Title: Fork spring ??
Post by: GSF500 on August 27, 2012, 05:16:45 AM
HI again, I am interested in changing my front fork springs to upgrade the front end. I puchased an 06 R1r rear shock today from ebay and would like to know what front spring change you would recommend. There are so mant types, sizes, and manufacturers + info on here, It's hard to decide :dunno_black: I don't think I want progressive springs.... or for those that have them,........ how do you rate the handling? What about standard springs just heavier? I am looking at Race tech .80 .85 or.90....? Question is that I want to stiffen the front up to compliment the rear shock but I don't want to feel every hairline crack in the road. I guess I would like to hear what set up you are running and if you like it or wish you would have chaged it to something else WWWWHHHEEEEWWW!! Thanks for your time and I will use the search when I get time :thumb:

Sonic springs are the most common on here.  I put Sonic .90's on mine a few weeks back and they are like night and day from stock.  The forks on the GS are pretty crude, so pretty much the only option is springs and different fork oil weights, air gaps, etc..........Not sure if an R1 shock will fit, the R6 shock is the typical direct bolt on upgrade to the rear garbage on this bike.  Good luck :thumb:

How much do you weigh (with riding gear on) and what sort of riding do you do?

Thanks for the responses :) I know I'm asking the same questions that have been asked before :icon_eek: I just like to know if anyone has something new to add because things change. Anyway...Sorry it's the R6r not R1r shock. I will look at the sonic springs .90....did you do 10w or 15w oil with the spring change?Did you do the rear R6 mod? I am 195 pounds and I ride the back roads and twisties 85 percent of time and somtimes I ride 2 up. I will look at the sonic springs....any idea where to buy them from? I will do a search and check back later.

The poster above you is the owner of Sonic Springs, the website is in his sig......I weigh 190 without gear and I used 7W Belray fork oil (it's all I had.....).  I just did the R6 shock this morning and rode the bike to work tonight...It's a night and day difference from stock, well worth it.

I have an '09 R6 rear shock and a set of progressives up front with 15wt...no complaints.  I'm 5'9 175.  Do yourself a favour though and adjust the rear shock to match.
