Title: "Anything goes" --> Could there be
Post by: South East Rocket on December 22, 2003, 03:01:15 PM
I love this discussion board, but I've got to admit that it's getting a little cluttered between motorcycle related talk and general "off-topic" subjects.
Anyway, I thought I'd just throw in my 2 cents on this one. :dunno:

Quick example that sparked this thought:

-OT: Puff Daddy took someone off the payroll
-Proficient Motorcycling by David Hough
-15 tooth sprocket?
-Ignition Rotor weight?
-Finally I got it!!
-Hi ho, Hi ho back to school I go...
-Nose Surgery Sucks
-I have a cold -please feel sorry for me
-OT: The Great Earthshake!
-Just got a new Job!!!
-Question on Front Brakes Pad Switch
-wheres kerry?

These are the titles of the current topics on our 1st page.  Out of 12 I could only count 4 that were remotely related to motorcycles or motorcycle riding.
Now I understand that this forum is for riders and should let riders talks about what they please.
However, it's getting tougher and tougher to get and research GS related subjects among topics like:  "I have a cold...", "Nose surgery sucks" ...

I dont have anything against any of these topics but I do feel that keeping these, Off-topic and GS related topics, separated would make it easier for members to navigate and retrieve relavant information.

So?
There isnt enough to talk about anymore, so we may as well go off topic. I am pretty sure we have covered just about everything that you could possibly have to say about the GS.

I disagree. I feel we need only one board.  The reason is I always hated small forums with many sub boards that only get 3 or 4 posts per day and some none at all.  With an average of 20 to 30 posts per day there is little need for expansion.

And I don;t mind OT posts at all BUT I do want to avoid a board filled with all OT posts.  OT stuff is fine as long as there isn't a ton of it

So what I am saying is GStwin is not a democracy, its more like a theocracy.  I am your benevolent charismatic leader and you will do what I tell you as long as it's in the name of the GS500 our god.  Soon I will be recruiting suicide bombers to go after Honda and Yamaha dealerships (henseforth known as the great Satans) accross the continent

The REVOLUTION begins soon!

Rich you may of not taken the time to read the whole post.  I'm simply saying that I'd like to see a separate section (like the for-sale/trade section) for these topics that don't relate to motorcycles.

I'm think that GStwin.com has a lot more members and should do like some of the other motorcycle sites (gixxer.com & cbrworld.net..) and create different categories since it's now receiving a LOT of posts.

I agree with you but looking at the topics on the board, it's already gotten that way..  Currently there's 4 outta 12 topics that are bike related

dunno, kinda torn between the two, true not much gs postings, but how many times can you tell someone how to fit a gix wheel or mirrors etc, the gs is a decent bike, yes it does break, but when it does we've already got (usually)a topic covering it.  the ot posts break up the reading a little bit, i can go from a gs topic, to one of 96gs's jokes to someones nose surgery :dunno: , and back to a gs topic before i am done for the night :dunno:

Seems I have sparked quite a heated debate here...
This may call for a poll?

That's fine, but keep them away from Kawasaki dealerships please!  ;)

I'm with the Benevolent One.  Given the sum total of new threads on this board is arount 20 a day, I'd hate to have to go hunting them in more than one place.

Frankly, most boards where there's more than one forum, I look for the "View All New Posts" button first.

This *is* still the best resource for GS info around, so I don't have a problem with OT posts.

I have one thing to say about all these OT posts.

WINTER

Yeah there's alot right now, but as soon as riding season cranks back up you''ll see them diminish.

besides some of them are actually funny.

Yea, it does seem there's been more OT posts with winter.  I'm 70 miles away from my GS, so I have nothing to talk about bike related.

I think it would be nice to keep OT posts in another section, but I'm an organization nazi, so of course having all the posts mixed together will drive me crazy  :)

Hey, John, since you mentioned you-know-what-bombers you have probably alerted some great computer under a mountain somewhere, have the guys in shades and big black limos started hanging about outside your gaff yet???
P.S. I think the board's about right.

Looks like the "debate" is over.

All hail The Great and Wise John!

The on topic stuff will pick back up when the weather warms up in the spring.

If even all the topics have been covered concerning the GS, all the riders have not been here to see them all. The GS is well known as a beginners bike so there will be new riders joining all the time. They may ask the same questions that have been asked several times over. Yeah, they could do a search but it is usually easier to just make a new post. As for the riders that have been around awhile, do you feel a responsibility to assist new riders with their questions and problems? If not, you should! I may have been riding for over 25 years, street riding since '86 and owned over 10 motorcycles, but I am still learning new stuff about the GS every day.

I've done my fair share of off topic posts but I noticed that a lot of o/t posts eventually become on topic so to say. I dont want to go fishing around other boards also, one is simple and quick.
