Title: Getting GS running again - sat with no oil
Post by: mdo15 on August 18, 2012, 03:45:34 PM
I purchased an 07 GS500F a few years ago as my first bike.  Learned to ride on it, loved it, and used it as a commuter bike for two years.  In December 2010, I transferred to a duty station in Japan (I'm military).  In order to get my bike shipped overseas I had to disconnect the battery, then drain all of the gas AND all of the oil out of the machine.  I did so, and my bike arrived with the rest of my household stuff about three months later.

Although I had every intention of getting it up and running to use in Japan, there were way too many hoops to jump through before being licensed to ride off base in Japan and I just didn't have the time to get anything done before leaving for deployment.  So, my bike sat for two years with no gas, no battery, and no oil.  Now I'm back in the states, with the GS sitting in my garage in pretty much the same state as it was two years ago.

I've recently started getting the itch to ride again, and wanted to get it back on the road.  I'm not the most mechanically inclined person, but I want to do as much of the work myself as possible.  I did some research and found out at least a few things that I need to do to get this thing running again.  Here are a list of things that I KNOW I will have to do.

1.  New battery - obvious
2.  New tires
3.  New chain - old one has rust on it
4.  Clean out the gas tank - has some rust in it from sitting empty for so long (found a thread somewhere on how to do that)
5.  Clean out carbs

Now, my big question is what problems have been caused by having all of the oil drained?  I'm sure there is going to be more to it than just changing out the filter and putting more oil in.  Despite my best attempt at searching, I haven't found anything about what to do with a motorcycle that has been sitting without oil for so long.

Also, is there anything else that I haven't thought of that I will need to have done?

I wouldnt even worry about it not having oil in it.  Some seals 'maybe' could dry up and crack, then leak when you put it back into action, but doubtful.  I worked at a engine/transmission place that had a full warehouse of engines/trans that sat for years and they weren't worried about none of them.

Myself, I had an f3 engine in storage for a couple years then started messing with it and it ran better than I remember it running before.
