You can use any year of forks.
The difference in 2004+ compared to older ones is the mount for the reflector. You get around that by using Harley stick-ons. I use them always just because they look better.
If you need to replace seals - ever - the newer ones are a beaitch to work on. Older ones are easy because of a difference in the thingy inside that holds things together.
(I'll check my stash for 2004+ forks..... 2004+ ones need new seals otherwise good, straight clean tubes.)

These are 2009 forks on my 1992. I use the reflector mounts for the fog lights.
