hello. does anyone know the type of chain the gs takes and where to buy one cheap online? thanks!
Don't buy cheap chains buy a good qualty one and normal u should replace the sprokets with the chain but the takes a DID 520V6 chain. don't go cheap tho coz u will end up adjusting it every day and then have to replace that but normal u can get a kit chain and sprockets for about 40 quid british pounds.
Never heard of a 520V6 chain from DID. My '96 came with a DID 520V (O-ring) chain, and my '99 came with a DID 520VM (X-ring) chain.
Here's the DID feature chart from the 2003 Dennis Kirk "Metric Bike " catalog. They only offer 4 DID choices in the 520 size (which matches the GS500 sprockets):

As mayz2010 pointed out, you don't want to go TOO cheap. Check out the relative "Wear Life Index" values in the chart - from the standard to the heavy-duty to the sealed chains. Big difference - not to mention that the non-sealed chains are only recommended for bikes up to 250cc. You'll have to decide whether the extra life from the X-ring warrants the extra price over the O-ring. (I replaced my worn-out X-ring chain with an O-ring, even though I plan to put LOTS of miles on this bike....)
