I know there are threads on this and I'm not here to ask how to do it. I'm here to ask what you think about what I want to use and how I want to do it.
I've got a spare set of OEM headers that I welded O2 bungs in the pipes to dial in the AFR using a wideband and my Innovate LC - 1.
But what I want to do is cut out the crossover and TIG weld custom shaped pieces to close up where the crossover was welded in place. That's small work.
But if anyone seen my previous thread, I took carbon fiber material I had and wrapped my OEM muffler shield. That certainly made it look better.
I recently bought a Yoshimura TRS slip on in the basic stainless steel sleeve. I looked at replacement black carbon fiber sleeves and they run around $100. But after watching how to replace the packing materials inside the muffler, I see I can just take it apart and again, wrap it in the same carbon fiber materials as I did with my OEM. So no need to spend $100 on a new sleeve.
So to take it a step further, why not add another Yoshimura TRS on the drivers side and make it dual, each with their own pipe and each taken apart and wrapped in carbon fiber?
I can adjust the frame i can the rear to make an exact mount as is on the passenger side so it will look the same. Tell me what you think?
How bout y pipe it where the can joins the stock pipe and run 2 cans in one side?
I think the issue with that would be the mounting process to the frame and the size of the cans. But it is another angle to look at
I think the issue with dual pipes is tuning. I have seen ... 0? stock systems that don't have a link pipe/ crossover pipe
you have to tune the length and cross section perfectly for you to have a pipe that performs properly on the bike, and the crossover eliminates, or at least makes easier exhaust flow tuning. shaZam!, even my old vw had a link pipe before the can.
Unless you can do this, you may end up with a bike that runs like dogshit in the rpm range you want it to run well in.
just ask all those harley owners with straight pipes.
and watch this:

I know you aren't making drag pipes, but the concept is still there.
Right but in the wiki, pretty much all of the after market exhaust systems, none of them have a crossover
My only question is what are you hoping to achieve other than maybe a different look? As Funderb has pointed out, tuning it will be a right royal PITA.
That's all. A different look and maybe a better sound
You're right. They are 2-into-1 systems, and probably tuned. I thought you want to make a 2-into-2 system? Im confused?
btdubs, i think this is an awesome idea, i just am thinking you'll end up needing a crossover to avoid death tuning from hell. are you thinking cx500 style low pipes? or the upswept ninja 500 cans?
No, you're understanding correctly. Total separate exhaust per side. Each side pipe has its own muffler. I could leave the crossover in place. I'm not against it.
I'm not a volumetric flow expert, I didn't make it past thermo I, but, you could hide the crossover under the bike, it would add the aesthetic you might be looking for, in a clean system.

That's what I would do just to avoid the issues of tuning the pipe lengths. Also adds some stability to the setup.
You want to leave the crossover in place. The placement is tuned to the engine and actually should help it breathe better. Google x-pipe or h-pipe... these are commonly used by OEMs to help balance flow out of the engine.
The advantage to no crossover is the sound is more aggressive from the exhaust. It may also be easier to fab.
When you're done, you'll have added mass and it will look like the stock system on a '81 CB900F. No idea if it will run any better or worse.
My old GS450 had a dual exhaust (one for each cylinder). It can be done, but I have no idea how or what the ramifications are.

Suzuki designed the exhaust a certain way for a reason. Modifying it will cause issues...Almost certain.
You could always try it and see what happens... :thumb:

But something like the gs450 exhaust, i could see that looking pretty good on our bikes. This winter, I'll do the something similar, weed, if I have a job. Let's build something awesome.
My buddies xs650 has 1 pipe per cylinder. Thumps hard with the tiny mufflers he has on it. Too loud for my taste, but sounds good.
Subbed to the thread, so I can see what you come up with weeda! Always stoked to follow yer projects, clean and quality work.
Funderb, good to know. Was not aware that they were linked. I remember I had the exhaust off once, but I've been hammered since then... :D
I see many projects a-brewin' on this. Should be interesting nonetheless.

I also enjoy a state of perpetual inebriation. It takes the edge off of life.
Wait, there is a "drivers side" on a bike? Wouldn't that be the front portion being that the passenger sits behind the driver? :icon_twisted:
Sorry could not resist. I agree that a crossover tube would make it easier. Or you can go the old school route of finding the right header length by painting the pipes with cheap spray paint, running it for awhile and then cutting off the pipes and installing the mufflers at the point where the paint burned back to.
Lol..... You got me. I'm too used to the truck forums.
My 04 Dodge Ram with its crammed hemi has full ceramic long tube headers, no cats or resonator, dual DMH electric cut outs, dual race Magnaflow mufflers and 4" tips. It rumbles and it gets loud when I open the valves. Absolutely nothing negative from the way the exhaust is ran
Just want the bike to breathe the same way

Absolutely nothing negative for you Weeds, but the poor shmuck in the Miata with the top down next to where your pipes exit does not feel the same way ;) Heh heh
Screw them and those Prius drivers. :flipoff:

This is about 4 years old. I now have different tips on the cans. Everything stock with crossover. Cut after crossover with ATV mufflers. Rejetted and she purrs and runs perfectly. The sound kid of sucks in the garage but you get the idea.

Read through the first page..
and was just about to post up and say that I thought I remembered seamax having duals.
Do it! I want to see how it turns out

Here is the thread on my setup

The best underbelly setup I've seen so far on a GS500 is Fry's build..
