hey guys got my self a gsxf750 rear wheel and i got a 150 pilot road tyre mounted on to it and the tyre is touching chain ?
in the how to guide on this loads of people have put 150 tyres on this wheel and even 160's in some cases so why the hell does mine not fit ?
i could get it to fit but with around 1mm clearence from the tyre but this carnt be safe ? i no for a fact the chain will chafe on the tyre when changing gear
i have the chain adjusted all the way back and my chain is still slack as well !
does anybody have any photos on how much clearence they have between the tyre and chain ?
i have spent a lot of money on referbing the wheel ,new tyre, powdercoating wheel, newbearings, disk, bolts, valve est
any help wpuld be great
cheers guys
Ok, dumb questions first.
Is your wheel straight?
Are your spacers in correctly?
I probably only have about 1/8th between my tire and chain.
You can space your sprocket out slightly if you want with washers.
Why do you think it will hit when you change gears?
Got a pic?
Also, did you swap your chain or gears?
Aren't you supposed to add some washers under the sprocket as shims to bring it out a bit?
cheers for the replys lads and i dont have any pics atm ,
everything is fitted correctly and as for the chain question the guy i bought the bike off said it had new sprocket and chain off the top of my head its says 522 on the chain
the wheel is straight and all fitted correctly
what tyre are you using mate ?
If your adjuster is all the way back and your chain is still slack, then either it's an old, worn out chain, or someone didn't cut the links from the brand new chain to make it fit perfect like they should have.
I just put a new chain on my bike, says it needs a 110 link, but I moved the wheel all the way forward and mocked everything else up. Turned out cutting 13 links off the 120 link chain I bought. Now I have full tension with the wheel fully forward :)
its slack it nearly touchs the swing arm al get a chain splitter and take some links out
and cheers for the reply mate did u use a chain splitter ?
Yeah I like to put them just forward of the middle of the adjustment.
Also, I run 160 Pirelli's, on a kat wheel.

I took an angle grinder with a grinding wheel to the rivets, then a flat head and a hammer to knock the link out. If the chain itself is worn out it will stretch very quickly though.
I have a 140 on the back, and finally bit the bullet on a chain when I started leaning right and felt the chain bouncing off the tire... Had a new one on there the next day lol
Love to do this mod, Estimated cost?
cost me bout 200£ to do thats for the :
wheel
bearings
new tyre
wheel weights
valve
powder coating
tyre levers to put tyre on
its easy to do but i am having clearence problems with a 150 tyre !
update:
i have shimmed the sprocket around 1.5mm and its not touching the chain but i have around 1mm from the chain to the edge of the tyre i am sure this is going catch when riding gonna have to take it for a spin soon , i couldnt today as the battery flat
i also used a 600 bandit tourqe brake arm and it fits with no bending requiered
be great to see some photos of the clearences people have with 150 and 160 tyres and what make of tyre they are using as i may change from this michelin pilot road
cheers guys
This all gets very confusing when a 150 becomes wider than a 160. :icon_lol: The write up in the wiki covered installation of a 160/60 Sportec M-1 on a 4.5" wide Kat wheel. Finally found the specs for that now obsolete M-1. It's 160 mm wide mounted on a 5.5" measuring rim. When a tire is mounted on a 1/2" narrower rim it becomes about 5 mm or .2" narrower. So in this case the 160 would be reduced 10 mm in width to approx 150 mm on a 4.5" rim. On the other hand the 150/70 Pilot Road is 151 mm wide mounted on a 4.25" rim according to specs to accomodate 4.0-4.5" rims so it's a couple mm or so wider than the 160 when mounted on your 4.5" rim. Looks like your chain clearance would be close to the same.
I forgot about that, what's the width of your gsxf750 wheel?
I wasn't aware you could use the 600 Bandit brake arm. I would rather do that and spend $20 than have to heat one up, bend it and then paint it again.

this is a very detailed post :icon_razz: what i like to hear when you need the help and i have already took all this in to consideration mate
like you say its going to be close to the same but that couple of millimeters changed everything its bloody close to start with i have got about 2mm space between the tyre and chain i i no for a fact this will rub
my wheel is 4.5j the standard gs500 wheel is 3.5j
all i need is a few mm and i will be happy
al take a few photos tomorrow just to show how close the tyre is to the chain
and weedahoe yes it fits perfect got a good 5mm from the tyre make sure you get the 600 bandit brake bar as no other bar will fit of the bandits for example 1200 , 400 bandit
cheers
