Title: The Purple Explorer build..
Post by: NortwestRider on October 21, 2012, 06:42:09 PM
When I bought Trey from addiasguy I planned on making it into a adventure/dirt road runner for my wife for a upcoming Alaska trip.Today I finally put it in the shed and started the build. The list of things to do and add is as follows.
DS tires..705's
Skid plate
Fairing
Hard bags..50 cal ammo cans
Hwy pegs
Throttle lock
Bar mitts
BarkBusters

I started buy installing the barkbusters,I had to trim the the levers for clearence. The install was wayyy harder then it should have been. The barkbusters were NOT designed for a bike with a front master cyclinder so they didn't fit.But after a hour or so with a cut off saw and a grinder they now fit!!

That's UW school spirit! Their color is purple!
Add some gold. Paint on a Husky dog and a "W". You just doubled the value of Trey!

That's awesome! Good work.
It's a little late now, but I've flipped that banjo around on mine for clearance when I had clip-ons on it.
My wife wants my yellow 04 to be purple as well. I'm not too sure how it would look.

I'm going to try to flip it around for some extra clearence. When I bought the bike it was blue but Pat let my wife pick out a color and we converted it over to purple before it left the bike cave !!.If you guys think we are lying about the amount of parts addiasguy has,how many people have most of the colors Suzuki put on the GS hanging around in there rafters, complete sets !!.

Saw your thread on ADV forum and located it on here. Nice backrest and rack. how did you make it? It looks professionally done.

He will have to tell you about the back rest.
The rear rack is a stock Renntec. Pretty nice. Easy to put on.
Title: The Purple Explorer build..
Post by: NortwestRider on October 24, 2012, 02:47:00 PM
The back rest I made so that my wife could ride my 4 year old grandson around,It's made so that it keeps him up against her.It just bolts on with 2 bolts. The rack is great albeit a little small but I have a alum plate that bolts on to hold a 2 gallon fuel can .

Here's the low down on the back rest.
The pad is a piece of 1/2" plywood with a piece if memerory foam glued to it then a peice of black vinyl over it.
The steel is just some scrap 1x1" square tube and the mounting plate is some 2"x1/4" thick.the plate on the rack has the holes and the back rest has the bolts welded to it.
I had my wife and grandsin sit on the bike then I measured and built it.!!

He's been in the sidecar since he turned 4,and on the bike for the last 6 months or so.Cycle Gear makes kids gear now and there full face street helmets are really kids sized ( not just a adult small with extra padding ).I took him down there to pick it out and he thought that was pretty cool. They also have leather and textile gear and real MC boots!!.

Ammo boxes for panniers. What a good idea. And cheap from a surplus store.

A bit late now for the back rest. Had you thought of making it a two piece horizontal tube so you could slide the rest forward and back to suit different passengers?
Title: The Purple Explorer build..
Post by: NortwestRider on October 28, 2012, 01:12:31 PM
Yes the ammo cans are $22 each with new seals!!.
I thought about making it more adjustable ( the back rest ) but I built it in 20 minutes and there is nobody else that will ride on the back .

The WIKI has the color chart. They have the color. Colors are 1TU or 1HU. I recall it is a 1994 tank so 1Tu.

Here is where I'm at.
The hand guards are done
The fairing is done
Volt meter is done
The aux fuel tank is done
The saddle bag rack is 90% done.

Put some Seafoam in Dora and ran her for about 10 minute and it's already running better.I will let it sit in carbs over night and loosen up any gunk and run her again.
I built this engine guard/skid plate BUT I'm not sure I like it.If I keep it I will trim it down some and drill holes it for cooling.

I like both...that or a Strom 650 might be my next ride when the GS dies of an oil death (Don't most die that way?)

Yes,I agree about the tail light.I'm leaving it alone untill we get back from Alaska.
I got the the rack done and the bags mounted.Making the bags detachable so we can carry them into the motel took some thought be I figured it out.
So next weekend I need to bolt the rack on and weld on the hwy pegs to the crash bars and DORA is road ready!!.
I will mount up the TKC80's a few weeks before we leave ( 1st of June ).

EXCELLENT work. youve got a bike where the bags serve two purposes. storage :) and the handles can work as shaZam! handles for your pillion.  ( shaZam! handles is a term we use here. for the handle in a car you grab when driver gets too aggressive lol) btw a suggestion. regarding the signals. put some type of sealant where the wires pass through the mounting nuts. water&electrics = dammit lol

very nice build !

how about a seperate thread about the honda you picked up ? i'd really like your take on it's handling, power, and fueling (fueling is so freaking important on EFI bikes!), and compare/contrast to other bikes (gs included) you've ridden and owned.

i could care less about 0-60 times and HP ratings. tell us how it RIDES. ok ? :)

are you fitting ds tires on this purple wonder before the trip  ? sorry if i missed that part :)

Yes the the GS ( and the NCX )are getting TKC80's up front and K60's rear.If your not into HP and 0-60 times you would love the NCX!!.
It's about the same HP as the GS500 ( about 48 ) BUT it's a 100% different kind of power.All it's torque is around 2,500 rpm's and it red lines at 6,500 rpm's.

Well we took DORA out for her 1st training ride ( my wife to!! Hehe ) and it ran great and with saddle bags on ( unloaded ) it got 60.4mpg !!.
I had figured our fuel milage based on the GS getting 50mpg and my bike getting 60mpg,mine got 75.5mpg and hers at 60mpg we should have plenty of gas $$$ for our trip.

We were riding today. Still would like him to stop back for a visit. All the other bikes miss him (her).

This Saturday I plan to be wrenching and cleaning up the Bike Cave. Did a Costco run today for 2 cases of assorted beers so all ready for the week end.

Remember the 15th is Backfire Moto night. Another good time for all of us to get together.

I had them on my Vstrom and I could scrape the pegs on dry pavement. On the dirt they work better than any other dualsport tire I have ever tried,as long as you air them down.
I will be running a Karoo 3 on the rear IF they become available in time,if not then we will run K60's.

Offroad=YESSSSSS
On road=Dry pavement as good as pure street tires.Wet pavement not as good.

These rear tires should last around 12,000 miles on the GS,the front I hope to get atleast 7,000 miles out of.These are not cheap tires, the rear K60 in a 140/80-17 is almost $200.
The 120/70-17 front TKC is about $120.

I plan on mounting the tires this weekend.I will have to mod both ends to fit these tires. The front will have to have the fender/fork brace raised and the rear will have to have the brake bar modified for the wider tire.

WOW,I really thought that I would have to move the front fender up and bend/cut the rear brake bar to fit these tires but I didn't !!.
They are a 120/70 front and a 140/80 rear and no mods needed.

Every bike looks way more badass with knobbies! And the lightweight GS will probably do better than some big 'adventure!' bikes once you hit the gravel roads. Although I hear in some places the gravel is so thick it's almost like riding in sand and you really need lots of horsepower to get going and keep your speed up.

Tires in Alaska are about double the $$ than here.I was going to run the stock street tires on both bikes and change them over to DS tires in Fairbanks, but thats means a extra day and I didn't want to haul tires up with us.There is a place in fairbanks that I could ship them to and pay them to swap them out but theres another day and $$$.So I did ALOT of research over several months and found that the Heidi K60 rear go's about 12,000 miles on a DL650,so on my 700 and my wifes 500 the rear should make it no problem. The front TKC's I have run go around 6,000+ miles so they should make it also.

You see alot of mitts on bikes here because of the cold rain/ snow in the winter, when you see a bike with them you know he/she is a REAL Norwestener !!.
