Title: ramblings on fantasy alternatives
Post by: Phil B on September 11, 2012, 10:39:08 PM
So... I've saved up some money for a "nice" new car, to replace the older, somewhat falling apart gas guzzler of my current family car.

Then I had the daydream idea of, "so what if I took a large chunk of that money and bought a shiney new bike for myself instead, getting something cheaper for the family car? muahahah...."

clean 2008 gs500f near me from stealership: $3500.
newish (2009, 2800 miles) fz6r:  $5999.  Almost as good mpg as gs500, and a lot more pep.

Hmm, wonder how much a daytona would be...

WTH... this red beauty, around 2000 miles...  for $6200.
For a 2008 triumph 675.

DAYum....

"Okay Phil, be sensible now... a sweet ride but you'd probably get carried away and kill yer idjut self.
Or best case wheelie-flip or drop it or something stupid.
Plus the mpg is only 45mpg. Dont do it..."

BTW: the idiot is giving it up because he bought a HARLEY instead. WTH..

FZ6R!!! You'll get 80% of the Speed's fun for--well, maybe a little more than 20% of the budget and worries, but definitely better value for your money. You may want to check insurance rates before committing, though. I'm with GEICO and I was shocked at how much more an FZ6R costs to insure than my '99 naked GS.

$6,000 sounds a little high for a used FZ6R though.  I would hold out for a better deal than that if you are going that direction.

Except that for me, they're the same price :-/

The insurance will probably be killer, though.
Fer the lulz, I'm gonna ask for quotes on both today

FZ6R is cool ... you know what that R stands for right ... Rrrrrrrr ust.
Steel framed POS.
The triumph - I dunno ... maybe steel ...

Get a FZ6 proper non R ... maybe the s not sure ... or an sv.

Cool.

oh yeah, i forgot about the fz6
I DO like the fairings, though. Also they stopped having the fz6 in US, back in 2008(?).
I only see ONE fz6 for sale near me. a 2008.
Bright side is, its "only" $3999.. so, $2000 cheaper!!
But it has 20,000 miles on it, so probably due for a couple hundred in maint. ?

I checked insurance.
an fz6r is fairly close to what i'm paying now.  $320 vs $270.
however... the daytona would be "only" $100 a year more.  $420.
#@$!
I'm seriously lusting after the daytona. Trouble is,  I need a bike for commuting, and the daytona is probably not a good match for a 20 mile commute :D
But... But... So... sexyyyy.....

SV1000

torque monster-ness all over the place and probably decent for commuting. or just get a SV, do some minor suspension mods and you get more powah plus decent gas consumption  :thumb:

"probably"?? pffft. its a literbike!! official spec=38mpg

A sv650 was a semi-reasonable compromise in theory. But I heard it was fairly vibey.
In contrast.. I've actually ridden on a daytona.   Buttery-smooooth...
And it just out-sexy's the lot of em!

whattheheck... most of the post-2005 sv650s near me, are $5k +  !!
sod that, I'd get the daytona for that money!!

Would still probably kill myself on the durn thing though.. unless maybe I just put in a throttlecable limiter or something so I can never take it above 10k rpm ;-)

edit... Umm.. dayum.. .make that 8.5k? O.o

UK places sell restrictor kits, even for the daytona, apaprently:
http://www.fiinternational.com/ShowDetails.asp?name=Daytona+675&type=Triumph

But that's the standard learners permit "33bhp" limit.
Eh... could be worth it...

Bleahhh.. not as sexy to me... plus, this one is an oddball low price thingie. even a used street triple costs $1-2000 more

I'm kinda surprised its been up since august 1st.. i suspect its been sold already :-/
There's another one up, but it's $1000 more.

oh wait... text says he dropped the price. confusing...
plus it has bags. Oooooo...

Is there a reason people are now ditching the 2008 model I wonder?
I know the 2009 model has the 'R' type enhancements...

Ooo. someone put a daytona fairing on a street, lol.
actually looks decent to me..but thats 'cause he put clips on as well, for his track bike.  Otherwise, it would probably look silly.

But that's just for grins. Getting allthat together, would be a good deal higher than $6k.
Oh well...

from what i have 'researched' online and some 675 type forums.. the 2010 in either daytona or street seems to be 'the pick of the bunch' so far .. for used units anyway .. soon as i can get my overall debt load down to low level i am gonna pick up a 2010 Street Triple R ... better suspension for my 'fat ass'  ;) ... and its got the cooler looking Tach with part yellow face!

my sv isnt that bad. with the proper tires, tuned suspension, and properly synced TB's and you're in the clear. i guess its the v-twin oscillations that sometimes drive people away.

and 5K+!!!??? those folks need to get a clue. i got my 2007 2 years ago for 2K even and ride the durn thing every day.
