My wife asked me this question the other day. Actually the question was more along the lines of "What is your dream motorcycle?" After lots of thinking, I decided I'd rather buy 3 used rides so I could do some wrenching and have some variety. My choices:
2010 Versys for around town ($4k used).
2002 Aprilia Futura for longer hauls ($4k used).
A used Vespa Clone (Bajaj Chetak or Genuine Stella) to drive around town.
What would you choose?
The very best/sorted BMW R80GS I could find !!!.

I had 2 of these not very long ago maybe 2 years ago.
Buell 1125R signature edition.

Slap an aftermarket intake and exhaust on it, fix the stock stator, tune the fueling, and enjoy. I do love me some Buell.
wouldnt mind me an xb9s O0
Well, one bike store has brand new VStrom 650s for under $9k. Plenty of new and 2nd hand KLR650s for cheap as well.
Cruisers.... I've got a soft spot for Triumph Americas, but most are over $10k but plenty of HOnda Shadows and C50 Boulevards for cheap too.
Michael
would like a 650l have one for sale @ shop for under 2400. but need to be damn near 6'4" to touch ground that is a tall assed bike

I think I'd go for a VFR - really nice looking. Though I think I might prefer the VFR-500. I saw one at Backfire Moto and drooled over it.

had a 500 come into the shop today, guy let me take it up to gas station to refuel it. i didnt want to come back it was a fun ride.
Either these:
Yamaha virago 535/750
Suzuki DR350 to convert to a supermoto
Maybe an old Vespa for fun / project
Or, screw all of that, and go for fun:
Ducati hypermotard, then somthing old and cheap for longer rides... hey, a gs500?
A GS500 to ride around on for giggles and stuff. Hey, good idea :thumb:

No monster love? What is wrong with you people.
too busy riding their gs500's and one bmw. 10g's id go ducati or hd, and one gs, unless i went "basket case" then i could get all 3 of them. but downside to that plan of attack is that would leave enough cash to make one rideable/safe

Funny, somebikes people yearn for (hayabusa, for example) I would not take if you were giving it away.
I would get a GSX1250, my local shop has one i could get for $10,000 and it looks almost to a GS500F with full fairings, feels nearly identicle when you sit on them to!

They ride lovely. The front seat is slightly forward slanting compared to the GS. So there is a tendency to slide into the tank while on the go. The steering is, of course, not quite as responsive as out GS - but then most bikes aren't. And the thing is soooooo easy to speed on. And take a corner a gear or two too high and they just muscle out with their torque. Lovely bikes they are. Although I find the small screen sends all the wind right to my helmet. Which is why I prefer naked bikes.
Michael
I'd find an S1000RR on CL and pay whatever the difference is.
But for something more realistic, I'd buy an SV650 or something. Probably put the rest into mods. That's assuming I can only use the 10k for bike stuff.
