This is for those who have been inside the motor and transmission, as well as looked at other bikes with similar engines - like GS450's etc.
I am trying to get rid of that clutch push rod that runs across the motor left to right.
Is there a GS's clone that has that on the right side ... cos the clutch basket is on the right, no reason that cam assembly needs to be on the left with the Idiotic push rod running across.
I like the yamaha like system on my MZ where its on the case on the right.
Cool.

I'm with you...I think that the setup is a bit odd. I'm sure that there is a reason for it though.
Well I dont care if it is odd ... or even ... I want that push rod outta there so I can slap a 4.9" dia pulley on it and go to belt drive.
And I am so sorry Jestercinti - I hit modify instead of quote when I replied ... very sorry.

No problem. I'm curious as well. A belt drive? Like on a Boulevard S40?

Yes, the savage ... I've owned one since 1996, like the month they re introduced it. I bought an 87 with 1200 miles.
I watched that thing take off in popularity ... I also may have been the first person in the worl to slap a set of 6" risers and drag bars on it. Anyway its belt is a rather wide square tooth one ... I'd use a 21mm 14mm pitch gates poly chain. Like the buell.

What's the advantages and disadvantages of chain vs. belt drive?
No grease, little to no adjustment, quiet
And never have to replace ... ever.
Though a GS will probably have too much suspension travel ... I may make it so stiff it wont travel much. You can use a idler like the buells did. Tension will cause it to let in more slack.

Can you not use a smaller pully up front? How big is the buells?
Off the shelf 14mm pitch belt pulley the smallest is 4.5" teeth dia and 4.9 flange dia.
A 8mm belt cant carry as much load. So the 14 is it.
I know of a place that makes a 14mm that is smaller ... but its not as much load capacity. The 4.5 is gates minimum recommendation for how tight you can turn that 14mm belt.
