actually, a good price.
they go under the the valve springs and seal the valve stem, preventing oil from seeping into the cylinder.
if your bike isn't smoking (exhaust) on start up, and doesn't start to smoke when you sit idling for a bit, then you don't need them.
My bike smokes when its cold out starting up but I'm checking my valves at the end of november...

That might not be smoke. If it only happens when it's cold, it might be condensation.
I just figured that one of my exaust valves was tight...
The thought of it being condensation made sense too but starting is a B**** and i've had to have my bat jumped a bunch of times.
What happens when it is first started is the exhaust is throwing out smoke-white- but throwing it out and i have to hold onto the throttle a little to keep the revs up at 3k when on choke. Then about 5 minutes later the bike will rev at the right choked rpm and the smoke will be dissapated.
mine runs retarded rich when its on full choke, and puts out a grey smoke when warming up. it is condensation and unburnt fuel. 0 smoke when starting no choke.
The better tell is when the bike idles for extended periods, if you don't start getting smoke from the pipe then your seals are probably in fine shape.
but hell, you you're doing the valves, sure, replace 'em. never hurts.

how cold is the ambient when you're trying to start the bike ?
it will -steam- when it's cold, but only for a few minutes as you've described. if you want some help with the starting in cold weather (by cold i mean at or below freezing) look for my thread about interrupting the headlight with a relay. also, putting a cover on the bike and ONE 75 watt bulb hanging from a footpeg will keep the bike nice and warm for cold morning commuting. it's not neccesary, but it helps keep the battery alive longer. cold, thick oil drains the battery quickly.
i wouldn't worry with valve seals until the bike smokes like a tar kettle in july. then, i'd do rings, valve seals, or just a new engine as cheap as they are on ebay.
