Title: Coils & Other Questions
Post by: Yutchadol on October 22, 2012, 06:37:38 PM
Hello I'm new to this site & motorcycle riding. I got me a 1992 GS500e last month & found out there are more problems than I though.

First off, I dropped the bike learning how to ride it. That damaged my left coil. It leaks a bit. So I'm thinking that is why my battery dies every 3 days because it's not charging? I've search for the 92' coils & couldn't find any. Now I'm wondering if I can use another year's? The ones on the bike are aftermarket.

I appreciate all the help  :thumb:

I don't think the coils on these bikes have anything in them to leak -- someone will correct me if I'm wrong about this.

Can you be more specific about the location on the bike of the part that's leaking?

Yeah, your terminology is off a bit. Only "coils" we have are the spark plug coils and they don't leak. Why don't you take a picture and post it for us. Don't worry about dropping the bike, im sure we all did with our first bike. I know i dropped mine

Was it the battery that is leaking?

If the battery IS leaking, then there won't be much frame left after the acid eats some of it away letting the rest rust

When I had my carb synced, the guy said I had a vacuum leak.

Yes, the battery would have some juice on it when I take it out to charge

Those are not oem coils but you can easily (and should) get replacements

After dropping the bike, you cpould have lost some battery acid. Check the battery levels and insure it is the correct battery. One clue is the drain is on the right side. also the positive is on the right rear. Negative on left rear.

Aftermarket coils COULD be filled with oil as a coolant.

You need to check everything and insure you get all parts back to stock.

That looks like an Automotive Coil, and yes they have oil in them (at least they use to)

EDIT: and now that it's leaking it is going to cause you nothing but grief, get some OEM's back on it  :whisper:

Thanks for the help. I am changing replacing everything one by one. I did get the battery after I dropped the bike so I don't think that's the case. The new battery being a bad battery is a maybe.

Another thing is my bike will only go 70 MPH and that's going downhill. I'm no speed rider but I would like to be able to keep up with traffic. What are some of the things I should look into? I will clean the carb this weekend.

If it were me, I would out new plugs in it, clean the carbs and synch them and please keep an eye on your oil. Check it every time before you ride.

That's definitely one of the ignition coils in the picture -- they're really just transformers, and the larger ones (ie, electrical pole size) commonly use oil for cooling.  I've just never seen one so small use a coolant other than air.  Passage of time notwithstanding, I think Stevo's right.  I think your best bet's to replace the coil with whatever matches the other coil.  If you can't find a match to the other, replace both.

My first drop was my wife's bike, 25+ years ago -- I still haven't gotten out from under that one.

Alright so I got some OEM coils (thanks Weedahoe) & I don't know how they go on. Anyone has a picture of this? The aftermarket ones on the bike have screws on them so all I have to do is unscrew the nuts & take off both positive & negative wires.

As far as the battery I think it's a bad one because I fully charged it last night, rode the bike for about 25 mins, parked it. Just now I went to turn on the bike but sounds like the battery is dead. So it being charged at the moment.

They go in the front under the tank.
2 bolts each and 2 spacers. If the coils did not come with them, many of us have piles of them.
You mount both of them with the contacts to the right.

Yeah, I've got some screw and spacers I can send. I assumed you already had some with those who coils you were using. My bad.

As for the battery, you can go to www.advanceautoparts.com and order a battery and before checkout, Google discount codes online and use them during checkout. I have found codes to save up to 30 percent sometimes.

Thanks to both. I've got another question. I took out the carb a few times to clean & mess around with. My bike is not idling in neutral unless I give it gas by pulling the throttle back a bit & keep it in position. I'm guessing it has something to do with when I put the throttle cable back on. So question is how should the throttle cable sit? With a lot of slack room?

I'm not sure how to properly do it but I do know I've had mine on and off quite a bit and have adjusted them also. Mine do not have any slack.

Sounds like the pilot air screws are closed too far, or some part of the pilot circuit is clogged -- may you dislodged something while cleaning.  Do you know how many turns out the air screws are currently?

Hi I know it's kinda late but it's about 3 turns off. I've read it suppose to be about 1 1/2 to 2. i will have to re-jet my carb soon so I'll see what works  :thumb:
