Title: What sprocket set up R U.....????
Post by: GSF500 on October 17, 2012, 06:33:39 AM
Just curious what sprocket combo to switch to... :dunno_black: I know the stock set up is 16/39 and I switched to 17/32 for better gas mileage.. :thumb: Now I want to do the opposite :cookoo: I just bought a 14T front sprocket and I mainly run 45 to 65 MPH on back roads and twisties. I'm wondering what rear sprockets you are running and if you like your set up or wish you would have went bigger/smaller...? I very seldom ride the interstate and if I do it's a short trip. Thanks

I'm very happy with the stock setup at 16/39, though it may just be bliss since I haven't had another GS500 sprocket setup other than stock.  :dunno_black: However, I do about 50/50 highway/city riding, so I like to think that it is the right setup for me anyway.

I did 14/41, and it picked up really quickly, lot of fun to accelerate, but my fuel economy was laughable. Now i'm running 15/41, pretty fun still, but better mileage. 14/39 would be roughly like I have now, you'll enjoy it

17/39 great gas milage and less vibrations. mostly running between 4 and 5 k and works for me.

I'm running 16/40, only because I got a 40 in a box-o-parts and the 39 was worn out - higher than 16 in the non-bossed early years sprocket is a little bit harder to come by (I think 17 can be found, but was not available locally when I was shopping, and 18 was unobtanium when I last searched.)

I have some aluminum rears like the one I'm running (but more teeth - 42 & 43, perhaps?) for sale (search for a really old garage sale post by me - 2009? - they haven't moved fast) but they are technically 525 sprockets (despite which I've had no issues, galling or binding with a brand-new 520 chain and the 40 tooth sprocket I'm running.)

16/46. RPM are approximatly 1000 higher in 6th gear at 100KPH+. 100KPH=6000RPM 120kph=7000 RPM. Havent burned through a full tank yet to see the difference although i am contemplating a 17/46. This would give me a little more acceleration over the popular 15/39

How many links do you need in your chain to run 17/46?  It would definitely be more than stock.

If you have been running 17/32 for a while, I would go to 17/39.

Don't know the the link number but yes I bought a new chain. I left enough to add the 17f if I decide to down the road

I'm running 18/37 with the standard chain and am very happy with it.

Thanks for the replies :D Not sure what I'M going to do yet.....I just want the fun/power factor for a while for something new then I will switch back to my more conservative riding style. In regards to my rear sprocket, I ordered it from sidewindersprockets.com I believe it was custom made and my friend purchased one for his GS500F that was 30T. I was /am focused on MAX mpg and get 72 to 75 mpg on the 17/32 combo. I think the owner of sidewinder can make just about anything. I give his sprockets :thumb: I will let ya know what I do and THANKS. :)
