Title: any idea how to get this damned thing out of the basement?
Post by: yamahonkawazuki on October 06, 2012, 11:14:05 PM
an antique printing press might be trying to sell for my father. its been in the basement of my home for years. te wheel weighs several hundred pounds. whichever way it comes out, it has to go up a flight of stairs. any ideas, besides claning all the junk off of it, that i KNOW has to be done lol

It's simple...........We kill the Batman.

But seriously, how did it get down there in the first place?

Some dis-assembly required.

Agree. I would guess it was assembled there. No way to carry it down or up stairs in one piece.

That is going to give you some trouble... Maybe lay down planks or something on the stairs to roll it up, and have like 8 people help? Not exactly safe, but it may work...

If it weighs 1100 pounds I wouldn't dare try taking it out in one piece. Definitely break it down.

my grandmother and grandfather bought the home in1973. shortly thereafter it was moved down there from storage near chicago. i could take hte big wheel off of it, it would fit through the door. multiple people is a given lol. or i clean out the bsement, and sell it where is as is, buyer brings crew to take apart. because idk if the flooring can handle half a ton set in 4ft square. well 4x4'

Lay down planks and use your 500 to pull it up the stairs.

been w/o a gs since mom got cancer. i sold it to help with family bills. before she passed. i still see it ocasionally in the knoxville area planks definately though set printer on a cut down 4x8 sheet of plywood wax the planks will figure it out. been in the basement for 38 almost 39 years i dont think the floor over the formal LR will hold a half ton. BUT the floor in the den will. its a slab.

Aaron, is it a straight shot somehow to get it outside? If so, a powered winch may be useful getting the pieces up the stairs. Or even something like a boat trailer winch.

I know of someone who assembled an antique car in his second floor "workspace". It was pulled out through a window with a huge crane when done ... some "breakage" was required.
But it was a very very old brick building with a huge window ... so it could be ... you may be SOL.
Cool.

well it got in there, so it could come out. but the problem is now the two that owned the press, and their daughter, ( my mom) are now deceased. so cannot ask how they got it in. im assuming it was via the exterior basement door.  via a flight of stairs. its a given the flywheel will have to come off to clear either basement door ( interior or exterior ) exterior is 36" if memory serves maybe a tad wider. the body of it will fit. wheel no matter what will NOT fit if attached. dammit that means ill have to get an engine hoist into the basement to remove the wheel lol

Sounds like instead of disassembling the press to get it out of the house, you need to disassemble the house to get it out of the press...  That kind of thing goes down with a house!  :o

Any chance you could back a truck with a winch to the exterior door? Seems like that'd be the easiest way to do it.

Go to a gym where body builders hang out.
Offer something for them to move it.
Make it a contest? Who can carry out the fly wheel?
Video it for some reality show and give them any money you get for it?
