Title: Mirror Stem Extensions
Post by: Badot on August 31, 2012, 06:52:08 PM
I found these on ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Motorcycle-Black-Mirror-Extensions-Stems-10mm-Thread-60-and-100mm-Long-4-Pack-/140735557554?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item20c47e2fb2

Was never aware of these before, but kind of felt stupid for not realizing that somewhere there would be something like this -- it is just a simple threaded connection after all.

Does anyone have any experience with these? I already plan on using loctite on the connection so the lack of locknut isn't an issue. It seems like an easy way to fix staring-at-shoulders syndrome without layering on those cheesy 1" offsets that interfere with the choke adjust if you don't grind a chunk out. Just wondering if anyone can see any potential problems with them (vibrations, breakage, etc)

And yes, I will confirm before buying that between the stalk and the mirror is a 10mm connection I can 'splice' this into. I believe there is but I can't presently check as I'm at college right now. (I wish I had my gs here instead of the car though)

I haven't used them personally. But I would think they would exaggerate the vibrations and make it hard to see.

I really like the cheap ebay bar end mirrors. I can see better out of them, than anything else I've ever used.

Bar end mirrors make the most sense to me, it's just going to be very hard for me to get over how bad I think they look, I haven't found any that I like the looks of.

Although to be honest, I have no idea how cheesy the extensions would look either.

Those things you show seem to only raise them up.
See here on Junior the mirror extensions that take them up an inch or so and out by about 2.5". These are cool. Couple people make them. SW Motec does. Twisted Throttle has them or check ebay for others. They are universal. I have them on 2 bikes (well, one now as Junior's stock mirrors were removed when I put on the new old stock fairing so the mirrors are in the box for a future project)

Adidasguy, I currently have something very similar to those on my bike, only my left one has a bit ground out for choke adjuster clearance. I still have to lean over a few inches to see directly behind me in the mirror. I'd really prefer being able to see behind me in my peripheral vision. In about 5000 miles on the gs and another 5000 on a Nighthawk 250 I still haven't been able to get used to leaning over to check behind me without consciously thinking about it - I still do, but nowhere near as much as I feel that I should.

My mirrors have the 10mm thread connecting the stem to the base, and another connecting the stem to the actual mirror. So I could splice the extenders between the mirror and stem and they would move the mirror upwards and out. If I feel I can bend the stem without breaking it I'll attempt to make the bend sharper in them so the extensions push them more outwards than upwards anyways.
