Title: Painting the tank
Post by: junk301 on September 13, 2012, 09:30:29 AM
Hello gstwins community,

It has been a long time since I posted but I wanted to paint my tank all black recently and was wondering the best way to go about this.  I have the stock black front fender from a 2077 gsf500 and id like to colour match that!

Sounds like you want good, so remove, drain, take off the cap and petcock, tape over the holes, either sand to prep or hand off to a painter who will charge you to do the prep as well as the painting, and finally hand off to a painter with the appropriate booth/supplied air mask/fancy catalyzed paints to get it done "right".

For cheap, the process is the same up to the point that you rattlecan it rather than handing off to a painter. In either case, prep is important, and letting the paint dry fully is also important. If you are going to delve into using catlyzed paint at home, please have the common sense to get a suppled air mask first, as the crap is extremely bad for you, which is why handing off to a properly equipped pro is really the smarter approach.

Given the size of motorcycle parts and the minimum amount of paint you can buy, might be best (and a guaranteed match) to repaint the fender and tail at the same time as the tank is getting painted.

If you have stickers, they have to come off. If you have dents or sticker-scars they need to be filled and sanded out or they will be there in the new paint. A better job will involve a few rounds of priming and sanding the primer.

I need to do this as well, as my tank has been scratched in several places while I had it in storage. I don't however have any indoor area in which I can paint, only outside. Is this an easy process, to paint the tank and rear plastics?
