Just curious what sprocket set up you like? Do you like quick off the line or top end better? I am running 17Front and 32 rear but I am going to switch it up this spring. who is running a 14 front and 39 rear and what kind of top end should I expect with this set up?
Considering stock is 16/39, I have no idea how you can get moving with that combination (17/32). Starting off up a hill must be murder on the clutch. Slow traffic must be impossible to do.
Curious as to who came up with that setup and why?
I am stock except one bike is 15/39. That's a little better for city riding as I can stay in 2nd or 3rd more and not have to downshift a much in slow traffic.
i did 14/41, and it got up and went, but my gas mileage was horrible, and I went through my gears very quickly. Running 15/41 now, mileage is better and gearbox is more usable. Highly recommended, and I can hit 100 mph.
Bone stock 16/39. Don't fvck with it I say.
Once when I was in Chattanooga, TN area I could not keep up with the VTX 1800 I was with through the mountains. WOT at 65.
That is the only time I had issues keeping up with other bikers.
I have been running 17/32 for over 9000 miles and I only ran the stock set up 16/39 for a short period.....it's been so long ago I don't remember how the bike rode. I came up with this set up to get max mpg and I get around 75mpg with the combo, I currently have with no clutch issues to get it to go. I even ride 2 up with no problems, don't shift as much, stay in gear longer plus I have more top end, the bike actually runs smoother. This combo is great for cruising. I want to change my riding style and give it more pep on the back roads so I thought I would change it to 14/39 combo and see how I like it and get ideas to what others like and don't like. I may be :cookoo: thanks for the replies.
wot at 65 >:( maybe I will leave it alone..!! Thanks :2guns:

?????
Were you riding into the strongest head wind ever? I'm pretty sure I've hit 100 with stock gearing in the past, not that I do it often.
Let me clarify...the WOT at 65MPH was on I-24 between Nashville and Chattanooga TN. Going up a long incline mountain, I fell behind. Downshifting didn't do much. Between curves, etc. it was WOT.
Normal flat surfaces, I have hit 85-90 indicated. Typically going up steep hills is where the power falls off at highway speeds.

Tell me you at least caught the VTX in the curves. That is a monster of a bike. I really like the old C model of the VTX1800.
I used my GS500F for lightweight Touring (solo), 17/39 did what I wanted :thumb:

16/46. Changed the rear to save my front sprocket and chain. Redlines at 190kph. Gets there quick though. 1000kph is 6000RPM, Left enough room to add 17 in front if i want...
^did you GPS that? 190 kph is 118 mph...and stock won't get you there...how does 16/46 get you there?
17/39 here as I plan to be doing some long distance riding soon :D
Thanks for the info..!!

NO GPS, Maybe Canadian bikes are just faster ;)
118 indicated would be like 107?
I just thought that typically when you go down in front or up in back, top speed drops, and stock top speed for me (indicated) was like 110 mph
17/32 > 14/39
That's a significant change ~ like keeping the stock front sprocket and going up 16teeth in the rear LOL ~ you'll definitely feel the difference
16/46 will have some significant speedo error.
but the speedo is driven by the front wheel, how do sprocket sizes affect that? I though the only thing to affect that is the height of your front tire
wait, whaaaaat? sprockets have no impact on speedo/odo, as that's all driven off the front wheel, and sprockets all go to the rear wheel.
unless you've come up with the world's first AWD GS500, in which case
I blame it on too many years with bikes that drive the speedo off the countershaft LOL
