Title: GS500 Engine needed
Post by: jwrphil2010 on August 19, 2012, 07:59:13 PM
I have a 1999 GS500 with a messed up engine. The rocker arm is broken and although it is easy for me to rebuild I'd much rather just buy a working engine. So if anybody on here has an engine for sale please let me know and tell me the cost or send me an ebay link.

Remind me again where a rocker arm is in the GS500 engine?

Yeah, I didn't see any in that engine I just tore apart. Come to think of it, I didn't see any pushrod either..... ;)

I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume you haven't opened up your engine yet?

Where are you at? I'm near Cleveland OH, & have the engine out of my 97 sitting on a pallet ready to be shipped. $150 plus shipping.

That's a good deal if it's a solid runner.

My best friend sold the bike to another one of my friends and he messed it up pretty bad it still runs but only has 40 pounds of compression. Anyways I bought the bike off my friend for $100 and picked it up at the shop they are the ones that told me it was a rocker arm I haven't had the chance to crack it open yet so yeah it seems I don't know the actual problem now that you guys have brought it to my attention.

Hey JP is there anyway you could post pics of the engine so I can see what it looks like and if it is a guaranteed runner I'm interested in buying it off of you.

You should try an tear the engine apart.  If you have the skills to replace the entire motor, taking it apart (not re-assembling it to run) will be cake.  Most likely the block and head are good, and these separately sell for alot more than a non-running complete motor.

Plus, if you're replacing the motor anyways, what's the harm? Just my $.02

Off topic.......

Is that yellow jack the one from HF? If so, how do you like it?

Yes, that's the Harbor Freight jack. I like it for what it is, but I would prefer having a lift table if I had the room. You have to strap the bike down to the lift, plus add blocks to work around exhaust pipes, etc. If you don't have it strapped down and pull a wheel, the bike will fall off. A friend of mine learned that the hard way with his Harley.

Tell me some more about this please, miles, service history, age? I'm in Columbus, and if it's a good running engine, I could save you a lot on shipping costs...

Why don't you give the guy who posted about wanting an engine a shot at it?

Well he isn't paying for shipping I am so you wont be saving him anything on shipping. Also I already told him I am going to buy the engine.

Not trying to steal a sale, just putting up my interest.

That's fair.  Maybe next time you could say something like, "if the OP is not going to buy your item...".  It sounded like you were trying to tell the seller that you could save him money if he were to sell it to you instead.

You're right. I read right past the op and went for the pictures and saw "Cleveland, $150" Cant blame a guy for being irrational for that kind of deal. Sorry for the confusion jwrphil

Yep - if I wanted to be a parts whore about it I'd have bought it. You can never have too many spare motors (or parts for that matter)  :icon_lol:
