Curious how many miles you have on your GS...? I have just over 10,000 on my 07. How far can these bikes go with a good maintenance plan?
I see GS Jack has alot.. what mileage does these bike need a valve job? I see the scheduled interval but is there a difference between recommended and actual? I'm thinking about doing it myself when I get better. Thanks
My 1993 only has 8k miles. 1.8k of which I have put on myself this year. I did a valve adjustment shortly after I bought it, and ended up changing out my intake shims to one size smaller and swapping my exhuast shims. Who knows what the previous owner had done. If you haven't done a valve adjustment at 10k, you are probably in sore need of it.
I also changed the oil when I got the bike. My bike hasn't burned much oil at all in the last 1.8k, but I know some people report somewhat quick oil consumption on these bikes. Checking you oil level often is the most important piece of maintenance you can do.
My 07 frame has a little over 9k but the 05 engine in it has right at 3k
fiancee's '92 just hit 35,500 the other day. only 1,000 of them are hers though.
10,062.4
'04 with about 5.5k... 3k are mine since purchased in May of this year with only 2.5k on it. Oil changed when I got it, and at 5k miles with no noticeable oil consumption between intervals. Have paperwork for the valves being done at the first service at a dealer, now overdue for valves (winter project, as it shows minor symptoms of tight exhaust valves).

I have a 1989, with 34,xxx miles. Starts right up, runs good and does not loose any oil between changes.
Cool, I plan on keeping the GS for along time which is something i seldom do..... :embarassed: I might buy a touring bike for the wife and I later but this GS is just an awesome bike for fun and commute.
I plan on riding mine until it gets stolen, sold, or repossessed...one of the 3.
I bought my 05 with 15,000 miles on it last winter, it has 23,000 now. I've been adjusting the valves every time I change the oil, it's just easier to remember when to do it that way. Your bike is well past due for a valve clearance inspection at 10,000 miles. I have herd that these bikes' engines don't tend to make it past 30,000 miles, but I think that's just internet chatter and people posting who don't have 1st hand experience, at least I hope so - else wise I'm SOL in another year or 2. Just check it for oil religiously.
I think GS jack is the king of mileage round these parts. But when I traded mine it had 30000 k's on it.
got mine with 19k and put 5k on it, rebuilt at 23ish, so how many of those miles really count?
i got an 06 with just under 8K, had it for just about 5 months and already put 1K miles on it
My 2007 has about 7200km (4500Mi) on it - have done about 5800kms since about March this year. Its probably going to get a valve check in the next month or so. Theres not a lot of work in keeping the chain tidy and keeping the oil clean - the main issue here is keeping tabs on corrosion forming in unseen places.
When I was looking around for my 500F I saw a 500E with about 62,000 Miles on the clock but had been religiously maintained.
I hope to keep mine until it dies of old age..
Bought my '93 with ~6400 miles on it, I've put 300 or so on it since I've recently gotten it running.
Bought my 06 3 years ago with 3500 km on it. Now has 65000 km's.
My '07 has 61,300 miles as of this morning - I've had it since new. Oil changed regularly, valves checked & shims changed when needed. She has never sat more than three weeks without being ridden - I ride her year round. I'm about to do first "serious" maintenance: clean carbs, rejet, and try to find source of lean condition before winter sets in. The cold air (20's & 30's F) really exacerbates the lean condition.
Very happy with how she runs, looking forward to turning the clock over!
05 w 14000 km. no issues yet. Knock on wood.
My 09 has 60,000kms (37,500m). I've put all of them on the bike. Valves get check every 12,000kms - 12, 24, 36, 48 and are due at its 60 thou service in the next few days.
No issues with it. No oil leaks. Nothing. Stock jetting, stock sprockets, stock everything.

My K9 only has 10,500km so far and runs perfectly. It is stock except for gearing. It seems to me that the people who have trouble with their bikes are the ones who have "fiddled" with just about everything. Mister, with 60k up on your "standard" bike you confirm to me that if it ain't broke you should not try to fix it. As a qualified mechanic for 43 years I can confirm that the $millions the manufacturers spend developing a model USUALLY works. "Standard" machinery is designed to give reliable performance over a long period. If you try to gain something somewhere you will ultimately lose out somewhere else. :technical:

Umm, I have a 2009 and have just over 10,000 miles. That's a lot of miles. Of course, I did purchase mine new in March/April 2011.
I bought my 97 GS new in 99 and put a little over 80k miles on it myself until it was totaled in July 03 and replaced by my current 02 GS. Restored the 97 and got a new title and it mostly sat for a couple years until my son JP took it for a commuter bike. It burned quite a lot of oil when used for high speed freeway commuting and he replaced the engine with a low milage used one at 88k miles and ran the bike up to about 130k miles total. He posted these pics when the odo turned over:

I bought the 02 GS with about 4k miles on it and it turned 97k miles last week and I expect it to go over 100k miles as is. It burns some oil and also leaks a little oil but it has been mostly trouble free all these years and miles. It's become a contest now to see which of us lives the longest, me or the GS. :icon_lol:
I never touched the carbs on either bike so they went the 170k+ miles I used them stock. Have said many times don't mess with your carbs and they won't mess with you. I averaged around 60 mpg overall on both bikes.
One of the exhaust valves on the 97 GS ran at a minimum clearance for many miles and was down to a minimum 215 shim by 80k miles. When this started to repeat on the 02 GS I increased exhaust valve clearances and it then ran for tens of thousands of miles after that without further shim changes.

WOW....!!! It's nice to see these bikes can go that far....I take care of everything I own and I hope to turn the odometer over :thumb: Time will tell. Thanks for the posts..

My GS went its first 20,000 miles w/o a valve check. Poor bike was running like shaZam!, but it took me awhile to get the nerve and mechanical aptitude to do the valve check myself. Obviously, the bike runs a lot better now. I will be crossing 27,000 miles in the next week. I've only put on 14,000 of those miles myself.
my 2009, had it since new...29,850miles......
Cookie
. At 67000+km
30,399 but a top end rebuild at 25000  I thought valve checks were included in the maintainance package guess I was :cookoo: to think that would be routine maintainance. Time for a valve check and I've got to get a pair of calipers.
Now Flick is a dream!

42k on my 97. Ive put about 9-10k on in the 3 yrs ive owned her.
Minimal maintenance, mostly just fuel and oil.
God knows when the valves were last checked.
Lives outside in the rain, still starts first time after a week or two of sitting.
Im hoping to get her to 50k, thne i'll decide what to do..
I bought the tools to do the valve job myself :thumb: It will be a couple months before i can get it done
