaha

PS.
Just because I dont own a GS anymore doesnt mean im not on here.
and I Still appreciate ALL the help I've gotten with my old GS!  :thumb:

I was in talks with a guy to trade my gs for his 01 FZ1, it apparently needed a little cosmetic work, but ran fine. Then? nothing. just disappears from the earth like "poof"

so now I just look at your post and hope for the future. that shaZam! always happens to me.

as for LEDs, its usually easier just to buy them in little segments, but, live and learn i suppose!

nah on the LEDs.
the 2 blue LED strips per package cost me $20 a pop (used 4 on the GS)
which are like I think only a yard long.

the 5 meter strip cost me only $31 shipped.

I just got unlucky and bought a bad strip.
As my friend got the same thing but from somewhere else and his have worked flawlessly.

and it would of been fine if we found the clips for them before all the hell and we could have avoided soldering all together.

Next time I'll just get the 5 meter strip from the ebay seller he did and use connectors instead.

If I bought individual strips for every spot I want covered on the SM..... Over $100 for the lights alone!
vs
$40 for the kit and connectors.

as far as the trade goes.
Honestly, I just got DAMM Lucky!!!!

If the guy was honest with what he told me.
(new rider and the bike was too much for him)
then he just didnt know what he had.

actually, either way, he didnt know what he had!

With a little more cleanup.
I know for sure I can get $3000 to $3500.

Invest $800 in a set of brand new pipes after that, around $4000.

thats IF I had/have the patience for the right buyer.

If I choose to, it would require alot of patience because these bikes are rare and someone who doesnt know of them would only go by the listed book value.
which is an utter joke! haha
$2000ish for a runner needing a GOOD cleaning etc etc
Up to $5000 for a Mint one with low miles.

Thanks!
But not Quite yet.

I havnt really taken the time to do much.
Other then polish up the side covers and fork tubes.
(which actually still need to be fully removed and Completely done)

and cleaned it up a lil bit (washed & waxed)

Also found a stock rear seat for it at the local salvage yard for only $75 (can ebay it for $150+ if I wanted to)
They didnt even know they had it, was in the very bottom of the giant box they had.
Was the last one the guy grabbed out of the box & I almost fell over.

Well.
Today I stopped for a few things.
Fluids to change the oil.
Waterproof cigg lighter adapter (whatever the heck the technical term is)
and some Chrome outline (whatever its called that people put around their car door trim)
sorry, its been a LONGGGG day and my brains on fumes!

Should look pretty nice with chrome outline around at least the front fender and tank.

and it will look ALOT better once I strip... UGHHHH!!! forgot the aircraft stripper!!!!!
Once I strip, sand, & polish the rear and front rims and then mount new tires.

and do the same to the head covers.

then clean up the misc minor little surface rust spots like around the front peg brackets etc etc...

(edit)
here is basically how nice I want mine to get.

http://www.supermagna.com/owners_pics/mark_opperman.htm

Lower fairings I dont have any probably wont ever as they are EXPENSIVE for such small pieces!
Not going with that typical headlight that everyone else goes with (Wayyyyyyy too big looking for the style of the bike)
cant really tell in those pics

but pretty much all that to a T except those above.

As far as cleaned up is concerned, the plate relocation, and the clear blinker covers.

Front rim is where I will be painting mine black (those are rough areas that cannot be smoothed out)
Polishing up the rest.

Started buffing up the rims yesterday in preparation for new tires.

Tires mounted last night as I ran out of polishing time.

still in the middle of it, so heres the pics so far.

and DONE for the day!
UGH much more then expected.

didnt finish.

Updated above photo descriptions tho.

Had the new tires mounted last night.

Day consisted of....

Running around for a new bolt, shaft oil, & fresh buffing pads.

Buffing rear right side rim a 2nd time with better results.
Buffing and polishing the chrome brake drum when it arrived.
Painted the middle of the front rotor black (still drying & tape covered, pic tomorrow)
Drained the drive shaft oil (cant refill until rims are on to level the bike out to measure the oil level)
Sanded down the front rim, buffed, & polished. (2nd buff job tomorrow)
Then painted the rough (unable to get smooth) areas of the front rim black.
Only got half of it done and need to let it dry now.

Front rim buffed.

front rim polished (looks better in person but hopefully even better after a 2nd buff job)

and the right side (rough areas) painted black.
Paint is still wet.

Hopefully im all finished tomorrow

Tnx

and I was so surprised the spokes came out shiny because one SM member said if I wanted to get them to a mirror shine.
that I would have to grind them down as there as ridges going side to side all the down the now shined up part.
I actually think if I had more time, I could get them to a mirror shine.
but F that as the next 3 days (from today on) are going to be allll sun and 45!
NEEEEEED TOOOOO RIDEEEEEE!!!!!

Well, got even more work to do today last night.
Checked my email, got the tracking for my progressive springs.
Will be here today as they shipped from a local town close by.

Now I gotta go buy some more 15w fork oil (only 15% left in the one I used on my GS)
Take the forks off and leave them drain while I rebuff and then paint the other side of the front rim and let it dry.
Install the springs and new oil after putting the forks back on.
Get the front rim on.
then the rear after lubing up the gears.
Fill the drive shaft with fresh oil finally.

and I think be good t go  :thumb:

Hahahaha thanks, I think.

Well, just waiting on the other side of the front rim to finish drying enough to mount it on.
and the forks to fully drain,w hich they probably already are now.

right side I painted last night. (dried)

forks draining along with the old and new springs there.

and a few as shes sitting now pics.

kk time to go finish the forks up and reinstall them.
front rim should be dry enough by then.
its dry enough now but still Slightly smudges if touched, but the paint doesnt come off on my finger.
So I simply put a fan on it until im ready to toss it on.

Done for the day (few hrs ago)

she is done but not Finished....
everything back on and in working order and seems great.

Except the front brakes are grinding now.
Going to just lube the caliper and bleed the lines tomorrow.
should be good then.

Heres the 3 only pics I have taken so far.

Bikes still dirty from putting things back on with Filthy hands.
Will clean it all up and take more pics tomorrow if I fix that brake grinding and get ready to ride.

Indeed.
Im 6ft2 & 250 pnds (for now)
so im not a small guy and I also sit as far back as I can as its comfortable for me on this bike.

So the seam has been stretching there.
Pretty moronic place to put a seam as well!!!
Yeah right where alot of body weight is being planted if the rider isnt sitting far forward.

actually.....  thanks for makin me think about that.

friend just got a bike hes workin on and needs to redo his seat.
asked me for fabric because I still have a TONNNNN left from redoing my old GS's.

Think I might just redo mine when I help him redo his, if the seams are merely for leather cosmetic design and if its just one big thing of foam underneath.

Yeah its actually Very common to paint those areas black on these bikes.

Well, no pics yet.
Caliper is pretty much shot.
Grabbed an alternative from the salvage yard which is soaking in scalding hot water atm.
gonna clean and lube it all up.
hopefully it doesnt give me problems.

also bought a stock caliper for only $30 off ebay and $30 for a rebuild kit that I should have gotten awhile ago lol.

So the stock one will be fully cleaned and rebuild when it gets ehre.

kk back to workin

(edit)
pretty much screwed til the other caliper comes in a week+
one fromt he salvage yard didnt pan out ><

No bike work related updates.
Even if all the parts were here, im too sick to do jack squat..... ><

Caliper rebuild kit arrives.
Still waiting on the black caliper I bought off ebay and rebuild that vs my grey one.

Also got a few more goodies otw  :thumb:  :thumb:  :woohoo:
headlight from the salvage yard I took the caliper back to for store credit (they can order new)
http://wanaryd.com/drag-specialties-diamond-style-bottom-mount-53-4-headlight-assemblies-head-lt.5-3-4clr-w-visr-20-0444.html
and the bracket to install it.

New (used) rear shocks.
Only like 3 or 4 known direct or almost direct shock swaps for the SM. (other then brand new)
These were the only ones that added height to the rear and better handling in the twisties.
all the others lowered the rear end and were $100+ used.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/330845873106?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

Hopefully the salvage yard can order me these handlebars as I have $50 left in store credit.
http://www.meancycles.com/store/parts/view.cfm?partID=219013

Rear seat refab didnt go so well to say the least....
passenger seat came out fine.
Riders seat tho, was modified by one of the PO's.
Had an added top layer of softer foam added to it.
So the spray adhesive I used the other 2 times that worked Great.... ruined it.
Last bit of fabric I had and the glue made it INSTANTLY adhere to the foam.
vs stock foam, I got like 10 minutes to work with it.

So I took it to an upholstery place.
$125 to do another covering and repair or replace the top layer of foam.
Went with a VERYYY nice looking and feeling Red leather to match the bike.
If its gonna be too much red, I dont care as the seat is going to look friggin BAS@$$!!!!

Lets see..... UGH stupid sick brain! WORK!!!!

SHOULD be getting a nice chunk of change today (weds) or tomorrow.
going to use that and buy the last brand new slash cut exhaust the seller and fellow SM rider has left.
(another BAD@$$ looking item!)

and last but Most of all!!!

$32 shipped for each auction!
Was DAMMMMMMMMM lucky to come across that!!!!
when I search for SM stuff, instead of being specific.
I just search every 1 or 2 days and click to show the newly listed items first. (which usually arent many)
which is why I got so lucky and nabbed these before anyone else, as they must have JUST been put on recently.

why was I so lucky?
look at these 2 listings prices....
the single front cowl piece... that price is like the BARE minimum I usually see.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/87-Honda-VF700-VF-700-C-Super-Magna-lower-bottom-fairing-cowl-/260912681819?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3cbf9b935b&vxp=mtr

and $300 for a set in good condition..... oye!
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1987-1988-87-88-VF700-VF750-HONDA-SUPER-MAGNA-UNDER-LOWER-COWL-FAIRING-COMPLETE-/261133931186?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3ccccb92b2&vxp=mtr

yes those prices are common.

Just going to have a look over the front piece and see if it needs attention.
then just paint them black with the usual 2K clear that I just ordered a can of after the auction.

Then decide if I wanna go Red or Black professionally done when I have the bike repainted (staying with red overall)

the lower fairings dont look like much, but they do add alot more look to the bike then ya think. (pic below)

and even more goodies otw! hahaha

Santa Tombs is spoiling the bike!  :thumb:

Stopped up the salvage yard even tho I knew the headlight wasnt in yet.
Had $50 left in store credit and wanted to see if they can order me the handlebars I want that I have bookmarked online.
nope....

So, I ordered a set of chrome handlebar switch housings.
Also needed to pick up header pipe gaskets for when the new exhaust comes.

Got home and ordered the handlebars  :thumb:
http://www.meancycles.com/store/parts/view.cfm?partID=219013

and that is I T !!!!

Other then a new paint job and a rear seat backrest with luggage rack if im going to travel in the summer. (both not Needed and not anytime soon)
Then all the Needed and Wanted swaps/upgrades are Done! :)

Going to be taking the bike up to a friends garage so I can have an extra hand doing the work, and so im not out in the cold getting sick again!
(feelin Much better today!)

First steps.
Clean the new brake caliper I got the other day. (looks GREAT, just normal road wear & dust on it)
If it doesnt need the new washers and such from the rebuild kit, going to just keep that on the side.
Brake pads are still 50%++ too on them.

Once that issue is all taken care of.
Clean it all up just so I can take a complete Before pic (before all the part installations)

Ride it to friends.

Then begins the work!
(in order needed to be done)
Drain the coolant & remove the radiator (its in the way & one maintenance I forgot about til yesterday) (and fill it with Engine Ice when all done)
Remove everything to get to the valve covers & carbs.
Remove carbs.
Remove valve covers.
Check and correct the valve clearance.
Remove old exhaust.

and then while waiting on the new exhaust to arrive (yes I plan to get prior work done before they even get here)
Polish up the valve covers like I've done to the side covers and rims.
Metal Carb caps need to be sanded down and painted (too pitted with rust spots to shine up)
Minor carb cleaning (they are acting GREAT and were just Fully rebuilt professionally early last year)

Then toss it all together to the point where I can freely sync the carbs when the new exhaust is installed.
(wait on exhaust)
Install new exhaust.
Sync the carbs.

Then I do the rest of whats needed to be installed.

Who knows, the sooner I get the bike up there, the more work I can get done before having to install the new exhaust and sync the carbs.

But those are the main steps I need to take :)

Lots of work headed my way :)

Hopefully will remember to take lots of pics, before, during, and after.  :thumb:

HELL YEAH!!!!

Woke up, suns out and its almost 40 out.

Went out.
Jacked the front end up again.
Took the front rim off & the rotor.
Loosened up the forks and fender.

Made SURE everything was 100% even and straight.
Torqued down the forks and then the fender.
Followed by the rotor and then the front rim.

Put the new caliper on after I cleaned it up.
Hand tight, brakes fully out, spun the rim... no grinding :D
Torqued it down, still no grinding :D

Let the bike down off the jack.
Bled the brakes.
Hit the lever until there was nice pressure.

Started her up and rode up and down the long driveway a few times playing with the front brake as much as I can....

NO GRINDING!!!! <3 :) :) :) :)

Shes good to go and be taken to my friends garage now.....
Soon as my damm seat is done!
or else I would of went riding today!!!

Also tossed the Honda Nighthawk rear shocks I got on.
WOW!
Raised the rear end ""Visually"" quite a bit.
Was told it only raised half an inch & gives better handling.

and now shes back in the shed until my seat is done.
Then hopefully get at least One nice enough day to enjoy what I've done so far with a ride.

Then head up to my friends garage with it once all the parts come.

Tnx.

No pics yet until the seat is done.
or else I would have cleaned it up and taken one today.

When the seat is done, I'll clean it up and take a bunch of how it looks after the work I've done so far.

Then the process of the crapton of items that still need to arrive and then be put on.

Got bored.... hahaha

Cleaned up the metal parts I made a mess of putting back on.
Used my cleaner/polisher on the painted parts followed by some turtle wax I just picked up.
Also picked up a new kind of metal cleaner/polish, shaZam! works the best out of the 2 other kinds I've used.

New rear shocks are on as well.

its the flash on the fender near the fork.

Some of the best metal/chrome polish I have found is called Semi Chrome.. Google it, a lot of guys will use it to seal aluminum throttle bodies etc. Its from Germany I believe (I have a few tubes of it, but cant recall).

Great stuff.

Yeah that flash makes the front fender look dented scratched. Also that front tire looks incredibly worn? Be careful on that if so.
Title: Re: Tombs 87 Honda Super Magna
Post by: Tombstones81 on December 24, 2012, 04:56:29 PM
Thanks.

and nah, both tires are brand spankin new.

middle is just mostly filled with mud from the yard.
the sidewalls look nasty from the metal polish as I was going around the rim edge.

Don't repaint that bike.  It looks great as is after all the clean up work, and it's worth more with the original paint.
Title: Re: Tombs 87 Honda Super Magna
Post by: Tombstones81 on December 27, 2012, 12:51:49 PM
Almost certain it isnt the original paint.
or at least all of it isnt.

the stock decals are gone, not sure if they are over or under the clearcoat.

When I got it, there was quite a bit of red overspray around the gas tank.
mostly in the front.

There is orange peel on the top of the tank.
Quite a bit of it if you look up close.
Never "seen" what orange peel looked like until a friend redid his tank and showed me.
I always thought the paint actually peeled up a bit, not bubbled up.

Yes, I did my old GS THAT damm good with rattle cans and my first time not to know what orange peel looked like   :thumb:

But yea, im leaving it as it is for at least awhile.
I've spent enough funds on the bike already.

and update :(

Those in the north east know of the snow we got :(
Also the light snow we will be getting every other day for almost a week.
and the temps being at about 30 as the High.

So riding the bike to my friends house to do the work soon.... not happening! :(

Got alllll winter long.
No way in Hell am I chancing a wipe!

Just gonna wait until every single part I bought arrives and then take it over when the roads are 100% bone dry and clear!!!
Which actually means a few days AFTER they are bone dry and clear so the rock salt is gone too.
I DONT like gravel!!!!!

Wipe on it once (gravel with the GS), lesson learned.
Wipe on it twice, shame on me! hahaha

Tomorrow.  :thumb:

Wont be on tho for at the Very Least a week.

As the rest of the parts & items im waiting for wont arrive for at least that.
Most est on the tracking says 2nd 3rd or 4th of Jan.

Putting the exhaust on is the 2nd to the last step, so I cant do that til I get everything.
Very last step is the carb sync (still waiting on the sync tool as well)

Still waiting on the seat to get finished.

But I honestly have No idea when it will get done.

More important matters at hand right now.

Sister (had breast cancer 6 years ago)
had a seizure last night (first one)
Called 911 and she went to the hospital.
After some tests and Xrays, it appears her cancer is back and spread to her brain.
Shes still getting tests done, so how severe it is atm we are not sure.
Doctor said she has as much chance to get through it as she did before.
but that was last night after only looking at Xrays.

Also, she is 37 but a little slow.
basically has the mind of like a 13 year old.
So shes basically completely innocent and im not completely stable right now to give two craps about getting bike work done.

Also ><
My mom has health issues as well, Huntingston disease and something else.

Early last year I moved back in with them to help take care of what they cannot.
Two women with health issues, they needed help.

but now after this.
I pretty much have to take care of EVERYTHING now.
and I mean Everything!
Cooking, cleaning, shopping, the bills, the animals.

I was taking care of the large things, shopping, & bills til now.
Now, its everything!

So I will get to it when I can.

No idea when that will be as I have to first see if my mother is capable of being alone for a few hours.

Compact air horn!  :icon_twisted:  :icon_twisted:  :icon_twisted:
Lower fairings (near mind condition!)

More to come tomorrow.

Sadly, I dont even care about it right now :(
yeah if that didnt happen last night I would be smiling.

Yeah I "Should" be making progress as soon as I determine my mom is safe enough to leave alone.
but with a trac phone on a necklace on her at all times when im not home.
A certain prescription one doctor put her on is actually what im almost Certain is what has made her Unstable to put it short.
Yesterday she didnt take it and was perfectly fine.
Today I gave her medication to her (including that one pill) and she was just Out of it all day and even needed help walking.

Other doctors said wing her off of it so she doesnt go through withdrawl.
but Get her off of it!

So tomorrow I wont give her one and see how she is for the next 2 days.
Then stop giving her any unless she starts to not feel well (withdrawl)

When shes better and my car gets fixed (Axle and seals need replacing) I will be able to continue working on it.
Tuesday I take the car to the garage to be checked out, fixed, & inspected.

heres some pics of everything thats arrived in the past few days and week to hold yas over.
Headlight, chrome control covers, & carb sync tool arrived today.

Stopped over the fabric shop yesterday.
Leather wont arrive until Mon or Tues and then one more day to get the seat done.
Got home & what arrives shortly after?
My extra seat I got for cheap  :thumb:

But yeah, the new one will look Alot better.

Isnt why I bought it tho.
Stock one, to have pretty much a Normal beam of light, I have to have the high beams on ALL the time.
Low beam I cant see Squat and no fixing that but replace the old POS. hahaha

Thanks man!

and

Seat is Done! :)

Car isnt.
So I have to go and pick it up on the bike and hopefully it fits in my backpack.
Im sure it will but at least with the rear of the seat sticking out of the top of the backpack with the zippers closed as much as they can be and tied together to keep from opening.

Personal matters (and theres quite a bit) got to me pretty good last night.

seats back on the bike.
didnt go for another ride yet, garage called and the transmission coolant line had to be dealer ordered.
Knowing crazy dealer prices, I had to look up somewhere else to buy one from.
Found some on ebay for only around $40.
Called to make sure I had the right part picked out and he had already sent a guy to the dealer to pick it up.
As they had One in stock and it was only $45.

Car will be done later today.

Seat looks good.
Also looks good on the bike.
Extra or more foam was added so its alot bulkier and need to be broken in.
As it was a little stiff getting it back on the bike.

Dunno which on the foam as they were broken into last night because the pieces of trash were probably trying to break into the building next door attached to theirs they assume.
So they were busy talking to police.

They also had enough material leftover and gave it to me.
Its enough to redo the seat a 2nd time. (just giving an example of how much extra they had)

I think I preferred the black seat but it's not my bike. So whatever you like is all that matters. Looking good  :thumb:

thats why im glad I got a steal of a deal on another stock seat for only $30 instead of the average $100.  :thumb:

that one will be black.

which is actually sitting right there under my helmet :)
have to redo the covering tho, but its stock foam so it will be easy.

hahaha thanks.

and sadly... so do I. hahahahaha

all good, I'll see how it looks when its broken in.
As its a little too plumpy right now in the pic.

if I choose to take it off, oh well. mistakes happen.

(edit)

Okay, instead of it being a complete mistake going with the red... ( I had a fever when I went over okay!) haha seriously I did but still stupid to do.

Going to spray the sides of the seat black with that duplicolor fabric paint.
Just so the red isnt a complete loss and waste to have been done.

read ALOT of praise on that spray too.
just fades over a few years, but not expensive at all to respray.

Update!
No pics, should have taken some :(

Started out taking the headlight and mount off (yewwww rusty!)
Completely removed the radiator as im flushing the system, cleaning it up, & repainting the side covers black.
Side covers, air box, some wiring, etc etc everything in the way to get at the carbs.

Removed the carbs and just took the top and bottom caps off, then removed the same crap y'all do with the GS's.
Everything was VERY clean!!
Still gave the bowls, caps, & jets a cleaning.

Removed the rear valve cover and checked the valve clearances........ Oye!!!
3 were at .004mm!!! last one was at .002mm!!!!
When adjusted, they need to be set to .015mm, so obviously they were not checked in a LONG time!!!

Then called it a night! (Sunday night)

Last night.

Took the front cover off, checked and adjusted those.... even worse then the rears!!!!
One was at .004mm, the other 3... Not even .0015 would fit!!! (thats .0015, Not .015!)
Set those all to spec .015mm

Soooo lucky I didnt do any valve damage!!!

Then began stripping and sanding the front cover since it was the worst being up in front with all the debri and crap.

Got it to about 75% done in too much time and twice the effort because the sandpaper I bought was Garbage!!!

Was tired and sore, called it a night!

More today!

As I picked up more sandpaper (the good kind I've been using) and finally grabbed the Engine Ice coolant. (last fluid I need to replace)

I'll start taking photos as I have my laptop up at my friends garage im doing the work at.
So I can look up the service manual because theres like 4 sites with online ones.

Nice!
And yes, chop the crap out of it! hahaha

Its one of those V shaped cruisers (Personal YUCK!)

Well, snagged very little pics.
I just wanted to get the dang covers done already.
My patience is slim to none lately so they are not my best work, but good enough for being mostly hidden.

after sanding

Cant see too well but as I said before, I just wanted it done and back on the bike.

So the bolts are still dirty and rusty.

I know, it was severely V shaped. I'm working on that. I dropped the front, and am lifting the tank and seat front to flatten the top. I'm going to have to restructure the seat, as well as the ... everything.

but WAIT

you have that bmw in the garage and you ride ANYTHING else?

you've been holding out, my man.  :2guns: :2guns:

Not my garage and that isnt my bike either.
Both the same owner.

Update on some purchases tho.  :thumb:

New throttle cables since the outer covers on mine are nasty looking. (leaves me with an extra set of old ones)

SS brake line and clutch line.
Translucent red since I will already have Plenty of chrome up there.

Did you have to drain the oil in order to take the covers off? I've never done it before but I want to clean mine as well as replace the gasket. Not sure if I will make a mess if I don't drain the oil.
Title: Re: Tombs 87 Honda Super Magna

Short answer is yes. BUT it can be done. Draining and replacing the oil and filter is always a good thing anytime you work on your bike :dunno_black:

Sorry I just re-read what you wrote. You were talking about the TOP covers and not the SIDE covers so the answer is NO you DO NOT need to drain the oil. Sorry for my confusion.

If you meant the side covers then refer back to what I said before.
Title: Re: Tombs 87 Honda Super Magna
Post by: Tombstones81 on January 17, 2013, 11:05:37 AM
^^^ hahaha

Nah on draining the oil for the top covers.
A little bit did drip out from the front cover, not much at all.

The side covers, yes and no.

If you keep the bike straight up, then yes u have to drain the oil.

If you lean the bike on its side enough, you dont.
I watched a video of them changing the clutch plates on a super magna and they had it tilted on its side just enough not to have to drain the oil.

Hell No!!!
No more sanding or polishing up aluminum for this cat for a Long time!
They wouldnt stand out much either unless the engine was black.

and got some more work done last night.

Cleaned the engine area up while the carbs were off.

Put the carbs back in
easy using a Longgg pry bar, putting the rear boots halfway on the engine and halfway on the carbs while the front ones are set in place.
and then just applying a little pressure at a time on the rear of the carbs to get the rear boots in place.

Tossed everything above the carbs back on that I took off.

Then the radiator and hoses, & filled with engine ice.

Grabbed the tank and got her started up with a little effort since the throttle and choke cables are off.

Engine sounded great, so I didnt mess up adjusting the valves :)

But with the seat and side covers off.... WOW did that exhaust sound like CRAP because of the leak.

Last bit of the night, decided to take the POS stock exhaust off.
Nicely came off with ease unlike the first time!

Was pretty shocked to see how bad the exhaust leak truly was!!!

Cracked on the opposite side of what I had originally repaired.

finally getting my axle and seal put on my car later today.
so I wont be getting over the garage until late.

Finally some actual progress & pics of the things I need to put on instead of just maintenance!

Got over the garage and my friend was napping, so I had to wait on getting help.

Took the gauge housing apart as Im going to repaint the gauges frame.
Tossed in some red led bulbs for the tach and speedo.
One of them had 1 out of 2 bulbs that were smaller and the bulb actually fit in the indicator slots.
So I took the extra small reds I had and tossed them in the temp and oil slots.
Then bought some matching colored ones for the rest.
Also need to snag some for the brake lights.

One guy showed up at the garage to hang out and then the owner finally woke up.

Jacked the bike up & got the rear rim off for extra room.

Got the new exhaust clamped together... UGH that was a b!tch!

Put the new exhaust in place on the bike and had to hammer (rubber mallet) quite a bit on the bottom pipes to get them flush all the way up onto the rear header pipes.
Clamped it all down and the exhaust is ON BABY!!!!
Except for the front headers because I had to clean up the rear rim and put it back on because the jack was in the way to put those on.
Then had to call it a night (3am almost 9 hrs later)

Exhaust is together and on the bike Tight as hell!!!!! (meeting points which is good)
No way I will EVER have to worry about another exhaust leak Anywhere!!!

I don't know how, but this gets better looking every time. I love those swept up pipes. what a good design.

you have to ask yourself: How crazy am I going to get when those exhaust end start blackening up?

hahahahaha

My friend whos been helping me asked me the same thing about the exhaust turning black.

He completely puzzled me.
Im like HUH turn black?
He said yeah, the inside of the ends of the pipes.... ugh he had me worried there for a second.

The hell do I care if the inside is black, as long as the outside stays nice and purdy! hahahaha

kk got some more work done today!  :thumb:

Took off the handlebars and the top triple.
Began painting various parts.
Installed new throttle cables
Got the front header pipes installed.
Cut off half of the undertail of the rear fender eliminating the plate mount.

and finalllllyyyyyy!
Started the baby up with no handlebars or top triple! hahaha
had to pull the throttle cableby hand

Sounded freakin GREAT!!!!!

But no video of it until she is Finished! (which includes carb sync)

Also, the guy I bought the pipes off of along with a bunch of other items sent me this for nothing along with the throttle cables I bought off of him.

Thanks! and HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Update! :)

Got a Little bit of work done tonight.

Would of been more but I wasted like an hour fiddling with the throttle cables.
Stupidly, I was putting the cables on with the throttle tube upside down ><
or else it would of taken me only a few mins.

After that, got my air horn installed and all wired up! :)
Holy Hell is that sucker LOUDDDDD!!!! heeheehahahahahaahaha!!!
thats going to be LOTS of fun O:)

and since the throttle was finally installed.
I started the bike up normally this time, to make sure everything was Ok.
Because now tomorrow, I can finally sync the carbs!!!

Then the rest of what I have to do is just a walk in the park :)

Oh yeah...
and the lower fairings are going to have to wait until its warmer out.
Its been mostly in the single digits all week here and I have to paint it outside (but not dry outside)

and this time I didnt forget my camera in the car! :)

so heres a clip of the exhaust without the carbs synced.
but of course, it doesnt sound as good or as deep on camera as it does in person.

http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10200260738662335&set=vb.1269150161&type=2&theater

Hopefully the next one will sound better as I will have the bike outside of the garage when I do so.

and finally, some pics with the camera instead of my crappy phone.

Those bars are a bit common to SM's.
They look WAY Better then stock, but most of the others have them tilted even with the mounts.

Im 6ft2, so I need mine further up.

and now that I actually got the bike turned around.... they are looking VERYYYYYYYY sweet! (fronts been facing the wall til tonight.

and UPDATE!!!  :thumb:  :woohoo:

Carbs finally got synced  :woohoo:
Ran and sounded Soooo much better and smoother!

Got the grips and controls finally mounted up on the bars.
Also installed the new SS brake line (SS clutch line tomorrow)
Freshly painted black side covers.
Rear fender installed and finally mounted my plate.

think thats it, freakin Exhausted! (the carbs ate most of the day)

forgot my camera at home again.
Phone had to make due.

and the levers and resi's are not done yet.
Brake line done but called it a night when I finished bleeding the fresh line.
and I have to do the clutch line tomorrow.
Then install the new levers.
and finally tighten them down.

AKA: Do the bills, buy the groceries, clean, feed the people and animals.... basically Everything and I mean EVERYTHING!
(my moms and sisters health hasnt been great)

and update!  :thumb:

Out and about a lil bit.
Stopped for more black marine vinyl for my extra seat (soon to be Primary seat!)

Also stopped at the shop I inquired about repainting my bike.

Since its a "Professional Shop" and not some hole in the wall establishment...
The cost wont be too cheap.
Roughly between $1000 and $1500.

Which, I can do that easily since its not going to get done ASAP.
Pretty much over time, so I will have enough for my deposit when I take the parts up.
and will have enough to pay for the rest when its finished.

'Right now"
Looking at getting a nice vibrant red paint job similar to this SM members bike.

(Same parts in Red)

Far out. What a dork. It's not like you're updating with a new thread each update. One build thread, update it as much as you like. Sounds like someone is a bit jealous. Don't let those unhappy people take out their misery on you. I know I appreciate the details you go in to. Looking forward to more.

Thats it for B&A pics.
The metal I polished up is quite dirty and needs to be cleaned.
So I wont bother with before and after pics of those til im done.
Going to be hitting them with the buffer again while my parts are being painted, just for the heck of it.

Also, getting different mirrors.
Those dont look good on the new handlebars.
Most likely getting these in chrome sometime before paint is done.

Update!

Stopped at harbor freight omw to the garage.
Grabbed some Evapo-Rust.

Started out removing the most rusted parts of the bike.
and some misc items, nuts, bolts, screws etc.

Tossed them all in a bucket with the chemical to soak until tomorrow evening.

Painted the radiator side covers and screen.
Along with the plastic behind the side covers.

Cleaned up the engine in preparation for repainting.
(still have to tape things off)

& then tossed on the radiator cover I got hooked up with
(still need to put some polish on it tho)

Pegs prior to soak.

Actually I think they will be in the way VERY slightly.
So I plan to move then back a little bit.

and

Update!

Got some painting done.

Engine came out MUCHHHH better then it was before!
Very minimal accidental overspray that will clean up just fine.
More on the side covers tho but I will be taking those off the next time I go up, so I can polish them completely.
So that is no problem at all.
tape was being a WENCH!
Sticking to my fingers like glue, but sliding right off of the engine parts ><

Took the parts out of the bucket from derusting.
VERY surprised!
It didnt work all That great on the pitted rust.
But the surface rust, ate that $h!t right up!

After painting was completely done.
Took a brush and the Limeaway and scrubbed the parts down the best I can.
Big improvement but not entirely rust free.

Painted the control covers, highway pegs (taped off the rubber of course) & one side cover.
other side cover has to be fulled stripped and redone as brake fluid put a streak in it from the last time I sprayed it.

Put some more parts in the bucket to derust and called it a night.

Started early but finished early as I just wasnt in the mood for once.
Just wanna put my head through a wall.
no biggie.

After taking the parts out of the bucket. (still wet)

Engine repainted.
Tape wouldnt stick worth Crap on a few parts.
So I said the heck with it!
Any of the bolts I didnt tape off, I will just take the paint off of them after a few days.
and yes, I did have cloth down the ports (carb & coolant ports)

and here are the parts I scrubbed with Limeaway.
(not worried about the inside where the pegs go)

Still got awhile before I can put the pegs back on.
So I will probably scrub them a bit more.
(cant put them on until im finished with the side covers)

Enjoy.

nope!  :nono:
I'll clean up all the areas that are visual tho.
Among other things.

WAYYY too much trouble to repaint what I can of that black.

It would be much better off being completely stripped and powdercoated.
But F that! hahahaha

At first, when I saw the closeup of the new bars on the bike I kinda thought they looked a little ugly, but then as I scrolled down and saw the bike as a whole with the new bars they really do fit the style of it. I like em. Wish I had the money to rebuild stuff like that.  A really awsome job so far on the bike. :)

Thanks.

hahahaha
& as I said, no real bills or a girl to waste my time and suck my wallet dry!  :woohoo:   :thumb:

& havnt gotten much done as I've only been up there once since painting.

Replaced the front wheel bearings. (still need to do the rear)
Cleaned up some more rust.
Tossed in the new float bowl gaskets & called it a night.

Basically waiting to buy the kevlar clutch kit before going at the side covers.

Also waiting on the coolant pipe O rings to arrive (pipes between the cylinders)
and new oil pan gasket (just going to drop it and clean it out)

Grabbed some Proper levers this time!!! (clutch lever on the other ones was wrong)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/140911625930?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

and im going to snag some new handlebar controls  sometime before the season hits as well.
Tried that chrome spray paint on the housings just as a temp thing til I replace them.
but even after fully dried, the crap just wipes off on my finger with a little pressure!!!

Also while fiddling with the front end.
Moved the handlebars back a lil bit to be even with the angel of the mounts.
was Slightly in my way of the speedo pre 55mph.

Just copying and pasting from the V4 forums I have a thread on as well.

Update!!!
(while im at the garage)
So pics will be uploaded when I get home.

Freakin STOKED!!!!!

Levers & gaskets arrived. (not why im stoked)

Came up, tossed the levers on (VERY nice!)
drained the oil.
Loosened up the R & L cover bolts.
Took the stator cover off, nice and clean!

Then checked if my gamble worked out... & it did
http://www.ebay.com/itm/NOS-Honda-V4...9bda01&vxp=mtr

$50, brand new & chrome?
Sure I'll take that!!!

Took the right side cover off...
HOLY F'IN CLEAN!!!!!!!!!
even the inside of the cover was clean enough not to bother with!
but of course im cleaning it anyways.

Dropped the oil pan... of Course I didnt need the gasket I ordered for it.
Wasnt sure what shape it would come out in but its perfectly fine.

and now the same deal with that.
HOLY F'IN CLEAN!!!!!
Even the screen was freakin sweet!
of course I cleaned it regardless.

Nothing had even Slivers or shards or Anything in them!

Absolutely stoked right now!

Got detailed pics of everything as soon as I took parts off.
Dont have the software installed on this laptop to upload tho.
has to wait until I get home.

kk back to work

(edit)
and I dont care if it being so clean is normal if nothing is wrong or expected.
I honestly didnt expect it being 26 yrs old

(end of that post while I was at the garage)

and home

Finished with cleaning the inside of the right cover & oil pan.
Tossed the oil pan back on (didnt forget the screen)
Took the rear shocks off and halfway soaking in Evaporust. (all I could fit)

New chrome stator cover.
Perfect fit   :thumb:

and yes, I know about the minor overspray on the frame.
already said I plan to take care of it.

Called it a night while things were going smoothly and my mood was top notch!

(edit)
and yes, I plan to "sometime" get the rest of the covers chromed. (sides & tops)
or else I wouldnt of bothered with that stator cover.

Also like it because I havnt seen any SM with anything other then stock.
Except one or two with just a plain chromed cover.

(edit)
also grabbed  some mirrors finally.
a little on the cheap in Price side, but a few fellow riders have purchased similar priced ones from the same seller/site and had good results.

What might have also helped, is the oil I had in it was maybe between 100 and 200 miles old.
Only drained it because I wanted to drop the oil pan.
and I consider it to be a nice fresh flush job.

and forgot to update from the last time I was up at the garage.

just copying it from my other thread.

Update

Didnt start out very good ><

Removed the springs from the rear shocks so I can clean them perfectly.....
First shock I got apart was blown ><
Second one.... friggin rod was bent!!

So glad I still have the stock shocks
Will just have to clean those up now & put them back on.

Then I stripped down the untouched areas of the side covers & polished them up.

Could have gotten them looking better but they are good enough!
A few, but mostly hidden areas didnt fully strip on the right cover.

Two updates since my last reply.
Just copying from my V4 forum thread.

Update....

Finally starting to put it all back together.

Got the coolant lines back on with fresh gaskets (between the cylinders)
Carbs and everything above and around them on.
Tho the carbs were a real pain to get on this time ><

Then started on the handlebars, so I can get the mirrors mounted and pics taken.....
Nope!!!!
Friggin throttle tube broke!
Put one cable end in and went to put the other one.... Snap!
Broke the friggin eye completely......
It was quite brittle to begin with, broke with barely any pressure.

Stopped messing with the handlebars right there!

Cleaned up my stock shocks and put those back on.
Left one went on nicely.
but of course, a Simple 5 min job on the right one took 30 friggin minutes!
Bottom holes just didnt wanna line up, eventually got it.

Sorry tho.
No pics.

Soon as I got to the garage, got a call that completely KILLED the good mood I was in.
Add in little BS on the bike thats supposed to go nice & smooth and the throttle tube breaking...

when I got the shocks on.
I simply cleaned up and got the heck out of there before I went nuts!

(end update 1)

Didnt get much work done on the bike tonight.

Repainted the side metal black covers.
Refilled the radiator as a nice amount drained from taking off the coolant pipes.
Finally put on the side covers on the radiator.
Removed the clutch pedal from the old mount (new ones coming)

Then just sat around BSin while friends worked on another bike.

Cant do anything else at all until more parts arrive.
DD Kevlar clutch kit should be already otw.
New throttle tube is otw.
and just paid for the brand new left side peg & mount to match the right side new ones.

Also not even bothering with everything on the handlebars yet.
Just going to buy the VTX handlebar controls first as im going to start selling some old parts I have from my previous bike.

and, the bike Finally went down! hahaha
Not even a scratch on it.
It was in neutral and must have rolled a lil forward when I moved it a lil forward to work on it and put it on the stand.

Most of the weight pretty much landed and then slid down my leg.
Leg is fine, was sore as hell for awhile tho.

and the end of the handlebars landed on my friends compressor hose and went right through it.

ZERO damage and not a scratch

(end update 2)

and the new throttle tube just arrived  :thumb:

Wont ever have to worry about that sucker breaking!!!
Pretty dang solid!
My old one was so damm brittle it wasnt funny!

Now, just waiting on the clutch kit to arrive.
if its even sent as I asked for the tracking number but didnt get it yet.
and the new left side peg, mount, end cap, & rubber to match the new right side I have.

Until they get here, im at a stand still.

Been awhile since I updated here.

$h!ts just been crazy all around.

Just going to copy from my other build thread as usual.

Finally got back up the garage tonight.

Tossed the new throttle tube in the grip.

Mounted the new left side peg & cover back on finally.

Then most of the night was taking the stock wiring and soldering it into my new VTX controls.
Which came out GREAT!

Put in the new resi sight lenses.
A little messy around the edges but its all good!

and finished it off with checking to see how well the solderless LED strip connectors work.

Which work Great and even tugging on, they didnt flicker

(new peg assembly & mount, but not the clutch pedal)

new sight glass (a bit messy but its better then I had before)

(end quote)

Had a bad day, soI left to go up the garage.
Stopped and got myself a 6 pack of relaxing medicine

Started out chuggin 2 beers rather quickly and got in a pretty good mood before touching the bike much.  :thumb:

Got the handlebars all finished up (everything mounted)
But the brake sight lens was Very slightly leaking.
Popped that out and redid it with alot more sealant.
But now I have to wait at least 24 hrs before I can fill it.

Of course it wasnt as quick and easy as that tho

Then slowly measured & wired up my LED strips.

Those are all done and ready to be placed on the bike

Mirrors finally on. (mirrors are not set in this picture)
New levers, mirrors, & controls.

(end quote)

after that, didnt get up to the garage for at least a week.

Had to replace the axle & seal on my car.
Long story short....
My first time doing it and all the help I looked up or asked...
Nobody knew a dang thing!

Shes all good now and got back up the garage!  :thumb:

Got the LEDs mounted to the bike and all wired up.
Still going to add one strip below the carbs tho.
Also have to tuck in the strip on the right side in the middle more.
after the body is back on, its the only piece that will stand out.

everything else will be hidden pretty well by the body parts.

and that is It for work needing to be done until the clutch kit arrives. (if)
or the body parts get done being painted.

Looks a bit much with the bike being naked, I know.

again, it looks like its a bit much because the bike is Bare Naked!  :icon_eek:

Also, the control box got messed up from testing out all the lights to make sure they were set correctly.
thats why I didnt have a selection of colors to choose from.

2 new control box's right next to me now tho  :thumb:

Going to be adding 2 or 3 more strips when I go up later.

1 right below the carbs in between the cylinders.

and 1 or 2 behind the radiator cover to illuminate it  :thumb:

think it will look pretty cool

(this cover)

thats it until later.

and STILL waiting on the friggin clutch kit!!!!  >:(  >:(  >:(  >:(  >:(   :2guns:

his excuse as for why it didnt go out Last Tuesday was because he didnt have anymore springs to go with the kit and had to order some.
he should have gotten them no later then this past Tuesday.

He asked if I wanted the kit or my money back as I said I was going to retract my payment if I kept feeling like I was being screwed around with.
(thats the email when he said about the springs)
I said I want the kit but all he has to do is let me Know when things happen.

So its now Friday and no word or reply.

Just emailed him this morning saying either give me a tracking number showing it went out or my money.

I've had enough patience.....

Thanks guys  :thumb:

Yeah I picked out a Mitsubishi Red when I was looking through sample sheets that were painted. (all the reds)

Didnt even know it was a candy paint when I picked it out, I simply liked it.
Wasnt told it was either! hahaha

When I stopped by to see the parts and take pics, the owner said it was a 3 stage candy.

So, I asked the guy who did all the work on the parts if it was. (local guy I used to know)

heres what he said.
it's a base color, two pearl coats and then clear.

Finally is together as of today.

Ran into some coolant leak problems that put it on hold yesterday.

all good now & running smooth, just some minor tweaking left.

I reckon if we had a BOTM here.. that'd win it actually... probably until May!! .. honda or not!!

i commented way back somewhere that i initially thought Tombs had bought a "super" Magna .. cant remember if i ever put a link to what i meant...

... so much gladder now that it was the bike!! ..

only real use for the car version is to sink it in a bay as an artificial reef .. but i heard that even eels draw the line before a magna!  :D

I had a Magna once upon a time and it was one of the best cars I ever had.
