Option 3: Relay which includes visiting each of the continental 48 STATES

NOTE: The OP will be updated often to reflect new info.
Original credit for the GS500 Relay goes to GSTwins.com members Mister and Clancy from Australia. This is an attempt do something similar in the USA. You can read all about the Australia relay here --> http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=53572.0
I think it's high time that the Americans complete a GS500 rely of some sort. I volunteer to start the process. Realistically, this may not happen till spring since it got cold FAST here in the midwest.
Overall, this is a basic relay system...have some sort of baton or small object to record trip, member information, trip notes, and words of wisdom. When a leg of the trip is complete, then one will "relay" to the next member to continue the journey. Australia used a tube as the baton with a "scroll" inside to record the information. Pictures and a dedicated thread can be used to document the hand-off and fun along the way.
Relay thoughts:
1. GS500 Relay around America. This would start in the east or west and go across the outer perimeter of the country (North along the Canadian border, East along the Atlantic, South along the Gulf and Mexico, and West along the Pacific). Could stall in some areas such as Montana and North Dakota.
2. GS500 Relay across America. This would be coast to coast. Maryland to California. Maine to Washington state, etc.
3. GS500 Relay across 48 states. This is exactly as it sounds. Visit all 48 states in the continental USA. The nice part about this is that if Joe in Vermont gets skipped on the Relay Across or Relay Around, he can join in the fun when we get to Vermont. This would have a more lax agenda than #1 and #2.
4. GS500 Relay across 49 states. Add Alaska to #3.
Lots of options here, but brainstorming at this point. It's easy to say "Well, I'm going from Florida to California on I-10 and we can do this in 1 week." Preference should be given to the RIDE (meaning non-Interstate). For example, I live 2 miles from US-50 which goes from Ocean City, MD to Sacramento, CA. A great route for the coast-to-coast option.
I volunteer to put together the baton or packet, and drive to the first Gstwins.com member within reason (Several hudred miles).
As mentioned above, a thread would document people's adventures along the way and allow for others to join in. One concern is that we have a situation similar to the valve adjusting kit...it stalls/gets lost/or is no where to be seen again.
I'm willing to take that risk. I think it's a great complement to the Australia relay in addition to the GS500 picture game. This gives us all an incentive to RIDE.

I like it. I'm about 100 miles from the western end of US 50 in San Jose and about 30 minutes from Hwy 1 up the coast.
What now?
my fiancee and i are on the east coast in jacksonville fl. i will be monitoring this thread to see what comes of it. im sure if we could find the time we could assist in the matter.
For a Relay around America, there are two options that I envision (note that this is just a quick Google Maps). Pin 'A' is where I live. I put this as the starting point.
One thought is to dip a bit south into Colorado. Although the rides would be spectacular in Montana, I'd venture to guess that there are more members in Colorado.
Montana and North Dakota. Beautiful country:
The coast-to-coast option is pretty easy. Start at one coast, and end up at the other:
I think if this were to get off of the ground and be successful, there would need to be some guidelines and rules such as minimize Interstates if possible, don't make it a race, and most of all, enjoy the ride. There would also be a general route to follow so that it does not turn into a free-for-all ride to nowhere.
Thus far we have Jacksonville, and San Diego covered. That's a great start.
Awesome plan, I hadn't stumbled onto the aussy thread. Quick look at the photo have me stoked! I'll have to go back and read some of the adventures.
Your squiggly line avoids VA like the plague! haha just messing, but I am very willing to participate if we can map the route. I'm in Southwest VA(in the neck of the bird) and would be willing to travel east and then back west. Or anything that's within sane riding distance
Neck of the bird...never heard that one before. Just a rough sketch of what an outline could be. It all depends on where the members live. I picked Ocean City, MD out of the blue for the East Coast. Never been, and for me, I can take US-50 all the way across.
Looks like we are getting support here. But Steez, you will have to leave the moped at home.
Haha for sure, the shredpeds will stay home for this trek
Edit: neck of the bird comes from VA's shape (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=va&hl=en&ll=37.588119,-79.310303&spn=6.675373,14.27124&client=firefox-a&hnear=Virginia&t=h&z=7), looks like a bird mid flight (http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5310/5563805134_c920c501b0_o.jpg)
Lets definitely keep up the talk. If we are going to start it next spring we'll have plenty of coordination time. First thing to do is get a solid list of participants
Lister
-Steezin
Neck of the bird is about 360 or so miles with a nice twisty ride through SE OH and WV. I like it....may be a good starting point. South from VA to continue the journey I'd imagine.
once more folks get involved, im sure the stints that would have to be taken would become much shorter. looking at the routes now, it really makes me hope that more do jump in, because some of of these are outrageously long. i know its just now in the planning stages, but it makes me nervous.
how many people/stops do you think we would need to make something like this feasible? should there at least be a minimum distance covered for each participant?
I will admit, there are some spots that make me nervous. Assuming the "Relay around America" is picked...East coast I think we are OK. Southern US we could be a bit lean. Once we head west from FL, we need people spaced probably no more than 200-300 or so miles apart (remember, you have to ride home...). Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Montana, North Dakota, and Minnesota in particular have some sparsely populated areas that can be a challenge.
I think that we can get there. Good to see that this thread is moving along thus far.
200-300 sounds good. ive mapped out 2 possible routes for us. i think the longest that i think we would be able to do is just over 400 miles. i'll admit it, there arent a whole lot of decent back roads here in florida, but if it were to happen clockwise, here's where we'd be comfortable going.
8 or 9 hours depending on traffic, weather, etc to Mobile. if someone were to pop up and elect to take over somewhere closer, even better.
if it were to go counter-clockwise, i'd say something somewhere in south carolina at best. i'd give ourselves a 300-400 mile radius, see where people overlap, then pick cities to meet up in to pass the torch/camera/baton/kit/whatever
I'm in. I would do a leg from, say, Beaufort, SC to Brunswick, GA. Or Augusta, GA to Savannah,GA.
EDIT: Paulcet...I just saw your post. Thanks!
Another idea is to meet in the middle so that the other person does not have to drive 400 or so miles. For instance, if a leg was from Columbia SC to Jacksonville FL, maybe meeting in Savannah, GA would make sense. Then the member in Jacksonville could continue the journey westward in a few weeks.
Now we need some volunteers in NC or SC to close the gap between Southwest Virginia and Jacksonville FL, and we are on our way.
Possible route this far:
Cincinnati to SW Virgina
SW Virgina to somewhere in NC/SC
Somewhere in NC/SC to Jacksonville
Jacksonville to Mobile, AL area
The route continues from there...
I'm in Stuarts Draft, VA. I'm definitely down . There is a great ride, although not for the light of heart or inexperienced into VA from WV via RT-250 in highland county. I could take it around there, Charlottesville, or here in stuarts draft and run the parkway to steezin.
I'm in NH and Ill be keeping my eyes open on this. =] :thumb:
Huff1371, looked at the map, and yep...250 looks both awesome and harrowing at the same time.
I'm surprised at the amount of interest, and how far we can potentially go on the quest in such a short amount of time. Goes to show you what the members of GSTwins.com can do when we put our heads together.
I'll do Texas! :woohoo: Ok, I want to do Texas but realistically, errrrrr I could do a few hundred miles, possibly more to meet the next member. :D

brunswick is perfect to meet up at. about an hour super slabbing it from j-ville, so maybe 2-2.5 hours with back-roads?
Mobile would be the FARTHEST we would go, so any if someone could pipe up and close the gap some, that would be great. tallahassee-ish would be ideal :thumb:

Awesome. Now we need someone from Mobile area to eastern TX or Louisiana.
I am in CT and could cover New England, down through NJ or so, easily.
...But it's getting cold, and my bike is currently in the ICU. But come Spring, yes!

Agreed Tom. Winter is coming, especially for us northern folk. I think Spring would be the best. Over the Winter we can plan and route for the Spring.
I'd even be willing to do a weekend trek
I think it would helpful ranking the criteria for our relay. OP - maybe a poll is in order?
My opinion would lie somewhere here (in order of importance)
1. number of riders involved - most important
2. number of states/cities/landmarks visited
3. miles traveled
1. Rider involvement is first priority - me bringing it to someone else in CT, and they bring it to MA would be better than me just bringing it to MA myself. Us riding together, even better.
2. Instead of going right to joe schmoe's house in MA, take the baton through downtown Boston to see the sights.
3. We don't need an efficient panamerican route - backroads, doubling back, loops - all good. More miles = more better.

True. Interest for this is more than I originally anticipated...just threw it out there, and looks like it may be a winner for the Spring.
Rider involvement and route is key. Without people in certain areas, it will stall. I don't think it is fair for someone to have to ride 1000 miles across the barren desert because of poor planning.
My thought is to have an "official" thread document the journey. This thread is just a brainstorming area to get good ideas such as yours. Riders could document their trip through the countryside/landmarks visited and take pictures along the way (we all like pictures). Also, a US map could be updated to indicate progress and routes traveled. I would suggest limiting Interstates, but I know that for certain routes, they are a must...like to cross major waterways, etc.
Judging from Australia's experiences, it looks like the riders met somewhere other than a residence. This is preferred since if you meet in the town square, you see the local sites, and have lunch or a cup of coffee to swap lies before the next journey of the trip.
Poll is a good idea. I'll try and get that setup soon.
I think the most important thing to remember is that it's not a race, and to have fun along the way. See some new sites, and meet some other GSTwinners...that's what it's all about.
Another idea! i will have to look into this when I get home.
Is there some photo sharing site where anyone can edit the picture? I am imagining map of the US, with circles drawn by each rider demonstrating how far they would be willing to ride. Then it would be east to tell if we have enough coverage. Will be like a giant Venn diagram.
Possibly, because in the meet and greet area you can map where you are. It's a map pinpointing where everyone is located. Not sure about the route though...but I'm sure it is definitely doable.
Tom, let us know what you find.
I'm interested. Located in CA as well. I do trips down to SoCal occationally, so could possibly loop a SD or LA rider in that way.
Just an update- I dont mind riding miles. plus it would be great to meet other people and ride with them. So my wife and I can cover ma nh or newengland mass and above.

i was trying to think of a way to tackle this part as well. maybe just a map of the US posted, then each participant adds thier own color coded circle, then reposts?
i just opened it up in microsoft paint, added a red circle where i would be able to go, added some text, put it on photobucket, and here it is :woohoo:
Dry_Humor, let me know how this works...I'm a B-/C+ student when it comes to this sort of thing...
MAP UPDATE!
Great idea Tom!! I went ahead and setup a GS Twins route planning map through google.
Instructions:
Its pretty damn easy to draw your spot on the map. First start by clicking the RED Edit button near the top left. Then either right click and click 'draw shape' or in the top left corner you have 3 buttons with the third being a drop down, bottom button in its drop down is the draw shape. Draw your shape by clicking the points(points can be adjusted afterwards as well) after the shape is drawn, add your GStwins user name in the shape's title.
It may take a second for the shapes to show up. I've set the map to full public access, but let me know if you have problems.
Link:
https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=216083428469334706913.0004ca8b0ee9785ee8b2b&msa=0&ll=36.949892,-91.142578&spn=26.819707,57.084961&iwloc=0004ca8b3b0ed93615aaf
If you browser freaks out when you try to draw your shape(like mine the first time), just close all google map windows and reload.
Added my circle/oval/trapezoid-thing. You have to draw a shape first, like a triangle, then stretch it out to look like a circle.
Steezin, a very big THANK YOU for getting this setup for us. I confirmed that the original link saved my changes when I added my shape.
I love it when a plan starts to come together...
So far the route is missing all of the midwest... I'm in Illinois territory and could easily do a 200mi radius that would reach both North (Chicago area) and South (Carbondale) areas.
Also, I can't figure how to edit the google map. I have a google account, logged in, but can only view it... I don't have editting options. What am I missing?
Edit: I just figured it out. I'm lame. You press the red Edit button, then you have the options on the map.

No worries mang! I though of the image for a while as was afraid or the size and quality after so many edits. 'Preciate the leg work though dry_humor!
Edited my instructions to include clicking the edit button. Sorry about that bockin! haha

You're not the only one who's stoked about this...
I'm in Normal, Illinois. I will add myself to the shape map. I'm sure I'll overlap with Bboy.
Updated the google map with my area.
Some names I can think of in NC/SC: The Buddha and Ben2go
And another thought, just because it is too cold to ride up north doesn't mean we can't move our baton along a southerly route this winter. In fact, I know it can get miserable riding down here in June/July/August. Oh, I'd do it anyway, but some might not.
I did a 1000 mile run in Mid-October. Mainly south through Tennessee and Kentucky. It is possible, but watch out when the sun sets. Cold.
That is one idea that I had, was to start this going south, and let it trickle along the Southern US to the west coast during the Winter, and head north in the spring. If there is high support and demand for this, then we can try it.

No worries, we could arrange a group leg of the relay if it works out that way!
- Bboy
Added myself to the well covered area of the map! Looks like we'll at the very least, get the tri-state area covered! :woohoo:
Added myself in. I REALLY don't want to be anywhere near D.C. in any vehicle other than my truck. I know we have some NOVA riders.
Northern Virginia drivers near DC are no joke. Did a 4 month stint in Reston VA. Crazy
I vote that it goes from coast to coast, but that it would include as many members as possible.
Example(from the looks of the map) it could start with Bomb in IL and travel southeast then down the east coast and across the bottom of the states.
I would love to see it travel up the west coast and all the way back across the northern border but it looks unlikely
I voted for perimeter. However, that might not be possible.
What about a hybrid? Give it until spring for all willing participants to put their areas on the google map. Then work out a route to cover that? Still might be difficult to get across the mid-west....
Lets let the data and membership decide the route like paulcet suggested.
I'd also like to see it get all the way around but if we have a 1000 mile gap, we may need to improvise.
holy crap that map is awesome. i knew there was something that could be done to streamline things. i've added my coverage area. overlaps to the north, but someone still needs to cover far west fla, bama, mississippi, and louisiana.
i wouldnt mind getting things started sooner if everything falls into place either.
just a thought....if things dont really pan out with making it all the way around with just GS's, would you guys be open to maybe opening it up to sayyyyy the SV forums? i know that there would be a lot of people there that would find this idea VERY cool and would fill in a large area of the map.
just a suggestion, but i'll leave it up to you guys to decide.
Magic idea! While you are planning, maybe have a read of this ripper little free e-book on the Open Library by a guy who crossed the country in the very early 1920s on a bike:
http://www.archive.org/stream/acrossamericabym00shepuoft#page/n7/mode/2up
Great story, great read.
Can we talk about what to include in the "baton"? I forget how exactly the Aussie's did it, but I think there is some kind of log with everyone's name and handle, year of GS500, and how many miles they went with the baton, correct? Also, we could include a huge road map of the US so that we can highlight the route that you took. Then later on we can more easily transfer that to a google map. All of this should be kept in a waterproof container. Who wants to build it?
The baton used in Australia is a toothbrush holder with a keychain on one end and a charm on the other.
Inside is a paper "scroll" used to record info such as GS member, miles driven, route, and notes.
Ours can differ, but make it too big and those if us minimalists like me won't be able to carry this on our person. A pencil holder would be another idea. Its used in schools and is typically waterproof plastic/vinyl and is flexible. Think of it like a tough ziploc bag.
I know that I would have 3 willing bikers coming with me; just friends and stuff for involvment. We need more people to add themselves. Also tom your in CT right?
I didn't see you on the map so I tried to extend my riding distance.
I think with more people involved,we will in fact have a nice tour ahead of ourselves. :)
If the gap from VA to GA doesn't get filled. I could extent my radius further south to meet up with Paulcet. I have friends in Atlanta and could manage.
Yeah, I could do atlanta as well... Probably take the Slab on the way up or back...

I volunteer to build the baton/document holder. It will contain at a minimum a US map and a log.
The best option I see is a clear mailing tube like this
(http://i1260.photobucket.com/albums/ii569/jestercinti/Clear-Mailing-Tube.jpg)

Just roll up the documents like a scroll, stuff in tube, and Presto! You have a baton.
I can do CA coast. Napa down to Paso Robles or San Luis Obispo. I live between those towns. Handing off in either terminus is great. Wine country on both counts.
Cool. Add you shape to California. Look at OP, we have a Google map started with areas shaded where people have indicated their riding radius boundries.
Steezin has some instructions on how to do this in an earlier post in this thread.
Might want to include some kind of banner or flag or such to snap pics of landmarks, views, riders, etc. I know a couple Harley riders that do this with a stuffed animal, granted they have full-size trunks and pop up campers. A banner would probably be a better fit.
Good point. I think there is a low-cost silk screening place here in town. Something I'll look into. A small banner would be ideal.

Yes, sorry. Just now got around to putting myself in.
My parents, sister, and brother-in-law ride too. Just not GSes. Hopefully they won't tarnish the reputation of this USA tour if they come ride with me too.
FWIW, I have a GS (obviously), Dad has Shadow 750, Mom Shadow 600, Sister Virago 250, Bro-in-law FZ6.
As long as there is always a GS carrying the baton, I say the more the merrier.
Agreed with Bombsquad. As long as there is a GS'er carrying the baton, it can be an entire army riding with you.

This is a great idea also.. Now if we do end up with huge gaps. is there a backup plan to get it to the other areas. For example: Newengland has a good gap to the MW and texas as well.
Just shooting out ideas.
I think until we get the final rider participation list/map (which will come with time), too soon to tell how the route will look. Thus far, it looks like there is more interest in a 48 state relay than an American perimeter or coast-to-coast relay. Again, only time will tell.
However, I have thought of that issue (huge gaps, what do we do now?). If too huge of a gap, we can modify the route. As with most quests similar to this, there will be some detours along the way. More of a squiggly-line route than a straight shot.
Let's keep up the conversation. I'm glad that there is a lot of interest.
Don't know how much these cost, but what about including a little GPS logger in with the baton/package? Track the real time position of it, see progress, routes taken, etc.
It wouldn't be too big of an invasion of privacy if it had an on/off switch, right?

Thought about that too...but the privacy thing kept coming up. This would mean that with today's privacy rules, we'd have to have a "GS500 Relay Privacy Policy" and that gets messy. And, there would be a record of everywhere the GPS tracking device went, and I mean everywhere (home, work, grandma's house, etc). Privacy laws also can vary by state/locality :police:.
It might be easier to skip a GPS tracking device. Just my 2 cents...
The laws don't apply if every user is willfully and knowingly carrying a powered-on GPS device, right?
I was thinking...you could turn it off 5 mins from home, then turn it on 5 minutes away on your way out again. No one would know exactly where you live, but there would still be plenty of information to track the progress.
Anyway, I'll keep it in mind if it's cheap/agreeable enough for everyone.
Tom, not sure. I am not a privacy lawyer. :dunno_black:
It might be something to look into, but I was just thinking on the side of caution here. It's like when the cell phones had Geo-tracking turned on without everyone knowing it, and it sparked an outrage. :nono:
So I just made this topic the website link in my profile. So if you are having trouble finding it, just click on the globe under my avatar.

We need everyones support on this to add themselves to the map. Even if you can't run a 300 mile distance- there may be others who could meet with you and continue the journey!
I tried to update the map with my area of operation. I live in Mount Vernon, WA and ride north/south from the Canadian border to Arlington, WA and east/west from Whidbey Island to the Cascades. My shape is kind of wonky though, I don't think I did it quite right.

Yeah, I could do atlanta as well... Probably take the Slab on the way up or back...
Missed this, 10-4!! I'll extent my circle to ATL. I've actually never heard of slab. Are you talking about Slabtown? Just wiki'd it and got the new "Art on the Beltline" looks pretty damn sweet. Would be a cool photo spot.
edit: my shape looks like a comic quote bubble haha

My problem was that I used the line tool instead of the shape tool, and I had it set to snap to roads after it already had a perimeter set up. It was pretty bad, but I got it fixed now.

Nothing against you or the other riders down that way. I just hate riding in town. Hell, when I was going to school in Bellingham, I would often leave Taarna at the park and ride and walk/bus around downtown.
I'd also be open to expanding my area of coverage. What I have marked is where I travel the most.

I know that feeling; When I go to boston I leave my bike at portsmouth train station and head down. Boston is so busy and packed that there is no way I could ride through that.

I tried to resshape it to entice someone between me and ohio to jump in on the map here. Come on!
We're getting there, one GSTwinner at a time.
Saw some good deals on Vistaprint.com for small custom banners. Does anyone have any artistic ability to come up with a design? We can do like a 3' x 1.6' small vinyl banner for pretty cheap...about $15 or so.
I am terrible in the Art Department. Was thinking of incorporating a GS500E and a GS500F facing each other with a Suzuki 'S' in the middle. I think Yama knows how to work the magic on this. I know he is good at the computer drawing programs.
im somewhat artistically inclined. i'll make some drafts tomorrow if work is slow.
good to see things coming along nicely :)
Vistaprint says that I can make my own banner with a .JPG image uploaded. Easy-peasy as long as the image looks good, and we want it to look good. If you have any other ideas, go for it...this is just one thing that I had in mind (E facing F with S logo in middle).

Ok, you know the rules: Pics, or it didn't happen! >:D
since my bike is what pretty much "brought us together", we decided that whenever we get our next tattoos it should be something motorcycle related, so i came up with this for mine...

and then this one the other evening for a start of the banner, then she stole it. so this one is off limits lol.

Sweet! Maine to Florida!
Now we need south and west.

Would three different relays work? maine to FL and the west side and from side to side? until we get a good amount of people? O0
I'd say the more the merrier.
The baton must be carried by a GS at all times during the relay.

I could do a south/west coast stint
Another thought is that i travel from OR - WA - MT alot, next summer i will drive from OR / WA to MT (i will be bringing the bike as well) and can travel around from there if need be (though a good chunk would be in a vehicle unfortunately so i would prefer not to break the bike chain)

I drew a shape for you on the map. Basically from Lake Charles to Baton Rouge, over to the MS-AL border and then back along the coast encompassing New Orleans. Feel free to check it out and change it.
bump?
Thanks for the bump. I expect this to slow down a bit in the Winter months. I'm still thinking about it a lot though...
Dry_Humor, I like the Sportbike drawing that you made. I think it should be the logo for the relay. Would you have any problems sending me the image file?
i actually have a bit of a draft for a banner, i just have to scan it in then work on it in the computer to make it look presentable.
i'll work on it then be sure to post it soon. i've been busy drawing my fiancee's christmas presents lately.
NP...you are quite the artist. I loose at Pictionary all the time cause I can't draw shaZam!. I'm like Apple Maps...Good intentions, bad execution.
ive got a long weekend ahead of me, so ill try and get the banner idea into the computer and cleaned up here soon. any newcomers that would like to participate?
So do I (the long weekend part...)
Thanks for doing this!
We have any idea of a start date? I know there's still a quite a bit of logistics to figure.
:D Man, i just noticed this thread and read thru it. This is kick a$$! I'm definitely gonna be part of this. Ive updated the map and am also wondering if theres any updates yet?
No firm dates as of yet. Early April sound OK?
I can travel a ways to get the baton to the first GSTwinner. Where it goes from there is the beauty of the adventure!
I'm in GA and can move it a state or two in any direction, so count me in :D

Love it Mr Dry_humor! Dinner at Clark's Fish Camp is on me. Is that still open in Jacksonville, FL?
My kind of place!
hahaha yeah it is actually. thats weird because my fiancee and i have been hearing a lot of good things about that place and we've been meaning to go for a few weeks.
Looks like there's already several people from CT in this thread.... I'm down to ride along whenever this gets going.
BTW what part of CT are you guys from? I rarely see gs500's around.
Dry, did some work in Jacksonville for a while (I-95 and Baymeadows area). That was the place that all of the locals said to go...so I did. An experience to say the least.
Just added to the map. I got Delaware, Jersey, NYC, up to CT if need be
Now that my zoning battle is over and won, I have more time to devote to this. Here's what's happened recently. GSTWINS member Dry_Humor made this:
^^ I think that we have a winner for our banner. Now, I think it's time we start planning this. Looking at the map, we have a lot of interest. Thus far, a "Visit every state" route appears to be the winner, so unless we have objections, let's go with that one.
Here are my proposed guidelines for the GS500 America Relay:
--The "Baton" must be carried on a GS500. Although other riders may join, they cannot carry the baton for it to be "official"
--We must hit all 48 US Contiguous States. This is more the 'Honor' system...not strict like some competitions requiring a purchase in every state with receipts.
--The Baton will get stuck at a location from time to time, and might get lost forever (Kerry's valve shim kit for instance). I'm willing to take that risk.
--I'll take a look and choose a route or method that makes the most sense. I am willing to travel up to 500 or so miles one way to start.
--Remember, we need pictures of the hand-off and the ride along the way. Try to avoid Interstates.
--The baton MUST pass through the West Seattle, Washington bike cave!
I'll create a new thread for the actual event since this is planning/brainstorming for now.
After all, we, the members of GSTWINS can accomplish anything if we put our minds to it. I'm looking to start this off in the next month or two. Keep in mind that it will take time (So did the Australia version), so don't expect this to complete anytime soon.
Most of all, have fun. I'm looking forward to Spring and a good challenge!
I was gonna say something about the website url being 'wrong' on the banner... but I just noticed that the message board url is 'gstwins...' and the main site url is just 'gstwin...' and the banner at the top left of the message board just says 'gstwin.com'
So nevermind, I guess its right! Lol
I'm ready for this to take off. I am actually planning two trips this summer.. one early and one mid/late both heading eastward. It'd be cool to sync up one with this if possible, but I also don't mind an excuse for another!
- Bboy
I think it makes sense to head east. You are in IL, I am in OH. Probably 2-2.5 hours away. Steezin is in VA. Might be fun through the hills of WV...
A thought at least.
Banner looks GREAT!! Awesome work guys. I can plot it here at work full size in color and mail it to whoever if you need.
I'm finally back in town(been out of town for business for the past couple months) just a couple more weekends left in the shred season. Then i'll be full throttle on the project! Lots left to do, but its doable.
Got a couple trips planned this summer as well. I'm shooting to have the gs running by May ~22nd. My old roommate is going on a cross country ride(on a shadow unfortunately..) and I will be trying to ride a bit with him. That trek we'll be heading east into Kentucky. The other trip is from radford, va area to snowshoe, wv(the mountain we ride in the winter). - - It'd be cool to work the relay into those rides, but like Bboy, don't mind an excuse for another trek!!
Stoked for this :woohoo:
Plot out the banner (not too big now...) and mail it to me with the shims :thumb: Can it be laminated, or will it be regular paper?
No laminater in house.. I'll call the people we get to do our mounting(owner is an old friend) and see how much just to laminate the banner. Shouldn't be too much so i'll take care of that.
How big are we thinking? Guess it depends on the container size. If its rolled too much it will be a hassle to present for photos.. I'll mull it over
Big enough that it looks cool...small enough that your average Joe can carry it on their GS.
Remember, we don't all have GIVI boxes (I don't at least). Maybe 8.5x11 is all we need? Dono :dunno_black:.
Or...some sort of Vinyl/Nylon/Tyvek Home Wrap type material (if you can print on that...if not, don't worry). Then it can be smashed and mashed into a ball and still look cool.
Don't care...whatever you think. I'll send you the file that Dry_Humor sent me. That might be a better resolution.
So will the baton be a container for the banner?
I checked the map for updates and realized my area was not on there. Pretty sure I did it already, maybe I didn't save? Recreated it again this morning..
I can do the Pensacola, FL(or mobile) to Baton Rouge LA. I think one member here said he wanted to do LA so I would pass it off to him and probably ride with him. I also added a norther section I can do if that is needed.
Printed a couple banners out;
8.5x11 seems a little puny.. 11x17 looks nice, and would work better in photos, but w/o folding would require an 11" baton. It definitely all comes down to the baton size. One thing i was thinking- we could modify the image to ~8.5x17 landscape, then it would roll nicely, look better in photos, and not need ~foot long baton we would need for the 11x17. This is just pipe thinking - if laminated and solid we could put some ties on the banner to attach on the bikes. That would help solve presenting the tightly rolled banner bounce back.
I'm going to walk around the office real quick to see if i can find anything to rig a test baton out of
Quote from: jestercinti on September 25, 2012, 06:55:27 PM
I volunteer to build the baton/document holder. It will contain at a minimum a US map and a log.
The best option I see is a clear mailing tube like this
(http://i1260.photobucket.com/albums/ii569/jestercinti/Clear-Mailing-Tube.jpg)
That would contain a US Map and a log printout similar to this
(http://i1260.photobucket.com/albums/ii569/jestercinti/Log.jpg)
Just roll up the documents like a scroll, stuff in tube, and Presto! You have a baton.
^^ This still has my vote for the best baton. Something cheap, waterproof, and lids that are secure. I also agree with a nice spreadsheet log in the baton as well.
Depending on the time frame of this, I could potentially take it to Key West or cover the area between Jacksonville and Mobile.
I'd suggest having the banner made from fabric with screen printing like a real flag. I doubt it would be very expensive, and it would be a lot nicer for pictures and packing back into the baton.
I haven't read the whole thing. However, shouldn't we have an accurate map of where everyone is located to determine what type of relay is best?

There are holes. Mostly out west. The Midwest, east coast, and south are good. West of TX, not very much interest with exception of some LA and WA.
Was hoping that it would pick up, but this far not really out west. We can start, and if it dies in TX, then so be it. Was under the impression mostly that once this takes off, more would be interested.

Link:

If you browser freaks out when you try to draw your shape(like mine the first time), just close all google map windows and reload.
This is how to do it Mr. Adidas.
I don't understand the map, but that's nothing uncommon for me and maps :embarrassed: seems to be a few highlighted area's over bowling green ky for what ever that's worth.
While the map is not perfect, it was the best use of free resources at the time. As its grown, so has its complexity.

For a short run of shirts they can be made without a screen now a days. They actually have inkjet style tshirt printers that come out really nice. I'm pretty sure that's how a lot of those online stores can sell weird 1 off shirts so cheap.
Yeah, I just went on zazzle and made the nicest long sleeve they sell with my forum name and gstwin.com on front and the banner on the back. $30.00

Any more on a banner? Bombsquad? Steezin?
At this point, don't care if its vinyl or some sort of nylon. Would like it to be somewhat resistant to moisture. It will get wet, I'm sure of it.

I have been looking into custom bandana size banners. I think it would be more than I'm willing to spend at this point though for just one of them. Maybe someone knows how to work an angle and get something like that for cheap.

Toledo is pretty far north from what I remember... like almost Michigan, right? ... so if I'm thinking right, you could possibly pair up with kbankovi and hit michigan for us since no one has posted from that area yet. Just a quick thought after glancing who already had coverage in northern ohio.

Yes, Toledo straddles the OH/MI border right off of I-75.
Edit: If nothing else, I can take the image and go to one of these photo printing places and have it printed on some sort of vinyl or nylon material. IIRC, it would be like $15-$20. Not a bad price.

I can print and laminate a banner 8.5x17 for $5. We can do it any size, but that will give us a shorter baton and still be big enough to see in photos. Put a couple of ties on the corners to string between the bikes and voila.
I can have it printed and laminated by the end of this week, got a stack of some shims for ya too jester(more than you probably want, bit I don't need em haha)

Draw your shape by clicking the points(points can be adjusted afterwards as well) after the shape is drawn, add your GStwins user name in the shape's title.
It may take a second for the shapes to show up. I've set the map to full public access, but let me know if you have problems.

If you browser freaks out when you try to draw your shape(like mine the first time), just close all google map windows and reload.

I'm right near Toledo, Ohio i could do a short leg, don't have the experience to trust myself on long runs. Bike isn't going yet though, if I could get worked in some how that would be sweet.
Toledo is pretty far north from what I remember... like almost Michigan, right? ... so if I'm thinking right, you could possibly pair up with kbankovi and hit michigan for us since no one has posted from that area yet. Just a quick thought after glancing who already had coverage in northern ohio.
- Bboy
Yeah I'd be down to pair up with someone, I just glanced at map back on the first page looked like it cut close to Toledo.
Test print of the 8.5"x17". The final will be laminated and string/nylon rope instead of rubber bands. Thinking of getting some sort of metal grommet (http://www.jakprints.com/images/wide-format-grommet-zoom.jpg) for the string holes as well. Do you all think ties on all 4 corners would be better than just top 2 corners?

Always open to suggestions, my printing guys are ready to laminate once we get the go ahead from everyone.
I've been having some difficulty finding the water proof tube mailers. Anyone had any luck? Would like to find one like Jester had posted earlier.
Most of the time they want you to order a lot...but I have found a few where I can just buy 1. I can take care of the tube Steezin.
I like the banner. Grommets on all 4 corners is nice. 2 are fine too though.
Been busy lately, but want to get this sent over to my printers by the end of the week. Is everyone OK with doing an 8.5"x17" laminated banner with ties to hang on the bikes for photos?
I'm definitely open to other options. This is so cheap I won't get butt hurt if we find something better after i get it made. Haha well.. I just answered my own question. I'll send it off this afternoon and will post photos of the final!
One more weekend shredding in WV, then its full throttle on the moto. I'll be the only one in town the first weekend of april so i'm hoping to get some serious time in the shop.

+1. Although there is snow on the ground in Ohio, Spring is almost here (well, technically it is, but you know what I mean).
Ship it along with the shims. I think you have my address. Just be sure to let me know what size shims you need too.
More than welcome gents! Getting stuff printed w/laminate is easy peezy for me since its what I'm doing regularly anyways
Delivered with the rolls of paper this morning!!

Final dimensions came out to be 10.5x19.5. A bit bigger than I had planned, but i didn't take in to consideration the lam overhang to seal the paper in and get the grommets on. It rolls up fine and fits in my 2" diameter test baton, but a bit bigger diameter baton might work best to keep it from being a curly Q when we unroll it for photos.
I'll get it and the shims to the post today or tomorrow Jester!!
Now to finish the damned gs :2guns:
Very nice. Now let's do this!
Awesome! Once i get this, we'll get a plan together and start.
I'm in Columbus,Oh and could ride to Cinci to hand off to jestercinti.
We have a tube/baton. It even extends. Trash picked at work. I think it's intended use is to hold blueprints or some sort of legal documents.

Nice! I'd say that should work.
I really can't wait for this to start!

Baton looks good, and free is the best number there is out there!
Update on the banner - The laminated version ended up being really shitty. Lam kept coming apart after being rolled.. So i've ordered a 1'6"x3' outdoor heavy vinyl banner from vista print. No grommets in the corners on this one, it comes with free clear adhesive hangers that attach on the corners though. It was a bit more expensive, but i think it will hold up better, also look better in photos. Along with the banner i snatched a ink pen with the same banner image on it for signing the baton spreadsheet!
Website says the banner has been produced and is shipping now. I'll get some photos when it arrives
Got a few more bits in the mail for the GS, I'll be wrenching all weekend on her this weekend. Still need to get more jets and a new battery, but pretty much have all the needed parts purchased
I guess I should have paid a little more attention to this thread. I do graphics work for a print shop and we have the capabilities of printing banners and such! Oh well, maybe next time!

has there been any hashing out of routes done yet?
it looks like from what's on the map for covereage we could start in the middle, get the midwest done, head up to maine, down the east coast to florida, then west?
The opposite? ideas? preferences? druthers?
dont mean to step on any toes here either....
Here's my high-school math plan.
I'm sort of the organizer of this...so it starts in Cincinnati Ohio 45202.
One idea is to do a boomerang loop. Head west to Indiana and Illinois...pick up some riders along the way...have them a part of the relay...have them carry the baton for a while. End up in KY or VA to hand off the baton to the next rider. From KY/VA, head north to hit New England, then on south "I-95 corridor" to FL. Once in FL, it's the I-10 corridor to the west.
Not saying take the interstates the whole way, but there are typically state and federal highways that interstates effectively follow. I-70/US-40 for instance. One of my favorite movies is Disney Pixar "CARS". I'm a firm believer in stopping to smell the roses.
Motto for the relay: It's not the destination, it's the journey.
So, something like this:

Banner's in! And it looks TONS better than the cheapo laminated one. Text is a little blurry when up close, but it looks great in photos!
Size shot with pen beside banner to compare
(http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll129/steezin_and_wheezin/2013-04-08_18-47-49_475_zps030cafd4.jpg)
its awfully weird to see some of my work being taken so seriously. the banner and pen look great! is there an approximate start date yet?
Well, I need to get the banner, and coordinate the hand-off with the next person. All that takes time.
One thing to keep in mind. This will stall. If Bob can't meet Jim, then it does not move forward. I know we are all getting antsy, but it will start soon, I promise.
Banner is in the usps mang's hands and heading yer way Jester!
Awesome. I'm ready.

What's the time frame looking like on this ride? I'm trying my best to stay faithful, but my location is currently very volatile. I'm applying for jobs in Michigan (plus one in North Carolina, but that's a bit of a long shot ), so if this is happening in a couple months I might be in a different region.
My life is very volitle now as well: Divorce.
Once I receive the banner, we'll get started. I need to kick this off before things get too deep, and the bike gets sold.
Hate to hear that Jester.. Sorry for the delay on the banner. If the bike gets sold, we could pull the twinner parts whores together and build ya one from scratch!
The laminated banner was so cheaply done i didn't want send it out(it looks good on the shop wall though!) Hope my bojangling hasn't tossed a wrench in the time frame..
Nah...I'll kick this off soon.

Hmm, if you guys are running to/through Charleston WV I might want to join in the fun, I'm about 30 mins southeast of there. (Montgomery)
Any chance this baton will go from eastern pa to western pa or visa versa? If so I'm interested in participating in the relay.
Badot / OZ...add yourself to the map. That's the system of record for who is interested. Look in the OP for the link.
Timeframe of Mid-May I will kick this off. It all depends on which weekend I see my son. Once that is figured out next week, We'll set a date.

I'm really sorry to hear about your divorce. That's really tough especially with children involved. Take care of yourself. Hopefully this Relay will afford you some opportunity to keep your mind and body occupied.
Es ok bombsquad. These things happen. This lets me get away for a while. The first part of May I want to get this thing started.

The weekend of June 1 is the SOONEST that I can kick this thing off. Work for me is busy in May (We have a large project going on...cannot miss), I'm moving, and life is just busy...
Therefore, it will start then. I'll post an official thread soon since the planning is pretty much done.
Steezin...this is your official notice to GET WORKING ON YOUR GS.

I gotta replace my tires if I want to participate, and that's not looking like it's going to happen in the next month.
Oh, I imagine it will take more than a month to get to you.
Nothing' but love for you Steezin... :kiss3: He and I have been PM'ing about his progress on the GS.
The good news is that thanks to Steezin, we have a banner. A real one. Not a mincy one, but a real one. And Dry_Humor created the graphic that went on the banner that goes in the tube that is strapped to the GS that lived in the house that Jack built.
WOOT!! Can't wait! Should be great timing for me.

It's a bit of a catch-22. If I have enough money to replace the tires, it's because I'll have a job, likely in Michigan.
Heck, by the looks of the route, Michigan could be months away or longer... Just keep checking the thread and don't get discouraged about it. You don't necessarily have to travel very far with it at all either. The route could easily mesh with another member who could meet you and travel through your city. We just don't know where it may end up, but it will be cool to get a lot members in on it. As jester said, it's not about the destination, it's how we get there.
- Bboy
Thus far it looks to be "Hit all 48 states" is the winner.
Rough route thus far...Cincinnati, Ohio (Where I live)...head west to Indiana and Illinois. Pick up some riders along the way.
Then head east. Pick up some riders/drop other riders off along the way...Give said baton to Steezin and Wheezin in WV/VA area.
He can pass to someone who will take the baton to New England. Once New England is done, Baton heads South along the I-95 corridor to Florida, then I-10 corridor west to California, then up to Seattle, WA through the West Seattle Bike Cave, then meander about in the rest of the USA.
It's not the destination, it's the journey.

I'll definitely keep up with the thread, but for now I'm going to remove my current area from the map. I'm afraid the mid-atlantic leg of the relay is not in the cards for me. When I do get a job, I'll update the map with my information and start planning from there.
One thing that might be a good idea is to take a picture of your bike and banner next to the "Welcome to..." State sign when you enter/exit a certain area.
For instance, I call Ohio home. When I leave OH soil, I'll take a picture of the "Welcome to Indiana" sign, then cross the street and take a picture of the "Welcome to Ohio" sign to document that I was there.
To document this, there are websites that designate by color what states you have visited. That picture can be updated in the OP of the official thread to keep track of where we've been, and where we need to be at a high level. Each of us can also post a picture of the rough route that we took...
Ross, I hear you. I'll spare you the details, but I have been on top of the world one day, only to be at absolute rock bottom a week later. After several situations like that, I tend to live a little more 'in the moment'.
Right now, I'm posting on GSTwins.com/gsboard looking to the future. At the end of the day, that's all you can do.
The fact is that people's lives and situations change on an instant. I, for one, have been there countless times.
Right on, man! Sorry if my posts sound depressed, I don't mean for them to be that way. My head is still well above the water, and I'm perfectly fine with not knowing where I'll be in a week at any given time.
A lot of my time right now (when I'm not applying for jobs) is spent looking at Reddit's r/motorcycles deciding what I want next, and at the NASIOC classifieds deciding what I'm going to do to my car when I get the money. I'm like Joe Dirt with the newest issue of Jegs magazine.
(First post)
Just added myself to the map. I can cover most of upstate NY west of the Adirondacks, and most of the Susquehanna Valley in PA.

Yeah, the wheel is moving quick on this! Can't wait to see the first leg of the Relay take off!
+1 on photos of state line crossings! And the USA map showing states we've tracked.
Looks like we have the east coast covered, but the west coast is looking bleak.. Hope we pick up some more people interested as we make progress. Would hate to see the baton go missing quicker than the west coast Kerry shim kit

Who is this Baton guy and why do you expect him to make so much of the journey with the bat... Ummm never mind ;)
I may be doing a long trip out west this summer to visit some old friends from the military. If I did I would go as far northwest as corvallis, oregon and as far southwest as San Diego, CA. I'd be leaving Chicago and could pass it off to anyone on the way if you'd like. I haven't set any dates/routes yet just hoping I can save up enough money to make it happen. Let me know if I can help you out with at least getting the baton out west.
This is pretty cool haha always wanted to do something like this. I'm in middle northern Tennessee (Sumner county to be exact). If it comes this way I'm in. Added my circle to the map lol no where near as big as everyone else, but every bit counts right?
Hiya jestercinti! I just now started looking at this thread. Wouldn't you know ... I was riding through Cincinnati on my GS500 right about the time you wrote the first post. (Visiting family in Somerset, KY and Dayton, OH with my Dad on his VStrom.) I got to add 6 new entries to the list of states that the ol' girl (my GS) has visited, for a total of 25 so far. (Not counting 2 Canadian provinces.)
Anyway ... given my location in northern Utah, I could clip the corners of Idaho, Wyoming and Colorado as needed, without too much trouble. (That is, once I clean out my carbs and get the bike to start again. Sigh....)
Awesome Kerry! This starts 6/29/13. Can't wait! By the way, been to SLC. Nice town.

ummm question.... how do we get in touch with the next person in an area to hand off to? or even to gather some riders to make a hand off?
Also, i have added my area im willing to travel in and perhaps could be persuaded to go further funds permiting.
PM, or post on the "official" thread, found here: http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=64264.0
Look on the map, and find out where the next person is in the logical flow of this across the USA.
Oh I can help out in east-central PA (Coal Region)!
