Title: Went down for the first time.
Post by: JollyRojer on November 07, 2012, 09:31:18 AM
So as the tittle said i went down for the first time last thursday, i had no desire to be on the bike at all but with my road blocked with fallen trees from sandy i had to use the bike just to get by and get to work, ride in was fine ride home not so much... I came out of a corner and relaxed the throttle and hit either a wet patch of leaves or pine needles without even a wobble i was sliding on the ground @ 35. bike took a good solid thrashing but i had my gear on so i was able to get up and walk away, heres some of the carnage pics, going to be a long winter fix...

strangest thing is now the bike is just pissing fuel out the petcock not sure why since the tank sustained no damage (my body protected it lol) but im assuming somthings been either jared loose or disconnected, im going to pull the tank this weekend and try and figure it out, all in all im glad i didnt get really hurt and it hasnt sent me away from this sport in any way, soon as i heal im going to be right back to wrenching on it.

Glad you walked away  :thumb:

The damage does not seem to be that bad for a 35MPH spill.  Something in the petcock probably got damaged and that's why it's leaking.

Mostly cosmetic from what I see.  The handlebars can be straightened, the brake lever replaced, and the rotor cover fixed easily.  Ebay or parts people on the board can help.

Glad you're alright! The bike can be fixed a lot easier than you can!

Damn man, I just did the same thing yesterday, only a few mph slower. Tore up the timing cover, bent the timing rotor, bent the handlebars, and scuffed the muffler.

Glad you're alright. The bike is a lot easier to fix than its rider.

May all the falls we have be like this!

You are ok, the bike repair is reasonably cheap and you might learn something from this!!

Both levers bent, that's an odd one.

What have you learned from the crash?

Great that you are Ok. Fantastic that tank did not get a dent. Maybe a set of crash knobs on the parts list?

I think he runs his bars upside down to simulate clubmans.

ahhh no i run stock bars, the bike went down on the left side dragged me about 25 feet, then hit the curb and flipped up and over onto the right side luckily i hit the curb and stayed put, and thanks for the good words guys im so glad i had all my gear on, my scorpion ex400 took a serious beating, its going to need a new shield and a new paint, it looks like i did most of the slide on my head but the lid preformed beautifully, i tore the helmet off with no head injuries at all not even a headache. im still pretty sore from the entire thing especially going down on a shoulder ive already had 2 surgeries on but other then some bumps and bruises and a few cuts where the peg caught under my knee i got off completely scott free, i also after looking at it more realize the fuels leaking from the overflow (probably from the flip the bike itself did) but im stilll planning on pulling the tank for paint and to fix a hose issues (bike hates running on regular fuel seems starved and sputters and dies, flip it to reserve and it runs like a champ.)

and what ive learned, listen to my friends an family everyone told me call out of work there's no reason to risk it with all the downed trees and foliage but i take my job very very seriously looking back it now it would of been silly for me to get seriously hurt of killed for a shift but i couldn't let my co workers down we've worked way to hard to get this business off the ground and into what it is today. if i could go back in time would i make the same decision? probably but ive most certainly learned to pay alittle more heed to my family and riders a bit more experienced then me.

First, glad you're OK.

If the bike sputters and dies with the petcock set to on but runs fine set on reserve then the regular gas is not the problem.

Take care of that shoulder, mine is messed up for good with no chance of any repair. May eventually need total joint replacement and that still will not help the rotator cuff damage.

damn, glad you're okay.

Take those levers and hang them up as "offerings to the gods of speed." I've got my own little wall going myself.  While you're at it, you can switch to superbike bars for about 25 bucks. Check out the wiki, they seem better looking overall, and I find them more comfy than the stockers.

That's is pretty crazy about your bars.  It looks kind of like all your switches on the handlebars are still facing relatively toward you, which is why I thought you might run them upside down.  I would've expected one side to be bent upwards or at least a different direction than the other.  That is odd.

Also, I'd replace the helmet.  They are pretty much 1 use items when it comes to crashing.  Supposedly, even if there is no external denting or anything, the internal foam loses it's integrity after a hard hit.  I've seen people replace a helmet if it falls off a handlebar or something like that.  That is a little extreme to me, but after a crash with significant visible exterior damage I'd seriously consider replacing it.

I second the helmet replacement!!

Whenever you crash the helmet does its job and adsorbs the impact forces, preventing them from reaching your head.  However, it can only do this effectively once.  As mentioned, the inner foam becomes condensed and is no longer protective.

So, do yourself a big favor and cut the chin straps off the helmet (so it can't be reused by anyone) and then either throw it away or put it up on a shelf somewhere (maybe with your levers :-) as a reminder.

If you liked the Scorpion (its what I use too) check out motorcyclegear.com, they have some great prices.

Unless you have a shoei, apparently.

I THOUGHT I needed a new helmet. Spent $$$$ on a new one. Which I like quite a bit.But then I decided to take advantage of their "send it in, we'll analyse it for free" service.

They sent it back and told me "you're good, brah"

(well, okay, they didnt *literally* say that ;)  )

just remember, if you can't afford a helmet, a dinged one is better than no helmet at all. By all means wear it until you can afford another.

Sometimes people take the "drop it once, never wear it again" too far.

So, he fixes his bikes, rides it and has another off before he buys another helmet. The previously crashed helmet not, offering no protection, instantly fails on contact with the curb, cracking his skull.

Tell me again how people take this "drop it once never wear it again" too far?

He didn't drop it, he Crashed in it. Big difference.

Hey, you want to wear a previously crashed helmet, go at it, but do not advise other people to do so, you could be jeopardising their life.

so what if a bike is his only form of transportation? then what?
I never said "go ahead and wear your helmet" I was saying, if you NEED to ride, its better to wear a damaged helmet than no helmet.
There is no way wearing a damaged helmet in that scenario is worse for you than none at all.
Thats all i was saying.

I'd agree that wearing a damaged helmet is better than no helmet.  If money is an issue; even a cheapo helmet that is DOT certified is still good protection.  It won't be real stylish or anything, but will still offer better protection than a crashed one.

Saying "if you need to ride wear a damaged helmet" is a different way fop saying "go ahead and ride with a damaged helmet".

Better to park up and take the bus than ride with a damaged helmet. If a person is so hard up they cannot afford a hundred bux for a helmet maybe they should not own a vehicle at all and save themselves more money.

Out here in arizona apparently your a kitty cat if you wear a helmet. Everyone gives me crap for wearing mine, but i honestly wear it less for the safety and more for the comfort of the wind and debris not powning my face. I swear every signle harley - chopper- bobber-w/e rider does not wear a helmet out here. Most the street bike guys do but at the same time you see a lot without.

By everyone i mean people I work and go to school with my close friends and family and girlfriend all insist I wear one.

NH law is live free or die- only thing mandatory is eye protection from glasses to goggles!!

Myself- I wear gear all the time. Suit up or shut up when your complaining about the weather!

This says it all about mandatory helmet laws, if you choose not to wear one, fair enough, but it says a lot about how much you value your head, you don't get to choose when an incident happens:

glad you're all right! im a bit suprised at the handle bars there, but i would recommend a new helmet for sure, get a cheapo $50 one if you have to till you get a nicer one but don't re-use the crashed one. and as far as the drop it once thing, i know someone who works in a shop where they make those helmets, just dropping it off a counter on a wood floor can take 30-45% of it's effectiveness away the first time, and stickers melt them, seriously. but it takes soo long for the adhesive to make a safety difference you will probably have a new helmet by then anyways.

Give it a few weeks then see whats still sore, these things have a tendency to not be too noticeable at first. Glad to hear it was a walk-away and not a cart-away :thumb: As far as your bike, It's still in better shape than the one I primarily ride. Change the oil, kick the bars in to place get some duct tape (I prefer Gorilla brand), replace the petcock, and get back out there in the spring.
